When 1 (travel) in a train, a gentleman felt thirsty and got down at a station in search of water. No sooner had he reached the water tap than the engine whistled and started, so he missed the train.
It was getting 2 (dark) and he decided to find a place for a day’s stay. So he went to a small hut and asked the villager. The villager 3 (glad) agreed. With the villager’s
4 (permit), he could stay in his house for a day. That day the villager served the gentleman food and gave him a room to rest. Surprisingly, the villager neither asked nor expected anything
5 return.
At night, the gentleman heard a knock at the door. When the villager opened the door, the gentleman saw that a man 6 (dress) in rich clothes entered the hut and demanded the villager pay 7 (he) debts. The gentleman realized that the villager was in need of money. The next morning, he put a pocket on the table and 8 (leave). When the villager came to know about 9 pocket, he saw there was a note addressed to him, it read, “You helped me but did not expect anything from me. Yesterday I heard the conversation between you and the stranger and came to know that you were in need of money. This is 10 you need”.
(二)
Climate change really does change everything, including language. In October, Oxford English Dictionary (OED) released 1 update on its language on climate change and environmental sustainability.
Some new words 2 (include) in the dictionary so far. The OED doesn’t include chemical formulas, 3 it has made an important exception for CO because it has become, in its words, deeply-rooted in our everyday language.
“Global heating” is also a new entry. Although people got used to using global warming, OED said that global heating is being used 4 (often). That’s because while global warming suggests a kind of comfort, global heating conveys “the seriousness of climate change 5 (cause) by human activity and the urgent need to address it”.
Apart from 6 (add) these new words, some old words about climate have been given new meanings. The phrase “climate refugee” is an example. In the 19th century, when people spoke of climate refugees, they would be describing those 7 had moved to a place where the climate is healthier.
But now, as climate changes and weather events appear 8 (frequent), the phrase refers to the people who are forced to move in response to extreme weather or rising sea levels.
Trish Stewart, OED science 9 (edit), said the update reflects the very real sense of urgency of climate change now.
What happens next depends 10 so many factors but, one thing we can be sure of is that our language will continue to evolve and to tell the story.

A
Later this month, Tate Britain will host its first Van Gogh exhibition since 1947. Here we’ve rounded up 4 of his best paintings before the show.
Potato Eaters
Potato Eaters was Van Gogh’s first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was one that he was most proud of. His aim was to represent the difficulties of country life, so the farmers are painted in earthy tones with rough faces and bony hands. He was more concerned with conveying his message than achieving technical perfection in this painting.
Irises
Van Gogh finished almost 142 pieces during his stay in the Saint Remy de Provence asylum (精神病院),where he was a voluntary patient from 1889 to 1890. This piece was started shortly after he arrived there. The hospital garden provided much inspiration for the artist during his stay there. Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment (色素) faded over time and has now turned blue.
Cafe Terrace at Night
Despite being painted more than 130 years ago, this cafe still exists in France and has since been renamed the Cafe Van Gogh. This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh’s famous post-impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground, in person, rather than from memory. While the artwork doesn’t bear his signature, it’s widely known to be Van Gogh’s, as he mentioned Cafe Terrace at Night in a number of his letters.
Wheat Field With Cypresses
This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh’s asylum window and was finished on the spot. The work was the title of three paintings that offer an insight into his stay at the hospital. Van Gogh was 80 pleased with the summer landscape that he made three copies there, one of the same size — which hangs in the National Gallery and two smaller copies which he planned to gift to his mother and sister.
1. Which painting did Vincent van Gogh take most pride in
A. Irises. B. Potato Eaters.
C. Cafe Terrace at Night. D. Wheat Field With Cypresses.
2. What is the original color of the flowers in Irises
A. Purple. B. Blue. C. Red. D. Yellow.
3. What do the last two paintings have in common

