The Best Art Shows To Visit
Lost Gardens of London
23 October 2024 to 23 December 2024
The new exhibition will reveal the secret history of some of London’s most attractive forgotten gardens. Thousands of gardens have disappeared across London over the past 500 years ranging from princely private botanical gardens to the ecological parks of the 20th century. A wide range of paintings, photographs and maps will bring these lost spaces to life.
The Garden Museum, 5 Lambeth Palace Rd, London SE17LB.
Silk Roads
26 September 2024 to 23 February 2025
A new exhibition at the British museum will challenge the concept of the Silk Roads as a simple history of trade between East and West. Rather than a single trade route the Silk Roads were made up of overlapping networks linking communities across Asia, Africa and Europe demonstrated by more than 300 objects at this exhibition.
The British Museum, London WC1B3DG.
When Other Worlds Whisper
20 to 26 December 2024
This display features the works by Rosie Emerson, an experimental printmaker who draws from the history of theater and ecology to create rich, extraordinary scenes on paper. Her exhibition is inspired by the grottoes (石窟) of luxury nobles, the reflection of microscopic life, the mysterious patterns of animals, like coral and the secret draws of Victorian cabinets.
The Hayward Gallery, Belvedere Road, London SE18XZ.
The Dog Walk
26 November to 16 December 2024
By the children’s author and illustrator (插画师) Catherine Rayner comes her second show focusing on dogs. Maya Merhige is making major waves in swimming. She is now the third-youngest person to complete an athletic challenge known as the Triple Crown. At the age of 16, she swam 23 miles across the English Channel in the UK with a time of 11 hours, 39 minutes.
Merhige had already completed the other two Triple Crown swims. At age 14, with a time of 10 hours, 48 minutes, she became the youngest female to swim the 20-mile Catalina Channel in California. The next year, she completed the 20 Bridges swim in New York City, a distance of 28.5 miles, in 8 hours, 43 minutes.
Open-water swimming became her passion at age 9 when she got involved with Swim Across America, a nonprofit organization that funds cancer research. "I’ve been feeling as I’ve gotten older that nearly everyone is touched by cancer, and it’s become more important for me to raise money for this cause," Merhige, now 17, said. Since she started, she has raised more than $100,000.
One of her favorite swims was crossing the 28-mile Kaiwi Channel in Hawaii. She swam it at age 15 making her the youngest person to do so. It took her more than 27 hours to complete it, and she faced strong winds and jellyfish.
Despite the great physical and mental challenges of her sport, Merhige said her greatest fear is not finishing a swim, but being unable to join it. Her goal is to complete the Oceans Seven by 2029, and with her Triple Crown swims, she has four more to go. As she considers the journey ahead, Merhige said it helps to constantly remind herself to stay in the moment.

