According to Chinese history, sky lanterns were first used by Zhuge Kongming. He sent them out to ask for help when in trouble. Today, sky lanterns are used at festivals and other celebrations. They are made of bamboo and covered with paper. When the lanterns are lit, they slowly rise into the air like small hot-air balloons for all to see. They are seen as bright symbols of happiness and good wishes.

It is held to celebrate the first full moon of the year. It also means the end of the spring festival holiday.
The Qingming Festival(Tomb Sweeping Festival)
Qingming Festival ( or Tomb-sweeping Day), which falls on either April 4th or 5th of the solar calendar（公历）, It started over 2500 years ago during the Zhou Dynasty.it is also a day of paying respect to the dead, a spring outing, and other activities, among which the main ones are tomb sweeping, taking a spring outing, and flying kites.
The most popular activity of the Qingming Festival is tomb sweeping. Family members will honor their ancestors by visiting their tombs, offering wine, food and fruits as well as burning incense(香) and joss paper. It is customary to sweep the tomb, remove all weeds and add fresh soil. Some also put willow branches on the on tomb to protect the ancestor from evil spirits. It is also traditional to wear willow branches and place them on in gates and front doors to prevent evil spirits.
Not only is the Qingming Festival a day for commemorating（为...举行纪念活动） the dead, it is also a time for people to enjoy themselves. During March, everything in nature takes on a new look, as trees turn green, flowers blossom, and the sun shines brightly. It is a fine time to go out and to appreciate the beautiful scenes of nature. This custom can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) and followed by each dynasty later till today. So visitors can be seen everywhere during the month of the festival.Spring outings not only add joy to life but also promote a healthy body and mind.
Flying kites is an activity favored by many people during the Qingming Festival. Kites are not only flown during the daytime but also in the evening. In the past,people cut the string while the kite is in the sky to let it fly free. It is said this brings good luck and that diseases can be eliminated by doing this.
All in all, the Qingming Festival is a combination of sadness and happiness.
