The oil-paper umbrella has a history of over 1, 000 years in China. It used to be a water-proof (防水的) tool for daily use.
There are different stories about the origin of the umbrella in China. The most popular one is related to Lu Ban. It is said that once he and his younger sister visited the West Lake. It started raining suddenly. The sister said, “Let’s have a competition. Before sunrise tomorrow, who comes up with a way to make it possible for people to visit the West Lake even on rainy days will be the winner.” Lu Ban thought it was easy. He collected some tools and materials and spent the whole night building ten pavilions (凉亭) around the lake. He was quite confident about his efforts.
The next morning, however, when Lu Ban was talking proudly about his achievements, his sister held something unusual in her hand. It could be opened into a round shape. Lu Ban was surprised. He found that the object made of silk and bamboo strips (竹条) could be opened and closed easily. It was light, beautiful and easy to carry. Lu Ban said, “You win. Your ‘pavilion’ can protect us from rain.” So the umbrella was invented.
Later, when paper was invented, people used much cheaper paper to replace silk, cutting the cost of umbrellas. To make the umbrella water-proof, people brushed tung oil (桐油) across the surface. That was how the oil-paper umbrella was invented.

Umbrellas could be one of the world’s most important inventions. The first umbrella was invented over four thousand years ago.
Umbrellas were used on sunny days at first. Chinese people were the first to use their umbrellas on rainy days. They waxed (给……打蜡) their paper umbrellas so that they could be used when it was raining.
The word “umbrella” comes from the Latin word, umbra. It means shade (背阴). Starting in the 16th century, the umbrella became popular in the Western world, especially in northern Europe, where it often rains. At first, people thought that the umbrella was only suitable for women.
Then a famous English traveler, Jonas Hanway (1712-1786), carried and used an umbrella in England for thirty years. Because of him, men began to use umbrellas.
In Europe, early umbrellas were made of wood and covered with canvas (帆布).
People used very hard wood to make umbrella handles. In 1852, Samuel Fox invented a new kind of umbrella with ribs (伞骨) made of steel.
Samuel also started a company called English Steels Company. After that, compact collapsible (可叠) umbrellas were the next important step in umbrella production.

Long time ago, people from other cultures used their hands to eat food, while the ancient Chinese invented chopsticks to keep their hands clean. Early chopsticks were used mainly for cooking until 400 A.D.when people began eating with chopsticks.
We don’t know exactly when chopsticks were invented. There’s a research showing that they didn’t come into wide use until about 300 B.C. Chinese thinker Confucius was an important person in the history of chopsticks, because he thought peace would not appear if people used knives during a meal.
The “no-knives-on-the-table” rule led to a big change in Chinese cooking. Food had to be cut into small pieces. This was the birth of Chinese cooking and it has made Chinese food popular around the world.
However, many Westerners find it difficult to use chopsticks. Eric, a foreign teacher, had the experience of learning to use chopsticks. “I need to hold them properly to be able to put the food carefully into my mouth.” Eric’s Chinese friends taught him patiently, but it still took him months to learn this skill. “But it’s worth learning. I have learned a lot from this experience,” Eric said.
Cultures can often be understood through food. For Chinese, food doesn’t just provide energy. It also brings happiness. And chopsticks also mean a lot. As a good example of Chinese culture, they show the Chinese wisdom (智慧).
11.Why did the ancient Chinese invent chopsticks
12.Who thought peace would not appear if people used knives during a meal
13.What led to a big change in Chinese cooking
14.How do many Westerners feel about using chopsticks
15.For Chinese, which do chopsticks show, energy or wisdom

Study is an important experience for everyone. After twenty years, I can still remember my first day at school. I was only 6 years old at that time. It was a very big room. I sat at the desk near the window, but I couldn’t see anything because the window was too high. There was a big map of the world on the wall and an old blackboard. I don’t think I was worried or afraid because I wanted to be a teacher at that time. There was another little boy next to me. He sat there and kept silent at first. Then he began to cry, because he didn’t want to stay there.
More and more students came in, but the boy didn’t stop crying. “Mom, I want to go home,” he cried again and again. Later, the teacher came in. She went to the little boy, and said something to him. I couldn’t hear what she said. Soon the boy stopped crying and began to smile. I thought the teacher was a superwoman and I admired her very much. I wanted to be a teacher like her.

