About 10 percent of public school students in the United States learn English as a second language. In some states, that number is much higher. About five million students in the country are considered English language learners, or ELLs. Such students are the fast-growing group in the US public schools.
The most commonly first spoken languages among ELLs in America are Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Haitian Creole and Vietnamese. Speakers of those five languages make up 92 percent of all ELLs included in the report.
English language learners can choose one of several kinds o1 program. There are some programs, in which students are mostly taught in their native language. And there are other programs, which offer students almost all classroom teaching in English. However, These kinds of programs do not always allow students to write and read in their native language.
There are also so-called bilingual programs. These programs offer teaching in two languages-English and another language. Research has shown that English language learners do best in bilingual programs, especially if the second language is their native language.
The lack of high-quality bilingual programs is clear. Nationally, about 83 percent of students complete their high school education. But the graduation rate (比率) among English language learners is far lower 65 percent.
School systems across the country sometimes look for bilingual educators internationally. But education experts say there are ways for states to find and train new teachers in their own areas. This spring, America came up with a list of “grow your own” rules for schools and states to follow. It advised states to offer a series of ways for bilingual teachers. It also suggested training bilingual teachers in their own areas even if they do not have a college degree.

Living on the Florida Emerald Coast, people view a hurricane(飓风) as a common thing. So it is not unusual for a family to have several full gas cans(金属容器) and bottled water stored in their houses all summer.
Though unwilling to evacuate(撤离) from a hurricane, on September 15,my family was forced to leave our home for my grandfather's house several miles away. We spent the early part of that evening watching the hurricane draw closer on the Weather Channel. Around nine o'clock, a loud sound shook the house, turned over the roof and carried it off. Soon came an indoor rainstorm.
Realizing the damage, my grandfather began to be afraid. The storm had started, but he still ran out into the heavy rain and wind to see how much of the roof was left. We got him back inside. I had never seen him so scared. Mom finally asked him to lie down in his room.
The leak(裂缝) had progressed rapidly. It soon became a race against time to protect what was saved. Some people may think it necessary to save material things, but I hoped to save those items with emotional value, such as the photos. I still feared the storm, but I more feared the influence it brought.
The next morning, it started to clear up. Thankfully, my family weathered the storm, though the same could not be said for the house. Only the wooden beams remained, but inside many of his things were safe. My mom and I had worked tirelessly through the night.
It was late, but we were still unwilling to go to bed. We discussed the rebuilding of the house. Under the beautiful sky, we suggested looking after my grandfather more often in the future. After this disaster, I realized the truth that the hurricane itself was not so terrible if we loved each other.
32.Why do the people store full gas cans and bottled water
A. To save much money. B. To watch a hurricane easily.
C. To protect their houses well. D. To be prepared for hurricanes.
33. How did the author's grandfather feel during the hurricane
A. Frightened. B. Surprised. C. Calm. D. Angry.
34. What does the underlined word "weathered" in paragraph 5 mean
A. Prepared well for. B. Waited patiently for.
C. Came safely through. D. Suffered seriously from.
35. What may the author learn from the experience
A. Family love is powerful. B. Take things as they come.
C. Good health is over wealth. D. Lost time is never found again

It was the first day of the new school year. Sylvia entered the music room at a high school. The 65-year-old music teacher was known for being strict in class. Many students were afraid of her and not interested in this class. They attended music class only because they needed the credit(学分). But Sylvia took her job seriously.
One day, she walked to the piano in the corner and started leading the students into a song to get them warmed up. And she quickly called out anyone who tried to joke around and punished them, which might explain why some students didn’t like her.
Soon enough, her class was almost over and one student asked curiously, “What do you like to listen to at home ” “Surely, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky,” another student laughed, making some others laugh. “I actually like a lot of pop music, and even some of the things you listen to nowadays. But I prefer to listen to classic music,” Sylvia replied, smiling at the kids.
Some returned the smile and started asking about some singers and bands. But the bell rang before she could answer all their questions and they had to leave. However, it seemed like the fear in her students had been relieved(缓解) a bit that day. And she was hopeful they would warm up to her, even with her strict ways. Soon enough, the students got used to her and started taking her lessons more seriously.
However, in the middle of the school year, Sylvia’s husband suddenly died. And she wasn’t in the mood for work afterwards. The school allowed her to stay at home for two weeks. At home, Sylvia was sad and hopeless. She didn’t even listen to music anymore.
Before long, her students learned she had lost her husband and that she was sad. Soon, the students decided to practice playing certain music that could be in memory of her husband and cheer her up. When Sylvia returned to their class, they’d surprise her by playing the music.
注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答。
After making the decision, the students chose the proper music and prepared music and instruments.
When Sylvia entered the music room, the beautiful music sounded.

Dear Tom,
I understand that you’re feeling anxious about starting high school and worried about whether you'll fit in or not. Please don’t feel too stressed out; almost everyone feels the same way when going through such a transition.
To help you manage the pressure, here are some suggestions. Firstly, take the initiative to introduce yourself to new classmates and teachers. Being proactive can help you build friendships faster. Secondly, join clubs or sports teams that interest you, which not only enriches your life but also provides a platform where you can meet people who share similar interests. Lastly, remember that it’s okay to ask for help if you feel overwhelmed.
I truly believe that you will adapt quickly and enjoy your time in high school. Looking forward to hearing about your new experiences.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
After making the decision, the students chose the proper music and prepared musical instruments. Then they divided the class into different groups, with some playing instruments and others singing. When the tasks were assigned, the students began to practice the music. Although it was challenging, they worked together, not giving up. Finally, it was time for Sylvia to return to school. Still sad and hopeless, Sylvia headed to school. Before her class began, the students reached the music room, ready for the performance.
When Sylvia entered the music room, the beautiful music sounded. She was surprised to find her students held up their instruments and played a beautiful tune for her. As her students finished the music, tears filled her eyes. Her students approached her one by one, hugging her tightly. Sylvia thanked them for their kindness. After a few minutes, she wiped her tears. “OK, let’s get back to work!” she said, her voice still emotional. But her words made everyone laugh. They knew their strict teacher was back, and it made them happy.
