The International Tree Planting Day falls on March 12 every year. But do you know that the tradition of planting trees started a long time ago in China It rained a lot around the Qingming Festival. People planted trees around this time because trees could grow better with enough rain.
Ancient Chinese planted many kinds of trees like mulberry trees (桑树) and fruit trees. Farmers needed mulberry leaves to feed silkworms. They made clothes with silk, sold them to the west of the world and brought back what they needed. Another famous tree-planting lover, Zhuge Liang, planted 800 mulberry trees and left them to his children after his death to support their lives.
Deng Feng, a famous doctor in the Three Kingdom Period (三国时期), saved many people’s lives. He didn’t ask them for money. What he only asked for was to plant apricot trees (杏树) on a hill. As time went by, a forest of apricot trees grew on the hill. That’s why we now show our thanks to a good doctor with the words “the warmth in an apricot forest.”

①You may know Nelson Mandela, who worked all his life to help black people in South Africa. But do you know about the Mandela Effect (曼德拉效应)
②It is a situation where many people wrongly remember something. This name started in 2020 when people remembered that Nelson Mandela died in the 1980s. But Mandela got out of prison in 1990 and died in 2013. Then an American called it the Mandela Effect.
③There are many examples. In 2022 in China, on the Internet, lots of people talked about the sentence by Mencius (孟子): “Thus when Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man.” (“故天将降大任于斯/是人也。”) Most people remembered it was “si (斯)”. Later, People’s Education Press (人教社) ended the talk by saying that all its textbooks say “shi”.
④Experts have looked into the reasons for this effect. Our minds may try to fill in missing gaps (信息空缺) in the memory. It is like inventing a story. However, this is not lying, but remembering things that never happened.
⑤The Internet may be another reason for it, as the news we read might not be true from the beginning. A study showed that false news can go around faster and reach more people than the truth. So, the Internet might be a more important reason for this effect.
28. According to the passage, the Mandela Effect is a situation where ________.
A. many people try to find out the truth B. people can just easily forget something
C. different people have different memories D. many people remember something wrong

C. Both “si” and “shi” are correct in our textbooks.
D. “si” was right in the past while “shi” is correct today.
30. Experts think that the Mandela Effect may happen when ________.
A. it is difficult for people to remember something
B. people try to tell a lie about something important
C. people try to make up a story about what happened
D. people get wrong information online about something
31. What is the best structure of this passage
A. B. C. D.
D
Imagine you’ re in a sci-fi world, and you video-call your friend. You might see them in a 3D way or in holograms (全息影像). To take a 3D photo of a person, most hologram technologies need special cameras. They record how the person looks from different angles (角度) under different lights. It makes the hologram quite real. However, holograms can’t be widely used because they are difficult to make.
To make it easier, the researchers from a Japanese university made a new computer program. It can turn normal pictures into 3D holograms. This is how it works. First, it receives information from a normal photo and then predicts the depth (预测深度) of the things in the photo. In a 3D photo, the background should be deeper than the person. After that, the program creates a 3D hologram. But it may look strange at first. The program will then check the hologram to work out the problems and make it look more real.
The program can be used to create holograms in VR headsets. For example, a user sends a picture, and the other user can see the “real” look of it in 3D. If it’s used in cars, drivers can see road signs, cars and people around them. This makes it easier for the drivers to see and there will be fewer accidents.
In the future, when holograms become more common, they can also help doctors. They can learn quickly by watching 3D images of the human body to better understand a patient’s diseases.
32. Most technologies need ________ to make holograms.
A. 3D photos B. VR headsets C. special cameras D. expensive computers
33. How does the new computer program work
a. It checks the hologram. b. It receives a normal photo. c. It creates a hologram. d. It predicts the depth.
A. b-c-d-a B. d-b-a-c C. b-d-c-a D. d-c-b-a
34. How does the writer develop Paragraph 3
A. By telling a story. B. By giving an example. C. By asking questions. D. By listing facts.
35. What can we infer from the passage
A. The new computer program costs much more money.
B. Holograms make it safer for drivers to drive on roads.
C. The new program makes it easier to make holograms.
D. Doctors are now using holograms to help their patients.

Community canteens (社区食堂) are places for old people to have meals, as the elderly may have trouble in cooking. However, these canteens have become more and more popular among young people recently. Why do so many young people choose to have meals in these “elderly” community canteens
Many young people are too busy with work to cook for themselves. “I used to spend two hours cooking and washing dishes, only to eat for 10 minutes,” said Chen Luo, an engineer from a nearby office building. The nearby community canteen is a perfect choice.
Compared with food ordered online, foods in these canteens are much healthier. Fang Wenjing, a teenage boy from Hangzhou, can order a meat dish, 2 vegetable dishes and a bowl of rice for only 20 yuan in the nearby community canteen. “Though the dishes are cheap, they are healthy and have a home-cooked taste, just as I expected,” said Fang.
However, some people show different opinions about these community canteens. They doubt whether the canteens can make sure the dishes are fresh and healthy with such low prices. Besides, meals there are all home-made dishes with fewer specials in different places. “Though other restaurants are a little more expensive than the community canteens, I prefer to enjoy the beautiful environment and nice service there,” said Linda Wang, a young English teacher.
Anyway, community canteens really meet the daily needs of people who live in big cities. What do you think

Friendship That Matters
I have a good friend named Tom. We often shared many happy moments together.
One day, we had an argument because we both wanted to be the team leader in a group project. Each of us thought we were more suitable for this position. After that, we didn’t talk to each other for a whole day. But later, we realized that our friendship was more important than being a team leader. So we apologized to each other and worked together as a team. In the end, our project was very successful.
This experience made me understand that friendship is precious. True friends will not let small things break their relationship, and they can always support each other.
