Enjoying her first-ever trip to the United Kingdom for the celebration of the Guinness World Records Day 2024, Rumeysa, the world’s tallest woman, couldn’t wait to experience London’s unique vibrancy (活力) and tick off her bucket list some sightseeing spots. In London, she has been named as the Guinness World Records ICON: a new category of the most excellent records introduced for the book’s 2025 edition, to honor the cream of the crop of record-breaking achievements.
Originally from Turkiye, where she lives with her family, the 27-year-old, standing at 215.16 cm, achieved global fame thanks to her record-breaking height: a status that is fully matched by her drive and determined efforts to make the world a more inclusive, kinder place.
After being recognized as the tallest living female when she was 17, Rumeysa was confirmed to be the tallest woman living in 2021. She also holds the records for the largest hands, the longest back and the longest ears on a woman.
Rumeysa’s impressive height is due to a condition called Weaver syndrome, an extremely rare genetic condition that causes bone overgrowth. Doctors have only identified about 50 cases of Weaver syndrome worldwide. Rumeysa was the 27th case ever diagnosed, and the first ever in Turkiye.
Although the record holder has challenged stereotype (刻板印象) all her life and faced horrible situation, she never allowed hardships and negativity to stop her: as she works as an ambassador for diversity and positivity, her powerful voice continues to inspire and educate the crowds.

Do you feel like you always need to use GPS to get around Never quite sure if it’s a left or a right turn — even though you just looked at a map Are you tired of outsourcing your own body’s sense of direction to an app It can be anxiety-inducing, but researchers who study this topic believe that you can do something to gain more confidence while navigating.
“Let go of your fear of getting lost, be observant and practice keeping a sense of direction in your head as you travel,” says Mary Hegarty, a cognitive psychologist at the Spatial Thinking Lab at University of California. An over-reliance on GPS can also lead to a narrower view of your surroundings, she says. “You’re not paying attention to the broader environment that gives you cues of where you are in space.”
In fact, people who have a good internal compass may have a deeper connection to the world around them, says Hugo Spiers, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London. He studied the brains of London cab drivers, who are required to memorize about 25,000 street names in the city in order to get the job. And he found that once the cab drivers mastered the names, they had a real sense of ownership of the city — and greater power over their environment.
If you want to gain confidence on the road or be less reliant on GPS to get around, just turn off your GPS and get lost on purpose to boost your sense of direction. Next time you go for a stroll or drive down a street, and you’re not pressed for time, try to find your way around town, then see if you can make it back home without a GPS from your destination, says Ben Gero, an outdoor recreation specialist with Cleveland Metroparks, who helps kids from the city get used to the outdoors and teaches skills like navigation.

Researchers think they’ve observed “dark oxygen” being created on the Pacific Ocean floor, potentially challenging commonly held ideas about how oxygen appeared on Earth.
Until now, it was thought that oxygen was created only through photosynthesis (光合作用), a process that requires sunlight. But the discovery casts doubt on that theory and raises new questions about the origins of life itself.
The scientists aren’t certain how oxygen is created at such dark depths, but they believe it’s being produced by electrically charged minerals called polymetallic nodules (多金属结核). These nodules — “effective batteries in a rock”, professor Sweetman said— may use their electric charge to separate hydrogen (氢气) and oxygen from seawater.
“The traditional view is that oxygen was first produced around three billion years ago and there was a gradual development of complex life after that,” said Sweetman. “The potential that there was another source requires us to have a rethink.”
Researchers conducted tests on the seafloor and also collected nodules to test above ground, and they got the same result: that oxygen levels increased near the nodules.
Franz Geiger, a professor who worked on the study, said that there may be enough polymetallic nodules in the Pacific Ocean to meet global energy demands for decades. But he also said that mining would have to be conducted in a way that did not affect life forms in that part of the ocean.
Companies conducted exploratory missions for deep-sea mining in the 1970s and 1980s, Geiger said, and recent research suggests that those missions may have had effects on sea life in the area for decades.
“A few years ago, a team of scientists went back to those areas that were mined 40 years ago and found essentially no life,” Geiger said. “And then a few hundred meters over to the left and right, where the nodules were untouched, there are plenty of life.”
