Do you know the word “migrate”
“Migrate” is usually used to talk about certain animals such as birds and fish. When animals migrate, they travel a long way from one part of the world to another according to the season. Many animals migrate—they do this often at the same time and to the same place each year. They move to places where conditions are better—where the weather is warmer, where there is more food and water, or where their young will be safer.
People also migrate. When people migrate, they go to live in another area or country, especially in order to find work. In England, when people leave their home country in order to live in another country, we use the word “emigrate” instead of “migrate”. From “migrate” and “emigrate” come the words “migration” and “emigration”. However, if people move from their home country to another to live there evermore (永久地), the word changes from “emigrate” to “immigrate” in the English language. Then the word “immigration” is born.

Cleaning for a Reason began as an idea years ago when Debbie, the owner of Buckets & Bows Cleaning Service. took a call from a possible customer asking about house cleaning. After knowing the price, the woman refused, saying, “I can’t afford that now—I’m in cancer treatment,” then hung up and ended the call.
Debbie, whose mother was a cancer patient was surprised. This was before Caller ID, so she couldn’t call back. Disappointed, she had missed the opportunity to help the woman. Debbie made a decision to provide free home cleaning whenever her company met a woman fighting cancer.
Debbie wasn’t the only one long to lend a helping hand. In 2005, Debbie shared her story with other cleaning companies at a trade show for the Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association. She shared that it was these women, undergoing the different kinds of hardships of cancer treatment, who needed house cleaning services the most, that pushed her to create Cleaning for a Reason. It connects women fighting cancer with local companies that were inspired to take the idea countrywide and would clean their homes for free. “We’re the matchmaker,” explains Debbie, “We match the patient with the cleaning service.”
Luckily, Cleaning for a Reason has grown to more than 1,200 cleaning partners, serving cancer patients throughout the country. The Cleaning for a Reason office runs with volunteers to deal with more than 1,200 patient applications (申请) each month. It has been two months since Richard Watson wore 200 special transmitters (信号发射机) for his cows. They are parts of an artificial intelligence (AI) system named Ida. This AI system can send messages to Watson’s phone when his cows are healthy or when they are not feeling well, and it can tell how many animals are sick to the dairy farmers (奶农) and also help them pick out the sick animals.
With the AI system, farmers can get the information they need from their phones instead of going to the farms to check animals every day. So, this AI system can help people spare their time to do other things. Many dairy farmers are interested in Ida. Watson is one of them. On a common morning in March, he pulled out his phone to check his Ida App. It showed that Cows #97800 and #97782 were eating less. This might mean that there was something wrong with them.
However, some farmers say, “I can find out the cow that isn’t feeling great just by looking at her eyes.” Mark Rodgers is a neighbor of Watson’s. He said, “This is what I can do by myself. My experience can help me look after them better. Technology isn’t always useful.”
Ida was developed by the company Connecterra. Yasir Khokhar, the company’s boss, said he came up with the idea while he was living on a farm in Holland. The system can record cow’s behaviors by studying videos of them. It now can track seven cows’ behaviors. The company is still trying to improve this technology to provide much more convenience (便利) for farmers.
