Babbel is an excellent language tool to help you progress step by step with learning a new language. It helps you learn grammar along the way as you work your way through the tasks and assignments. Standing on the ruins after the fire where his house had been, Peter Ruprecht recognized that he was not sure how or when to rebuild. He was still shocked by what Australia’s increasingly changeable climate had already delivered: first a drought, then a destructive bush fire, then heavy rain from a storm.
“It’s unstoppable,” said Mr. Ruprecht, a former dairy farmer. “We speak about the warmth of Mother Nature, but nature can also be vicious and wild and unforgiving.”
Australia’s hellish (地狱的) fire season has come to an end, but its people are facing more than a single disaster. With floods destroying homes not far from where fires recently spread, they are facing a cycle of what scientists call “compound extremes”: one climate disaster strengthening the next.
Warmer temperatures do more than just dry out the land. They also heat up the atmosphere(大气层), which means clouds hold more moisture (水汽) for longer periods of time. So droughts get worse, giving way to fires, then to heavy rains that the land is too dry to take in.
Many Australians in disaster areas complain that their government, after paying little attention to climate change for years, has not yet to make recovery plans that are clear and that take future risks into consideration.
At the same time, the economic costs of a changing climate are rising quickly. Philip Lowe, the governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, warned recently that Australia was already paying a price, and that it would only go up.
24. Peter Ruprecht is mentioned in the beginning to ______.
A. to arouse readers’ pity B. to introduce the topic
C. to stress the problem D. to call on readers to help
25. Which word can replace the underlined word “vicious” in Paragraph 2
A. Graceful. B. Balanced. C. Responsible. D. violent
26. What is the main cause of “compound extremes” in Australia
A. Government inaction. B. Warmer temperature.
C. The shortage of money. D. No recovery plans.
27. Where is the text probably from
A. A guidebook. B. A travel journal.
C. A news report. D. A book review.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity; others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求) of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an totally different attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame(责备) competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to weaken can we discover a new meaning in competition.
28. What does this passage mainly talk about
A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.
B. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
C. Opinions about competition are different among people.
D. Failures are necessary experiences in competition.
29. Why do some people prefer competition according to the passage
A. Because it builds up a sense of duty.
B. Because it pushes society forward.
C. Because it improves personal abilities.
D. Because it encourages individual efforts.
30. What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to fail
A. One’s success is based on how hard he has tried.
B. One’s success in competition needs great efforts.
C. One’s achievement is determined by his particular skills.
D. One’s worth lies in his performance compared with others.
31. Which point of view may the author agree to
A. Fear of failure should be taken away in competition.
B. Competition should be encouraged.
C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.
D. Every effort should be paid back.
D
For many, travel isn’t just about the destination — it’s about making the most of the journey. However, for a lot of people, the journey is often ruined by an uncomfortable experience often accompanied by vomiting(呕吐), known as motion sickness. If you’ve ever felt the unwelcome urge to vomit while reading or using your device in a moving vehicle, you’re not alone. Recognizing this common issue, Apple has stepped up to offer a solution: the Vehicle Motion Cues feature(功能) for iPhones and iPads.
Motion sickness occurs when there is a disconnect between what your eyes see and what your body feels. When you’re in a moving vehicle, your body senses motion through its vestibular system (the inner ear), but if your eyes are focused on a still screen that doesn’t reflect this movement, the brain receives mixed signals. This sensory(感官的) conflict can lead to dizziness(头晕), nausea, and overall discomfort – symptoms(症状)all too familiar to motion sickness sufferers.
Apple’s new Vehicle Motion Cues feature is designed to bridge this gap and bring relief to those likely to experience motion sickness. This feature works by showing animated(动画的) dots around your screen, which move at the same time and speed as the motion of your vehicle. These moving cues help keep the motion your body feels in agreement with what your eyes see, effectively reducing the sensory mismatch that causes motion sickness. By matching the visual input with the physical sensations of motion, your brain is less likely to experience the confusion that leads to sickness.
Early reports and user feedback(反馈) indicate that Vehicle Motion Cues is receiving high praise for its effectiveness. So next time you embark on a journey, whether short or long, remember that Apple’s got your back — or rather, your brain - helping you make the most of every mile with ease and comfort.
32. Which type of people can be interested in Vehicle Motion Cues
A. Frequent travelers. B. Book lovers.
C. Vehicle operators. D. Sport scientists.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The principle of Apple’s new design.
B. The cause of motion sickness.
C. The functions of Apples new design.
D. The symptoms of motion sickness.
34. By displaying animated dots around the screen, Applet Vehicle Motion Cues is able
to_____.
A. ease sensory conflicts in the brain
B. tell the mismatched physical sensations
C. balance the movement of our eyes and body
D. increase the effectiveness of vehicle motion
35. Which can be the best title of the passage
A. Make the Most of Your Journey: Apple Bridges the. Gap
B. Find the Magic of a Moving Vehicle: Apple’s Got! Your Back
C. Enjoy Your Reading: Apple Offers a Revolutionary Solution
D. Say Goodbye to Motion Sickness: Apple Introduces Its New Design

During New Year’s Eve, some people travel to Times Square for the official count down. 36 For my family, we preferred to spend a quiet evening at home, dully killing the time and trying to stay awake until midnight. This didn’t change until my friend gave me a gift years ago.
It was a box of 365 cards - one for each day of the year. The idea was to write on the cards daily as one would write in the journal. I decided to use the cards as a “family journal” with highlight s of each day. I didn’t have high hopes that I would keep up with this for a whole year. 37 I kept writing and finally successfully wrote something on every card on every day of 2012.
On New Year’s Eve, my husband and sons were curious about what I had been writing all year. We decided we would start with the first card and read them all aloud together. We took turns reading a whole month’s worth of cards before passing the box to the next person. 38
Some cards would say something simple like, “we took a family walk after dinner tonight.” Others would say something important like, “ 39 ” As the cards were read, we would make comments like, “That was an amazing day.” After that evening, I continued writing on cards and on New Year’s Eve, we read them together.
40 It’s a wonderful way for us to think about the year that has passed and look forward to the new year that begins at midnight. Besides, it brings us fun, preventing us dully spending New Year’s Eve. Moreover, it gathers us together and strengthens our bond.
A. This family tradition is significant to us.
B. We had a terrible quarrel with each other.
C. Unfortunately, I have never kept a journal.
D. At midnight, we finished reading the 365 cards.
E. Today, we celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary.
F. Some have exciting gatherings with family and friends.
G. But for some reason, I was highly motivated to fill up those cards.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping(哭泣) sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding(训斥) from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles "
"Oh, yes...but I don't have money on me…" she replied.
"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
"What is it " asked the man kindly.
"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!"
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her "
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb(麻木的) with shock; she remembered mother's familiar face and weathered(饱经风霜的) hands. "Why did I not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me."

Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. When she knocked at the door, she found the door was locked and her mother was not in. Tired and sad, she sat down in front of the house silently.“Where could mother be ” She wondered, “Was she really so angry with me that she didn’t want to show any care for me ” Again, the scene of the quarrel appeared in her mind. Realizing that all the scolding from her mother was due to the fact that her mother really cared a lot about her, she felt deeply ashamed, tears rolling down her cheeks.
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. She raised her head to see the familiar face and the worried eyes.“Here you come! I’ve been looking for you,” came the tired voice. Jenny couldn’t help throwing herself into her mother's arms."Mum, I’m so sorry and thank you for all you have done for me." She expressed her sincere apology and great gratitude. Hardly had her mother heard this when she smiled, patting Jenny’s back gently.
