Canadian violinist Adrian Anantawan just wants to make music. But when he performs, the audience isn’t just hearing the beautiful sounds from his violin, they are hearing the sounds of inclusion and inspiration. That’s because Anantawan was born without the right hand and most of his right forearm, which could have prevented him from becoming a musician, but this has not stopped him from following his dreams.
“A lot of times, we let fear get in the way of trying anything,” Anantawan said. “For me, my story has always been a result of just trying something, being okay with failure, and then just seeing what the results are. In my case, it’s really just beautiful, expressive music.”
However, the road to becoming a musician wasn’t smooth for him. He went from being refused by music teachers who couldn’t think out of the box to studying with giants, like Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman. But it didn’t happen overnight. Finding the right instrument to play was also difficult. In elementary school, his music teacher wanted him to play the recorder but he didn’t have enough fingers to play. Then the trumpet was recommended but Anantawan wasn’t moved by the sound. He really wanted to play the violin.
After many rejections, he finally found a teacher, Peggy Hills, and learned to play with his left hand. But holding the bow was still a barrier until a special adaptation was made for him at a hospital in Toronto. “From the very first note I played, I was really attracted to the sound and the connection of my body to the instrument and being able to express my imagination,” Anantawan said.
Now, Anantawan is an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music. His goal is to ensure that people who have challenges feel like they have choices in finding ways to express themselves, as he did through music. “My duty and job is to use this platform in some way to show folks what a person with a visible disability can do. And you never know who’s watching in the audience or who will be moved to make a change in their lives,” he said.
4. What can be known about Adrian Anantawan from paragraph 1
A. He is a natural performer. B. He has been disabled since birth.
C. He got inspiration from the audience. D. He once found it hard to face barriers.
5 Why are Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman mentioned
A. They helped Anantawan a lot.
B. They were willing to accept new ideas.
C. They refused to take Anantawan as a student.
D. They recommended Anantawan to learn the trumpet.
6. What did Peggy Hills do for Anantawan
A. He accompanied Anantawan in the hospital.
B. He adapted the violin bow specially for Anantawan.
C. He trained Anantawan how to become more imaginative.
D. He guided Anantawan how to play the violin with only one hand.
7. What message does the text deliver
A. Music is a world language.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
D. Life is too short to waste time regretting.

In 2013, Ning Zeng, a climate scientist at the University of Maryland, came across a very old, very important log. At that time, he and his colleagues were digging a channel in the Canadian province of Quebec. They planned to fill it with 35 metric tons of wood. Then, they would cover the wood with clay soil and let it sit for nine years. Their goal was to find out whether the wood would break down. If it worked, this exercise would prove that burying plant matter could be a cheap way to store carbon. Keeping such carbon from entering the atmosphere could help fight climate change.
The uncovered log was once part of an Eastern red cedar. Some 3, 775 years ago, this tree drew carbon dioxide, or CO2, from the air and then used its carbon molecules (分子) to create wood. When it died, the tree got buried beneath as little as two meters of clay soil. It now turns out that the barrier allowed the log to hold onto at least 95 percent of its carbon.
“Scientists and entrepreneurs have long contemplated burying wood as a climate solution. This new work shows that it is possible,” says Daniel Sanchez, an environmental scientist at the University of California. “High-durability, low-cost climate solutions like it hold great promise for fighting climate change.”
Cutting greenhouse gas emissions isn’t enough to reach atmospheric CO2 levels to slow global warming. And some 10 billion more tons of carbon need to be pulled from the atmosphere and stored each year by 2060. Just by growing, plants store the carbon from about 220 billion tons of CO2 each year. But much of that carbon will get released back to the air when the plants die and break down. Stopping just a little part of that breakdown, by burying wood, could help, although this strategy relies on finding conditions that would stop air, water, and microbes (微生物) from breaking down buried carbon for a long time.
Zeng now supposes the clay blanket helped keep oxygen from reaching the log, even though it wasn’t buried very deep. “This kind of soil is relatively widespread. You just have to dig a hole a few meters down and bury wood, and it can be preserved, ” he says. “Burying wood could cost as little as $30 to $100 per ton of CO2, the researchers estimate. However, tech designed to pull carbon directly from the air costs $100 to $300 per ton of CO2.”
It’s not yet clear if scientists can recreate the conditions that preserved the Canadian log. But if so, this method could store up to 10 billion tons of carbon each year.
8. Why did Ning Zeng and his colleagues dig a channel
A. To dig out hidden old logs. B. To carry out an experiment.
C. To store wood for later use. D. To collect enough clay soil.
9. The underlined word “contemplated” in paragraph 3 most probably means “_______”.
A. demonstrated B. employed C. rejected D. considered
10. What conclusion can be drawn from paragraph 4
A. Plants stop releasing CO2 after they die.
B. It is impossible to bury carbon for a long time.
C. Global warming is speeding up rather than slowing.
D. Burying wood could be a possible solution to climate change.
11. What is Zeng’s attitude towards the method of burying wood
A. Supportive. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Uncaring.
D
The way we speak today isn’t the way that people talked thousands or even hundreds of years ago. William Shakespeare’s line “to thine own self be true” is today’s “be yourself”. New speakers.
Ideas, and technologies all seem to play a role in shifting the ways we communicate with each other, but experts don’t always agree on how and why languages change. Now, a new study of American Sign Language (ASL) adds support to one possible reason: sometimes, we just want to make our lives a little easier.
Deaf scholar Naomi from Boston University(BU)and a team of researchers find that ASL signs that are difficult to understand — those hand shapes that are less seen in life — are made closer to the signer’s face, where the observer often looks during sign perception. Instead, common ones, or those with more typical hand shapes, are made further away from the face. The findings of the study suggest that ASL signs have become easier for people to recognize.
With some other researchers, Naomi looked at the evolution (演变) of ASL with the help of an AI tool that analyzed videos of more than 2, 500 signs from ASL-LEX, a database of ASL signs. The researchers then matched the results with data from ASL-LEX on how often the signs and hand shapes are used. The application of AI turned out to be constructive. “We could quickly and clearly figure out the positions of the hands relative to the face in each sign, ” explains Naomi.
This study is part of a new and growing body of work connecting computing and sign language at BU. “The team behind the project is energetic and creative, with sign language researchers working together with computer vision scientists, ” says Lauren Berger from BU.
“Understanding how sign languages work can help improve deaf education,” says Naomi, who hopes the latest findings can bring attention to the diversity of human languages and the amazing abilities of the human mind. “If we just study spoken languages, it is hard to tell the things about languages in general from the things that are unique to spoken languages. Sign languages offer a great opportunity to learn about how all languages work, ” she says.
12. What does the new study find
A. ASL signs have become more understandable than before.
B. ASL signs can convey meanings more directly than spoken languages.
C. ASL is losing popularity among deaf communities.
D. ASL is changing due to the influence of spoken languages.
13. How did Naomi and her team carry out the study
A. By interviewing deaf people who use ASL.
B. By comparing ASL with other sign languages.
C. By using technology to examine videos of ASL signs.
D. By observing deaf people using ASL in real-life situations.
14. Why was ASL chosen to be studied
A. It is free from other language systems. B. There are quite a few experts on it.
C. A large amount of data about it is available. D. It reflects the principles of all languages.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. Studying ASL Brings Insights into Languages.
B. The Evolution of American Sign Language.
C. How Does AI Facilitate Education for the Deaf
D. How Do Sign Languages Differ from Spoken Ones