C. They were signed by the artist. D. They were painted on the ground.

I am Fionn Ferreira, an Irish teenager. I am very delighted to have won $50,000 for my project. My project came about as I was constantly hearing about plastic pollution on the news. And I also see the real effects on our beaches every day. I discovered, to my shock, that at present no filtration (过滤) for microplastics takes place in any European wastewater treatment centers, so I started looking for a solution.
Seeing that there was none, I decided to investigate further, finally finding a way to use the feerofluid (铁磁流体), a liquid which sticks to the plastic allowing it to be removed using magnets (磁铁). After over 1,000 tests I have proved that my method would remove 87% or higher of microplastics.
I grew up in West Cork, Ireland. My hometown is surrounded by untouched nature. This has been my primary inspiration about how nature works. I soon discovered that science really was in everything. The fact that I lived in such a remote place meant that I had to build my own equipment and lab to conduct tests and experiments.
Inspired by scientists such as Ben Feringa and his work with organic chemistry and nanotechnology (纳米技术), I would like to study chemistry or chemical engineering when finishing my last year of secondary school. Both of these subjects will be suited to me as I really enjoy problem-solving and experiments.
One of the most valuable rewards from the science fair for me is the opportunity to present my work to a group of professional judges. Winning the prize is a great honour to me as this is an acknowledgement of my project and ideas.
Also, winning the prize will give my project more attention. There is nothing I would like to see more than my project to be used in addressing microplastics in our oceans worldwide.
4. What do we know about Fionn
A. He lives by the sea. B. He discovered plastic pollution.
C. He works for a science fair. D. He was born in America.

C. Remove microplastics from water. D. Collect plastic wastes.
6. Which word can best describe Fionn

I remember that it was a fall morning when the orchestra (管弦乐队) teachers came into Miss Newell’s third-grade classroom. “You have hands for the viola (中提琴),” Miss Ciano told me. I was excited because my hands were finally good for something. I told my parents I wanted to play, and naturally, they agreed.
Since I first touched the viola, I haven’t been able to put it down. Ignoring the difficulty, I am pulled closer to it each day.
Classical music is truly my best friend. It is the trusted friend of every man, woman and child. Various feelings are expressed in classical music. I discovered that when I was eleven and played a cello concerto (大提琴协奏曲) of Bach in a competition, the first movement was joyful, but the second movement was mysterious and full of pain. From the piece, I learned that music expresses not only feelings, but also sudden mood changes. By listening to classical music, I know that someone else shares these feelings. Since I am lucky enough to be able to play classical music, I am comforted by it when I am upset. It gives me a way to escape from my problems for a short period. Classical music can express my joy, sadness and anger.
Now look back at that fall day in the third grade and think how gullible I was for believing that anyone, even music teachers, could tell whether hands were perfect for a certain instrument. I’m certain they told me I had “viola hands” not because they were fortune-tellers (算命师), but because there was a lack of violists in our district. Classical music is one of the best things that ever happened to mankind. If you get introduced to it in the right way, it will become your friend for life.

A. To introduce an interesting musical class. B. To offer the evidence of her gift for music.

A. Easily tricked. B. Firmly loved.

A British energy supplier has apologized for the “poorly judged and unhelpful” advice sent to customers which suggested they could snuggle (依偎) up to their pets and exercise to cut back on their heating bills.
SSE, which is owned by OVO Energy, suggested 10 “simple and cost effective ways to keep warm this winter,” according to the Financial Times. Eating bowls of oatmeal (燕麦粥), doing star jumps and cuddling (搂抱) pets were among the recommendations on the now-deleted web page.
In a statement sent to CNN Tuesday, a spokesperson for OVO Energy said, “Recently a link to a blog containing energy saving tips was sent to customers. We understand how difficult the situation will be for many of our customers this year.” The spokesperson added, “We are working hard to find meaningful solutions as we approach this energy crisis, and we recognize that the content of this blog was poorly judged and unhelpful. We are embarrassed and sincerely apologize.”
Some British businesses and households have seen their energy bills rise in recent months, as suppliers deal with a sharp rise in wholesale gas prices. British consumers will pay roughly £790 more to heat and light their homes this year, according to Bank of America. Wholesale European gas prices have jumped by 400% over the previous year and electricity prices have increased by 300%, the bank’s analysts said last week. The increases have been driven by cold weather, nuclear plant outages in France and reduced gas flow from Russia.
According to National Energy Action, more than 4 million UK households are facing fuel poverty — a figure which the charity believes could rise by 2 million in April when a cap (上限) on energy prices is expected to increase.
OVO Energy removed its advice after a wave of angry responses from lawmakers and campaigners. Following the apology, British lawmaker Darren Jones, who chairs Parliament’s business select committee, tweeted: “Good, I’m glad they apologized. I’m not sure who signed off a marketing campaign telling people to wear a jumper (针织套衫) and eat porridge instead of turning on the heating if you can’t afford it.”
5. Why did OVO Energy apologize for its advice on the ways of keeping warm sent to customers
A. The ways are too costly. B. The ways are too simple.
C. The suggestions are difficult. D. The suggestions are ineffective.
6. Which is the result of the energy crisis for British
A. Energy bills rise too sharply in winter for most UK households.
B. All customers can afford the increasing price of coal.
C. The British government has found meaningful methods to face it.
D. The energy crisis have been driven by cold weather.
7. How did Darren Jones feel about the apology in the last paragraph

