Over 700 years ago, Marco Polo travelled to China along the old Silk Road. Today, another Italian has done all the same. And she’s 74 years old! Meet this cool grandmother, Vienna Cammarota. She started out from Venice (威尼斯), the birthplace of Polo, in April 2022. She walked a long, long way—over 20,000 kilometers. She did this with just a backpack and two walking sticks. She also took with her a copy of Marco Polo’s diaries to read. Finally, in August 2024, she arrived in China.
This all started over 20 years ago. A student from China stayed at her home for a short period. After learning about China, Cammarota wanted to visit for herself.
A long the way, she saw a lot. The old Silk Road is now part of the Belt and Road. There are new bridges, roads, and railways. They join countries together, just like the old Silk Road did.

Earth is getting more crowded as the world population is still growing. Especially in some countries, their population growth is faster than others. These include Egypt, India, Nigeria and so on. However, the growth may not last always. The low birth rate (出生率) and more older people will be the main causes.
According to the World Population Prospects 2022, the world population should reach 8 billion on November 15 this year. It could grow to 9.7 billion in 2050, before reaching the highest point of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080. The population is expected (预期) to stay at that level until 2100. And in 2023, India should overtake China and have the largest population in the world.
While the world population is still growing, its growth rate is at its slowest since 1950 because of fewer babies. Today, two-thirds of the world population live in a country or area where lifetime fertility (生育率) is below 2.1 births for each woman. A population with this kind of birth rate and low death rate would not grow or reduce over time. It would stay about the same.
A low birth rate means fewer young people to care for the growing aging population worldwide. The share of the world population aged 65 or above is expected to rise to 16 percent in 2050. Around the world, life expectancy (预期寿命) could go up to 77.2 years in 2050 from 72.8 years in 2019. However, where you’re born can decide your life expectancy. Life expectancy for the least developed countries is 7 years less than the world average (平均).

Members of China’s 40th Antarctic scientific team set off on November 1, 2023. The team is expected to arrive around December. They plan to finish the task in four months and return in April, 2024. This is the first time the country’s Antarctic research task will be carried out by three ships. While two icebreakers with more than 460 researchers started from Shanghai, the other ship with materials for the new research station left from Zhangjiang.

In China, red is a very special and meaningful color. We often use Chinese red in festivals and celebrations. At weddings, the couple will wear red dresses to show love and a happy marriage.