___18___ Social jet lag has been linked with several chronic (慢性的) health problems. Changes in internal clock caused by inconsistent sleeping hours lead to changes in the circulatory (循环) system and raise the risk of heart disease. Individuals who regularly experience social jet lag are also more likely to smoke cigarettes and consume more caffeine. These habits can significantly influence sleep.
Sticking to your sleep schedule is an important part of addressing social jet lag. ___19___ A 2019 study found that when participants kept their sleep and wakeup times within 15 to 30 minutes of the same time each day, they reported better sleep, less depression, and less stress. Study participants were also able to improve their cognitive reaction time scores.
___20___ If you usually change your regular sleep schedule on weekends, it may be time to try to keep a more consistent one. While it may feel difficult to keep the same sleeping hours each day, you will likely notice the health benefits right away.
A. It can significantly impact your health as well.

“John Tan! Wake up! You are late!” The loud voice of my mother rang in my ears. “Five more minutes...” I said sleepily, covering my ears with my pillow (枕头). I had a habit of being late for school every morning. Despite the repeated warnings of my discipline master and parents, I found it difficult to change.
“I have no time to drive you to school anymore. I need to get to work. Walk to school by yourself!” my mother said in annoyance as she hurried out of the door. As I was about to close my eyes again, realization hit me — Today I was taking my mathematics test! I glanced at the bedside clock. A minute before 7:30 am. “Oh no! I am going to be late!” I panicked as I jumped out of bed.
I got changed, grabbed my schoolbag and ran out of the house like a bolt of lightning. Just as I was about to run across the road, dark clouds filled the sky, appearing above like a heavy curtain. I dug in my schoolbag anxiously for an umbrella but to my regret, I had not packed one as I was late. Running now, I could see the school gate. Then, the heavens opened and I was wet from head to toe. I glanced at my watch. I was out of breath as I was ten minutes late for school!
What if the examination had already started What if I was not allowed to sit it because I was late
A lot of questions flooded my mind at the thought of missing the examination.

【答案】Dear Mike,
I’m writing to tell you about a special class meeting on the theme of “Paying Attention to Mental Health for a Harmonious Campus”.
The class meeting began with a presentation by our head teacher, who explained the basics of mental health and common challenges students might face and introduced strategies for coping with them. After that, the classmates raised some related questions, which the teacher listened to patiently and kindly gave some advice on.
This class meeting made me realize that mental health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being. It felt comforting to know that I’m not alone in my struggles and that there’s a community ready to lend a helping hand.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
I rushed towards the examination hall, my heart pounding in my chest. I prayed that I would still be allowed to take the examination. When I reached the door, I took a deep breath and knocked gently on it. The teacher opened the door, looking confused and a little annoyed. I stammered out an apology and explained my situation. To my relief, she let me in, but warned me not to be late again. I quickly took my seat, trying my best to calm myself down. As I looked at the test paper, my mind almost went blank. But I knew I had to focus and do my best.
After the examination, I walked out of the hall with a mixture of relief and regret. I was relieved that I had been able to take the examination, but in the meanwhile felt a little bit regretful for my habit of being late. I didn’t want to miss out on any opportunities because of my lateness or let my laziness ruin my future. So I decided then and there that I would get rid of the bad habit. I would set multiple alarms and make sure to be on time. As I walked home, still wet from the rain, I had faith in my becoming a more responsible and punctual person.