Think back to the last time you wrote a quick note or made a grocery list. Chances are that it wasn’t with pen and paper. Over the past decade, keyboards and screens have quietly taken the place of handwriting in our daily routines, from classrooms to office meetings. Some schools around the world have even stopped teaching handwriting altogether. Yet, research shows that putting pen to paper offers cognitive benefits that digital tools can’t replicate (复制).
"Statistically most studies on the relationship between handwriting and memory show that people are better at remembering things that they have written down, manually than on a computer," says Naomi Susan Baron, former professor of linguistics at American University.
The perks of writing by hand can partly be attributed to the engagement of multiple senses in the writing process. “Holding a pen with our fingers, pressing it on a surface, and moving our hands to create letters and words is a complex cognitive-motor skill that requires a lot of our attention,” says Mellissa Prunty at Brunel University London who has researched the relationship between handwriting and learning.
Adults also benefit from the labor-intensive nature of handwriting. A study involving 42 adults learning Arabic found that participants who learned letters by writing them down by hand were quicker to recognize them, had an easier time naming them, and were better at sounding the newly learned letters out compared with people who were asked to learn the new characters by typing or by just looking at them.
Through surveys with 205 young adults, Baron found that many students report more focus, steadier concentration, and better memory when producing a text by holding a writing instrument rather than pressing keys on a keyboard, suggesting that our sense of touch plays a vital role in the way we absorb information.
8. What is Baron’s opinion about handwriting
A.It helps to memorize things.
B.It is easier and more efficient.
C.It helps improve artistic skills.
D.It should give way to typing.
9. What does the underlined word "perks" in paragraph 3 mean
A.Challenges.
B.Changes.
C.Shortcomings.
D.Advantages.
10. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A.Handwriting is as important as digital tools in learning.
B.Typing enhances learning more than handwriting.
C.Handwriting contributes more to cognitive ability.
D.Adults struggle more with handwriting when learning.
11. What does the text mainly talk about
A.How typing affects our studying skills.
B.Why handwriting still matters in the digital age.
C.The decline of handwriting in modern education.
D.The comparison of multiple learning strategies.
Eating a plant-based diet is good for your health, but not if those plant foods are heavily- processed, a new study has found.
The study reveals that while a plant-based diet is generally healthy, the type of plant foods consumed is significant. The research involved 118,000 adults who were tracked for nearly ten years as part of the UK Biobank and it has shown that heavily-processed plant foods - like sugary snacks and fruit juices - can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. In contrast, minimally processed plant foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, provide protective benefits against cardiovascular (心血管的) diseases.
The study published in Lancet Regional Health-Europe highlights that not all plants foods are equally good. When heavily processed, they lose important nutrients and are often added with unhealthy ingredients like sugar and salt. This processing can cause the body to absorb these foods quickly, which may lead to increased hunger. This process also changes the food’s natural structure, making it less satisfying and potentially raising blood sugar levels.
Lead researcher Fernanda Rauber highlights that the artificial flavors in heavily-processed foods may lead people to prefer these over natural flavors found in whole foods, making healthier choices more challenging. She advises focusing on minimally processed foods and checking ingredient lists for recognizable items. Foods with long lists of additives (添加剂) are often heavily-processed and should be avoided.
The study matches previous findings associating heavily-processed foods with various health issues, including obesity and heart disease. While the research indicates a connection between heavily-processed plant foods and health risks, it does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Overall, prioritizing whole, minimally processed plant foods are essential for maintaining good health.
12. According to the study, what type of foods can increase the risk of heart attacks
A.Whole grains.
B.Sugary snacks.
C.Seasonal vegetables.
D.Newly-picked oranges.
13. What does the study show about heavily-processed plant foods
A.They help improve your digestion system.
B.They can lead to some health problems.
C.They have fewer additives to add to taste.
D.They might reduce blood sugar levels.
14. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To promote minimally processed plant foods.
B.To argue that processed foods are unhealthy.
C.To discourage people from eating plant foods.
D.To reveal that plants-based foods are crucial.
15. Where can the text be found
A.In a history book.
B.In a novel.
C.In a science magazine.
D.In a recipe.

Healthy ways to handle life’s stressors (压力源)
Stressful experiences are normal, with the stress response serving as a survival mechanism. Some stress is positive, like giving a speech in front of a crowd.① Fortunately, here are some approaches to helping you reduce the negative effects of stress.
Change your response to stress.② Your thoughts about what’s causing the stress can change how you respond. You might not always avoid stress, but you can try to reduce your stress. Think about whether you can change things by letting go of some tasks, lowering your expectations, or asking for help.
③ When life feels too busy, people often stop doing fun activities first. However, skipping out on pleasure can make things worse. Even when you’re short on time, find moments for yourself, like reading a book, singing your favorite songs, or watching a funny show. Laughter and humor can help improve both mental and physical health.
Build social support. Having strong social support helps you handle stress better. Connect with friends or family who can listen or offer practical help, like cooking a meal or babysitting.④ Just ensure your relationships are balanced; if you always need help but never give it, it can add to your stress as well.
Protect your sleep. Daytime stress can disrupt sleep at night, which can harm your mood and thinking. To sleep better, avoid caffeine and alcohol in the evening. Limit screen time, as blue light can keep you awake. Stick to a regular routine and relax before bed.⑤
A. Enjoy yourself first.
B. Keep your pleasurable activities.
C. Giving support can boost your mood too.
D. He or she can help you identify situations.
E. Exercise during the day to improve sleep quality.
F. Your stress level depends on the situation and your reaction.
G. But a negative stressor can harm our physical and mental health.