For example, when Violet was painting, she would paint by her side. Every time, Violet looked at her angrily. Couldn’t she find her own thing to do This time, it was Tilly’s first week at gymnastics, while Violet had done gymnastics for the past two years.
Violet sat on the gym floor, waiting for her turn to do somersaults (翻筋斗). She frowned at her little sister across the room. Why couldn’t Tilly always find her own thing to do “Violet, you’re up!” called Violet’s instructor, Miss Taylor. Violet came over and pushed off with her legs and straightened her arms. She did one, two, three somersaults. Miss Taylor clapped. “Perfect!”
Violet noticed that Tilly had stepped away from the younger group to watch Violet’s somersaults. “Tilly!” called Tilly’s instructor, Miss Brooke, from across the room. Tilly didn’t seem to hear. Not until she was called three times did she run back to her group. “ Your turn to do somersaults. ” Miss Brooke put an arm around her. Tilly walked to the mat with her face turning red like a tomato. She bent down to start a somersault. When she rolled, she fell heavily on the mat. Kids laughed in surprise at the noise.
Tilly stood uncomfortably and then ran towards the restroom. She was gone from the gym, as Violet had wanted. But it didn’t feel right. After telling Miss Taylor where she was going, Violet hurried to the restroom. She found Tilly crying hard. Violet put an arm around her sister. Seeing Violet, Tilly cried even harder. Day Five
One Self-Appreciation
Ying pei’an
Frankly, I very much appreciate myself. Yes, I admit I’m in many respects not as good as other people, but I don’t think I’m always no good. When I find what I’ve done or written is okay, I’ll remain pleased with myself for quite a few days, and, in case I receive praise for it, I’ll even become so swollen-headed as to add a few words to glorify myself.
True, I’m not modest at all.
People may call me conceited. But I think otherwise.
I also appreciate other people. I appreciate anything good. Isn’t it unfair to forget appreciating myself while appreciating others
We Chinese are generally inclined to be modest, and we take pride in being so. For example, a Chinese will call his own wife zhuojing, meaning “my humble wife”, and his own writings zhuozuo, meaning “my poor writings”. But if you should call his wife a “rustic woman”or his writings “trash”, he would, I’m sure, slap the table in a rage and declare he would make a clean break with you. As a matter of fact, there is probably no difference at all between what is said by him and you respectively.
I don’t think it’s wrong for you to freely praise yourself if you’re really worthy of praise. As we know, there is an old Chinese saying disparaging a melon peddler, named Lao Wang, who keeps praising his own goods. Well, why can’t he praise his melons if they are really sweet and juicy
Friends, Lao Wang sells melons for a living. How could he carry on business if he, by imitating the affectations of us intellectuals, were to show false modesty about his melons He would sure enough die of starvation.
Self-appreciation is therefore key to professional dedication and enjoyment of work. One will lose confidence in continuing with writing when he ceases to admire his own essays.
Needless to say, the same is true of those who make a living with their pen.
Day One
1. travelling/traveling 考查状语从句的省略句。 故填travelling/traveling。
故填in。
be dressed in意为“穿着……”,此处用过去分词短语dressed in作后置定语,修饰名词a man。
故填his。
故填the。
故填what。
故填an。
故填have been included。
故填but。
故填more often。
7. who/that 考查定语从句。 故填who/that。
故填on。
分析句子可知,It在句中作形式主语;______ the country is a leading agricultural nation作真正的主语,故此处应填主语从句的连接词。 故填that。
故填what。
故填where。
故填how。
故填what。
故填that。

故填where。
故填whether。
故填where。
分析句子结构可知,________ women can work as well as men为同位语从句,解释fact这一抽象名词,且从句句意完整,成分齐全。 故填that。
但是that is because+原因,而that is why+结果,根据句意,“I began to learn about the Light-house Project”表示结果,why符合题意。故填why。
故填That。
故填What。
故填what。
故填That。
故填Whether。
故填how。

How to Protect the Environment
As we all know, June 5 is the World Environment Day. As high school students, we should contribute to environmental protection.
At present, tail gas pollution is very serious, and we’d better take public transport or ride a bike instead of driving. In addition, plastic pollution is also severe, and what we can help is to avoid buying plastic-bottled water. Finally, many places lack water. Therefore, when we don’t use tap water, we should turn off the tap immediately.
Take action now and we will have a great impact on the environment!
