The children’s book, The Little Prince, is one of the best-selling books in the world. French pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupery wrote it in 1943. The book is very imaginative and teaches us about what it means to be human. In the story, a pilot crashes (坠毁) his plane in the desert. This is a song millions of Americans hear on New Year’s Eve. This is a song we hear in some classic movies like The Gold Rush, Waterloo Bridge and It’s a Wonderful Life. This is a song that has different versions (版本) around the world. It is called Auld Lang Syne (《友谊地久天长》).
Actually, Auld Lang Syne is an old Scottish poem. No one knows who wrote the poem first. However, a version by Scottish poet Robert Burns was published in 1796. The title Auld Lang Syne is believed to be an old Scottish way of saying “a long time ago”. The opening lines of the song “Should days of auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and days of Auld Lang Syne ” mean we should have a drink to remember whatever is passing, and remember old friends. In Scotland, on New Year’s Eve it’s a tradition to play the song with its national instrument called the bagpipe. The bagpipe makes special sound and it has a special look, with a bag at the bottom (底部) and one or several pipes (管子) connected to the bag. And the bagpiper (风笛手), who plays this instrument, is required to wear traditional Scottish clothes—kilts.
When the Scots moved to America in the 1800s, they brought the song with them. But the Canadian bandleader Guy Lombardo made it well-known to the public. In 1965, he explained to a reporter of Life Magazine how he connected the song with New Year’s Eve: “Auld Lang Syne is our theme song. We end every dance with it.”

Recently, I asked a seeing friend who had just walked in the woods what she had noticed. “Nothing special,” she replied.
How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk through the woods and see nothing worthy of note I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me only through touch. The following day, I should spend in the world of common people going about the business of life. At midnight permanent (永久的) night would close in on me again, and I should realize how much I had left unseen.
I who am blind can give one suggestion to those who see: Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be blind. The same is true of other senses. Hear the songs of birds, as if you would be deaf tomorrow. Smell the flowers, as if tomorrow you could never smell again ... But of all the senses, I’m sure that sight must be the most pleasant.

Is it better to read a book or to see the film based on the book Different people have different opinions.
Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the original. The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. Besides, the film is usually more interesting. Some others have the opposite opinion. They think that they can get more information from the original work. And the language in the book is more lively and beautiful.
For me, I agree with the second view. I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in my own room, and I am able to better understand the author’s ideas.
