Teachers can now register their classrooms for a student-led global project aimed at
empowering teenagers to design their own strategies to tackle plastic pollution.
Overview
The project's name, created by an environmental explorer and project founder,
symbolizes the systematic reduction of disposable (用后即丢弃的)plastics through changing
norms and behaviors to address the root causes of pollution. The goal is to reach 25 countries
within three years. The English version launched in 2023 has already attracted over 65 schools
from 23 countries.
Timeline
The project will officially open for registration to English-speaking students this summer.
Classrooms participating in the project will be led by teachers and supported by the project
team in a three-month period. During the time, student teams will design practical strategies
to address plastic pollution in their communities. Students will also have the opportunity to
showcase their solutions and interact with like-minded peers from around the world at a
festival in Florida next November, either in person or virtually.
Details
Interested teachers and school administrators can register their classrooms for the English
version of the project by visiting the relevant website. The project uses a project-based
learning approach and targets students aged 15-16, aiming to make young people the main
drivers of their learning. By empowering young people to design and implement their own
solutions, the project hopes to help the next generation of local and global community become
innovators.
Over the next two years, the project will network with teachers worldwide and offer the
project for free to international schools in both Spanish and English.

As the hometown of ancient China*s most famous traveler, Xu Xiake, Jiangyin has
become a modern destination for travelers from around the world. Such contemporary
attractions as an extremely rich village in China, a horse museum and traditional
neighborhoods attract people to the explorer's hometown. But ancient adventurer and 第
geographer Xu Xiake remains a main draw.
The county-level city in Jiangsu Province annually celebrates the birth anniversary of the 撵
expert in the Ming Dynasty, whose book, The Travel Diaries of Xu Xiake, is still widely
read. Xu spent over three decades traveling throughout 16 imperial provinces, describing his
explorations in detail. His diaries belong to the ancient category of Mtravel literature“ that is
known not only for taking travel as its subject but also describing the author's experiences 才
with narrative prose.
Xu was born to a wealthy feitte由卜岫函 to power and particularly,

landscapes over official positions. He took after his dad and enjoyed books on history,
geography and adventure. He especially enjoyed reading about China*s mountains and rivers. m
During his childhood, he decided he would see them himself when he grew up. He took the
imperial exam at age 15, but failed. His father encouraged him to study out of interest rather
than a desire for status. Xu's dad died when he was 19. As a son, he remained in Jiangyin out 明
of filial piety (孝道)until age 22, when he set off to discover the outside world, with his
mother's blessings. 鳏
Xu not only recorded his experiences but also documented such geographical and topical
features as gorges and mineral beds with scientific accuracy. He is credited with discovering
the Yangtze River's headwaters. People often visit his former residence in Jiangyin. Some
valuable passages from The Travel Diaries of Xu Xiake have been written on the stone tablets.

In spring and fall, migratory (迁徙的) birds make adventurous trips between distant
sites. A new study suggests birds do not make these journeys alone, and they may actually be
teaming up with other species during migration.
Scientists generally thought that birds of different species merely happened to fly near
each other while migrating, without interacting much. But the new research suggests this
sharing of space isn't by chance. Instead, the creatures create diverse migrating groups with
different species, which could prove to be beneficial to the birds. "It seems like common
施 sense: When all of these birds are concentrating in really high densities, they are likely
interacting with each other,“ says Joely DeSimone, the study's lead author.
% Tracing the interactions between migrating animals can be difficult, but DeSimone and
her co-authors approached the task by focusing on stopover sites-locations where birds rest
K and refuel during their migratory journeys. These sites also often serve as bird banding
stations, where researchers capture birds in lightweight mist nets, study them and attach tiny
numbered bands to their很静目踪ovRreleasin鲜倘血bti由 into the wild.