34.
I first met Thomas on a warm Saturday afternoon at my cousin’s wedding. He was a friend of the groom (新郎), having flown a long way for the occasion. As I walked around, helping with the last-minute arrangements, I noticed him standing alone, looking a little lost among the lively crowd. Being part of the host family, I felt it was my duty to introduce myselfand offer him some company. I approached him with a warm smile, hoping to break the ice.
At first, our conversation consisted of polite small talk, but as the evening went on, I sensed a slight tension. Thomas seemed distant, responding to my questions with short answers. Confused and frustrated, I couldn’t understand why he was being unfriendly when I was simply trying to be friendly. After a while, I excused myself, feeling disappointed—what I had hoped was just a pleasant interaction.
As the night continued, I couldn’t get rid of the feeling that Thomas had taken a dislike to me for reasons I couldn’t understand. I shared with my cousin about my feeling, but she just said, “He’s probably just tired.” Still, the unease (不安) stayed in my mind. As hosts, wewanted every guest to feel welcomed and appreciated, so I decided to try again. Later, I approached him by the dessert table, offering him a piece of cake with a smile, hoping to lighten the mood.
This time, Thomas paused, his expression changing. “Listen,” he said, sighing heavily, “I appreciate your efforts, but I’m really not in the best mood to socialize.” He hesitated, and then added, “I’m here for my friend, but I recently lost someone close. It’s just hard to be here celebrating.” Suddenly, it all made sense, and I realized that my earlier guesses were completely wrong.

1.答案: A
Merhige had already completed the other two Triple Crown swims.",加上这次提到的,总共就是三次完成了"Triple Crown"游泳挑战,所以答案是C选项。
I’ve been feeling as I’ve gotten older that nearly everyone is touched by cancer, and it’s become more important for me to raise money for this cause"可知,是她意识到癌症影响着几乎每一个人,这种对癌症影响力的认知促使她为癌症研究去筹集资金,并非是为了打破世界纪录、自己想研究癌症或者自身遭受癌症痛苦等原因,所以选择D选项。
6.答案: C
解析: A选项,原文提到"her greatest fear is not finishing a swim, but being unable to join it.",说明她最害怕的是没办法参与游泳,而不是害怕危险的海洋生物,所以A选项不符合;B选项,文中明确表示她在15岁的次年即16岁完成了20 Bridges swim,并非15岁,所以B选项错误;C选项,文中说"Her goal is to complete the Oceans Seven by 2029",意思是她的目标是到2029年完成"Oceans Seven",也就是在2029年之前完成,所以C选项正确;D选项,原文讲"She swam it at age 15...It took her more than 27 hours to complete it",是花费了超过27小时才完成,不是在27小时内完成,所以D选项错误,本题答案为C选项。
7.答案: A
8.答案: A
Statistically most studies on the relationship between handwriting and memory show that people are better at remembering things that they have written down, manually than on a computer,"says Naomi Susan Baron...
The perks of writing by hand"指的是手写的优势、好处,"Advantages"意思与之相符,"Challenges"表示挑战,"Changes"表示变化,"Shortcomings"表示缺点,都不符合语境,所以选D选项。
12.答案: B
解析: 文中提到"heavily-processed plant foods - like sugary snacks and fruit juices - can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes",明确指出像含糖零食这类经过深度加工的植物性食品会增加心脏病发作的风险,而全麦食品、应季蔬菜、新采摘的橙子都属于未深度加工的健康食品,所以选B选项。
The research involved 118,000 adults...has shown that heavily-processed plant foods...can increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes"以及"
14.答案: A
17.答案: A
22.答案: A

29.答案: A

32.答案: that/which ; to create ; religious ; forms ; is recognized; developing ; to ; before ; rarely ; an
解析: ①此处考查定语从句,先行词是"a fascinating folk art"(一种迷人的民间艺术),在从句"involves pouring hot, molten sugar onto a stone or marble surface..."

34.答案:
I invited him for a quiet walk in the garden, away from the celebrations. We walked slowly along the path, the soft light of the garden lamps casting a gentle glow around us. I listened as Thomas shared his story, the pain of
his loss evident in his voice. He talked about the person he had lost, the memories they had shared, and the emptiness he now felt. I offered my condolences and shared some of my own experiences with loss, trying to create a connection between us. As we walked, I could feel the tension melting away, replaced by a sense of understanding and empathy.
With a smile on his face, Thomas took my hand and thanked me sincerely. “I didn’t expect to find someone to talk to tonight,” he said. “Thank you for listening and understanding. It’s been a tough time, but your kindness has made it a little easier.” We stood there for a moment, looking at each other, knowing that we had shared something special. Then, we walked back to the party, hand in hand, ready to face the rest of the evening together. From that moment on, Thomas and I became good friends, bound by the understanding and compassion we had found in each other on that warm Saturday afternoon.