The Double Ninth Festival, also named the Chongyang Festival, falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. On this day, people would like to drink chrysanthemum (菊花) wine. The Chinese word for wine is Jiu, a similar pronunciation of the Chinese word for “long”, which means “forever”. Another special food for this festival is chrysanthemum cakes. The Chinese word for cake is Gao, a similar pronunciation of the Chinese word “high”, showing great progress at work and in daily life.
It is hard to say when these customs began. But there are many stories about the festival. As was recorded in a historical book of the sixth century, there lived a man named Huan Jing. He was learning the magic arts from Fei Changfang. One day, the two people were climbing a mountain. Fei Changfang suddenly stopped and looked very upset. He told Huan Jing, “On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, a disaster will come to your hometown. You must go home at once. Remember to make a red bag for each of your family members. Then you must all tie your bags to your arms, leave home quickly and climb to the top of a mountain. Most importantly, you must all drink some chrysanthemum wine. Only by doing so can your family members be safe.”
On hearing this, Huan Jing rushed home and asked his family to do as his teacher said. The whole family climbed a nearby mountain and did not return until the evening. When they got back home, they found all their animals dead, including chickens, sheep, dogs and even the ox.

Bitwalking (比特步行) is an invention by a small company in London. To make people walk more, this new app on the mobile phone is paying people, based on their daily walking steps.
With this app (应用程序), walkers can earn (赚得) one “Bitwalking dollar” for about 10,000 steps (about eight kilometres). Three Bitwalking dollars can be earned by one person per day at most. The money people earned can be spent on online shopping sites or exchanged for cash (现金) .
One idea behind the app is to make people healthier. But the designers also have another goal: to improve people’s lives. In poor countries, people have to walk far to work, or to school, or simply to collect water. Workers in the countryside earn less than one dollar a day. By walking around with the Bitwalking app, they could earn three times more.

Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events-love, sadness, good times, and bad times. It tells real-life, stories and sounds the way people really talk. As life becomes more difficult to understand, it is good to hear music about ordinary people.
Country music, sometimes called country-western, comes from the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern Unite States. Country music is also from traditional cowboy music from the west. The singers usually play guitars, and in the 1920s they started using electric guitars. At first city people said country music was low class. It was popular mostly in the South. But during World War II, thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them. Soldiers from the rest of the country went to army camps in the South. They learned country music. Slowly it became popular all over the country.
Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada—in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. About 1, 200 radio stations broadcast country music twenty-four hours a day. English stars sing it in British English, and people in other countries sing it in their own languages. The music that started with cowboys and poor Southerners is now popular all over the world.

What’s your favorite sleeping position On your back On your side How about standing up Unless you happen to be a giraffe. I’d never have thought anyone would choose the last one. But now, thanks to a Japanese company, it could be a real competitor.
Giraffe-nap is invented to allow the user to take a rest while standing when he/she feels tired or sleepy. Its purpose is to help the user improve performance at work. In an introduction to the nap box, the company says that it will allow the user to be refreshed (恢复精神的) in just 20 minutes.
But why does it have to be standing The company explains that studies have shown that sleeping while standing allows people to reach a sleep state and they can breathe easily. When they wake up, they can feel the effect of a nap without having to sleep too much. And they can quickly return to work without feeling dizzy (眩晕的). Also, making the box stand upright means that it takes up half as much floor space.
Now, I know what you’re thinking—wouldn’t a person fall down if he tried to sleep while standing Of course not. Inside the box are four points to support the body—head, buttocks (臀部), legs and feet. That means he can rest his arms, legs and head in the box while still remaining upright.