DeSimone and her team studied more than half a million records collected over 20 years to
analyze birds* social networks. "We found support for communities on the move-considering

migrating birds as part of interacting communities rather than random gatherings of
independently migrating species. This work could change the way we study and conserve

animal migrations, says study co-author Emily Cohen.
In the study, the researchers focused on noting which species were present together and

which species didn't overlap (重叠)at a stopover site. They ran an analysis, but they didn't
record specific interactions between the birds. aThrough our efforts, we could be seeing
connections among birds that are chasing each other into the net, or we could be observing
aggressive relationships,M DeSimone says.
“The presence of other birds with similar food preferences may signal to newcomers
where the good habitat is, helping them refuel more quickly,“ DeSimone adds. For now, the
paper is already pioneering a shift in understanding bird migrations.
28. What does the new study suggest about migratory birds
A. They don't interact on the way.
B. They form cross-species migrating communities.

D. They migrate alone rather than in groups.

A Swiss green tech company has begun industrial-scale production of solar fuels, which
have the potential to create sustainable, carbon-neutral (碳中和的)fuel to power long
distance flights.
Electrification is often advertised as the alternative to fossil fuels, but there are currently
some areas such as marine and aviation (航空)transportation where that hasn,t been possible.
Those sectors are difficult to decarbonize because they require denser fuels. Solar fuels, liquid
fuels created by using the power 玷'Ufcwlm宜。existing technology and function
just as existing fuels do. They could pack a lot of power into a little space, making them ideal
for shipping or long flights.
Plus, shipping and aviation account for as much as eight percent of global greenhouse gas
emissions. What the company aims to do, according to Furler, CEO of the company, is to
reverse the burning process. "We take water and carbon dioxide they emit, and get them into
a synthetic (合成的)fuel, thereby closing the carbon cycle,“ said Furler.
While that sounds suspicious, it's rooted in sound science. The first step is to capture
carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. Unfortunately, because carbon dioxide
constitutes a mere 0. 04 percent of all atmospheric gases, concentrating it on an industrial
scale is an immense challenge. So the company is focusing on using biomass and specifically
agricultural waste products. Mirrors then focus sunlight on a M receiverw atop the tower,
generating steam that combines with the biomass and water that are fed into a reactor in the
tower. This drives a chemical reaction that creates a synthesized gas of carbon monoxide and
hydrogen, which is then liquefied by a further series of chemical reactions into liquid
hydrocarbons (炒.
Some carbon will still be emitted, but it's a significant reduction of 85 to 90 percent
compared to traditional fuel. While the new facility advances commercial solar fuel
production, it will still take decades to efficiently manufacture enough solar fuel to replace
fossil fuels.
【高三英语第6页(共10页)】 25 - 259C -
32. Why do solar fuels have an advantage over electric energy
A. They provide stronger power.
B. They have a greater energy density.
C. They exist in more than liquid form.
D. They are better at reducing carbon emissions.
33. What does the underlined word “reverse“ in paragraph 3 mean
A. Turn around. B. Speed up. C. Shorten. D. Simplify.
34, How does the approach get the carbon needed for solar fuels now
A. By removing from waste.
B. By making with chemicals.
C. By obtaining from biological material.
D. By collecting directly from the air.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. The mirror turns sunlight directly into fuels.
B. The process removes carbon emissions completely.
C. Solar fuels reduce the use of conventional fuels by 90%.
D. Solar fuels can not completely replace fossil fuels now.

参考范文:
On the way home Noah and Lucas balked about the small kindness. Noah said,
“Sometimes it takes a lot of courage to help others. Today's event shows me that even the
smallest act of kindness can have a big impact. " Lucas agreed and suggested they let this not
be the end of their helping others. They could keep looking for opportunities to make a
difference with their actions. They could volunteer at local events help their classmates, and
even assist their families more.
Knowing they could do more 9 Noah and Lucas decided to start a small community
group. They invited their friends to join them. They organized regular activities, like helping
elderly neighbors with groceries cleaning up local parks, or even tutoring younger students
who needed help with their homework. Feeling proud of what they had accomplished, they
were looking forward to the good they could do in the future. They were happy to know that
their actions, no matter how small could make a big difference in their community.
