Air pollution is one of the world’s invisible killers. It causes seven million deaths a year, making it the largest single environmental health risk. In cities, air pollution is particularly serious. More than 80% of people live in the areas where pollution levels are beyond WHO limits.
One well-established way to reduce air pollution is to plant trees, as their leaves catch and absorb harmful particulates (微粒). But planting new trees is not always a good choice for lack of enough space. That’s why the “City Tree”, a mobile tree which removes pollutants from the air, has been becoming popular in cities around the world, including Oslo, Paris, Brussels and Hong Kong.
Each City Tree is just under 4 meters tall, nearly 3 meters wide and 2.19 meters deep, acting as a chair or a bench. A screen is included for information or advertising. Berlin-based Green City Organization explains that its invention has the environmental benefit of up to 275 actual trees.
But the City Tree isn’t, in fact, a tree at all—it’s a moss culture (青苔培植). “Moss cultures have a much larger leaf surface area than any other plant. That means we can catch more pollutants,” said Zhengliang Wu, co-founder of Green City Organization.
The huge surfaces of moss in each tree can remove dust, NO2 and O3 gases from the air. It requires very little care: solar panels provide electricity, while rainwater is collected into a container and then sent into the soil.
To monitor the health of the moss, the City Tree has sensors which measure soil humidity (湿度), temperature and water quality. “We also have pollution sensors inside the trees, which help monitor the local air quality and tell us how efficient the tree is,” Wu said. Its creators say that each City Tree is able to absorb around 250 grams of particulate matter a day and contributes to removing 480 tons of CO2 a year.

Smart Schoolbag
Forget to pack the books you need into your schoolbag in the morning rush
A schoolboy aged 11 has invented a schoolbag. It tells you which books to pack. A small computer and a scanner (扫描装置) are fixed in the beg. As each book is put into the bag, it is checked by the scanner. If any book is missing, a message will be shown on the computer screen to remind you.

The shapes of the sweets are affected (影响) by wind speed.
The colors of the sweets are decided by temperature. The sweets act as a weather record of the day when they are made.

When I was a little girl, I liked to listen to my father telling his childhood stories. The image of him and his friends climbing to the top of a tree to get a bird’s nest hung in my mind for quite a while. I dreamed of peeking (窥视) into a bird’s nest that had eggs or small baby birds inside, like my father often did when he was a boy.
But that was almost impossible. First, youngsters today are not allowed to climb trees. People think it is too dangerous. Second, we don’t have so many birds’ nests around anymore. The healthy eco-system (生态系统) of Dad’s youth is slowly disappearing.
However, one day, my dream came true. It was a Saturday morning. My dad’s best friend, who I call Uncle Ben, invited us to visit his business. He sold used cars at his shop outside the city. There were a lot of trees around it. Uncle Ben led us through the parking lot, pointing out all kinds of different cars — different makes (品牌), models, years and prices. As we walked across the lot, we suddenly found something unusual —a bird’s nest on top of the back wheel of a big truck!
I was excited to be so close. I looked at the nest in amazement. It was real —a real bird’s nest with a few eggs sitting inside. The nest looked strong and warm. How smart the little bird was to make such a pretty nest. And how creative it was to build the nest on the wheel for shelter (庇护) in this cold Canadian weather!
Uncle Ben took a look at the eggs. He said it was a robin’s (知更鸟的) nest. To protect the nest from being harmed, he suggested that we move it to a tree beside the parking lot.
We all sincerely hoped that the robin found her new home and her baby birds.

12.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.

A.Because Uncle Ben could not stand it.
B.Because the big truck would be sold soon.
C.Because they didn’t want it to get harmed.
14.What is the best title for the text
A.Dream Come True! B.Taking Care of Birds! C.A Robin’s Lucky Day!
15. What can we infer about the writer’s childhood
A. She liked climbing trees as much as her father.

D. She disliked hearing her father's childhood stories.

For a long time, China was isolated (隔离) from the rest of the ancient world due to natural barriers. The Himalayan Mountains lie to the west and the Gobi Desert to the north. To the south are more mountains and seas. To the east lies the great Pacific Ocean that stretches all the way to the west coast of the United States. So Chinese culture developed all by itself.
We know the Chinese had a written language as early as 1500 BC. That is when the Shang dynasty ruled northern China. You can see that Chinese writ ng is very different from the writing in other countries. The Chinese use a different character for each word. People in many countries have to learn only 26 letters, but people in China have to memorize about 600 characters before they can do basic reading and writing.
Many inventions were made and used in China before the rest of the world even heard of them. Around the time of Christ, the Chinese were making silk, porcelain (瓷器) and paper. By this time, the Chinese did trade with other people. Chinese silk was in great demand, even in Europe.
By 600 AD, the Chinese had invented printing and used printing presses (印刷机). A few centuries later, they made the magnetic compass (指南针), which was a great help to sailors. A compass can tell north from south, and enabled the great journeys of discovery.
The Chinese were the first to discover how to make explosive powder, the kind that we use both for gunpowder and for fireworks.
From all this, you can see that the Chinese may have been isolated from other people. However, they were very busy making things that the rest of the world found really exciting and helpful when people learnt about them.
16.According to this passage, what’s the biggest difference between the writing of Chinese and other languages
A.Chinese is more beautiful.
B.Chinese has a longer history.
C.A different character is used for each word.
D.Fewer words should be remembered before reading and writing.
17.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “demand” in paragraph 3
A.Fashion. B.Danger. C.Development. D.Need.
18.What invention is NOT mentioned in the passage
A.Gun. B.Printing. C.Compass. D.Porcelain.

C. The Chinese created the compass to help sailors navigate the seas.
D. The Chinese had to learn only 26 characters to read and write.

How important is music Many people usually think that listening to music is nice, but not very important. It is often only thought to be entertainment, but not the necessary choice for education. This opinion is wrong. 21
Music tells us who we are. Music reflects the musicians’ thoughts and ideas, and the social environment they lived in. For example, Mozart’s music represents(代表) a lifestyle, and rock music also represents a lifestyle. 22 He introduced jazz into his music.
23 Science explains how the sun rises and sets. Music explores(探索)emotional(情绪的)meanings. People need to use every possible way to learn about our world.
Music shows people’s thoughts and feelings. 24 Through the language we express our feelings, discoveries, ideas and hopes. All of these can be shared with others. 25 When we forbid our children to receive a good music education, we take them away from the meanings that music expresses. So music education is much more necessary than people usually think.

例文
In the past few years, I’ve changed a lot, both physically and mentally.
I used to be thin and short. But now I’m tall and strong. I’m a brave and outgoing student. However, I was a little bit shy before. My hobby has changed, too. I used to play computer games on weekends. But now I spend much time playing basketball with my friends. Besides, my English has improved a lot. I used to be afraid of speaking English. Later I tried to listen more and speak more. Now I even dare to make speeches in public in English.
The most important change in my life was becoming interested in reading. Last summer, my best friend gave me an interesting book to read. I enjoyed it so much that I started to read other books. It was the most important change because I learned a lot from reading. What’s more, reading makes me happy and relaxed.
What great changes! I hope I can become better and better.
