It was November 2008 in Astoria, a small city in the western part of Oregon, USA. Don McLean, a60-year-old kind-hearted landlord(房东), had a tenant(租客) named Josiah, who was 50 years old and had come from a poverty-stricken family to seek work in Astoria.
When Josiah first moved in, he was clearly having a hard time making ends meet. Don noticed that Josiah was constantly worried and seemingly economical with every expense. He also saw that Josiah often ate very simple and insufficient meals. One day, when the rent was due, Josiah came to Don with a look of great embarrassment. He hesitated as he tried to explain that he didn't have the full $300. Don immediately realized the depth of Josiah' financial struggle. Without hesitation, he said to Josiah softly, “I know you're having a tough time. I'm going to reduce the rent to $100 per month. We all need a helping hand sometimes.” Josiah was extremely grateful and gave Don a great deal of thanks.
However, one year later, Josiah's wife fell il. Worried about her, he returned to his hometown, which was a four-hour walk from Astoria, Due to the long distance, his communication with Don became less frequent.
To pay for his wife's medical bills and medicine, Josiah spent all his savings. Despite working hard every day he still couldn't manage financially and led a very difficult life. But fortunately, his wife's condition gradually improved.
One day, Josiah happened to hear that Don was seriously ill and still in hospital. He knew that Don's son was working in the UK and couldn't return immediately, He only had his elderly wife by his side. Remembering how Don had helped him, Josiah made a firm decision: to visit Don. With only $13 in his pocket, Josiah chose to walk to Astoria to save money, After a tiring four-hour journey, he finally arrived.

两篇写作示范:
示范一: Feeling the gnawing hunger, Josiah clutched the thirteen dollars in his pocket. He knew every cent counted, but his body demanded sustenance. With a sigh, he decided on a frugal meal - apples from a nearby market for eleven dollars, keeping two for emergencies. Weary from the journey, he clutched the bag of apples, a symbol of his commitment to Don. Upon entering Don's hospital room, Josiah's heart swelled with a mix of relief and sorrow. Don's weakened state was a stark contrast to the robust man who had once shown him kindness. With a gentle smile, Josiah offered an apple, a simple gesture that spoke volumes about the depth of their bond.
示范二: Josiah's stomach rumbled as he fumbled with the thirteen dollars in his pocket. He knew he must conserve his funds, but the long walk had left him famished. Opting for the most economical choice, he purchased a bag of apples for eleven dollars, keeping the remaining two for any unforeseen needs. As he entered Don's hospital room, Josiah's spirit was heavy with concern. Don, once a pillar of strength, now lay frail and connected to tubes. Josiah's simple offering of an apple was a testament to his gratitude and the unbreakable bond they had forged. Their eyes met, and in that moment, the language of gratitude and compassion transcended words, binding them in a moment of shared humanity.
读后续写参考答案1
Feeling extremely hungry, Josiah reached out for his $13 in the pocket. How much he wanted to buy himself something to eat with those 13 dollars! But he remembered how Don had not hesitated to lower the rent when he was struggling, and he hoped to buy something, however small, to bring a bit of comfort to Don during his illness. Recalling that Don had once mentioned his fondness for apples, he knew what he should do. He used $11 to buy five apples, carefully selecting the freshest ones in the store. Then, with the remaining $2, he bought a simple sandwich for himself to quickly ease his hunger.
With the apples he spent $11 on, Josiah entered Don's hospital room. Don was lying in bed, looking pale and weak. Josiah walked over and said softly, “Don, I'm Josiah.” Don opened his eyes and was surprised, “Josiah, why are you here ” Don asked weakly. Josiah held Don's hand, saying, “You helped me when I was in trouble. Now it's my turn to be here for you. “Then, Don asked Josiah about his journey and the apples. Josiah had to tell him the truth. Hearing this, Don was deeply touched and said, “Josiah, you have so little but still think of me. I will never forget this gesture.”
读后续写参考答案2
Paragraph 1: Feeling extremely hungry, Josiah reached out for his $13 in the pocket. He knew he needed to save every penny for Don's recovery, but his stomach was growling from the long walk. He decided to spend a small portion of the money on something to eat. Josiah found a local market and bought a bag of apples for $11, keeping $2 for any unforeseen needs. The apples would have to suffice as his meal for the day. With the bag of apples in hand, he felt a mix of hunger and determination. He was determined to see Don, to express his gratitude in person, and to offer any support he could, no matter how small.
Paragraph 2: With the apples he spent $11 on, Josiah entered Don's hospital room. The room was quiet, with the soft beeping of medical equipment the only sound. Don looked frail, hooked up to an IV, but his eyes lit up when he saw Josiah. Despite his own hardships, Josiah's presence was a beacon of hope and kindness. He approached Don's bedside, offering him an apple with a warm smile. "I came as soon as I heard," Josiah said, his voice filled with concern. "I wanted to be here for you, just like you were there for me." Don's eyes welled up with tears, touched by Josiah's gesture. In that moment, the bond between them transcended their roles as landlord and tenant; they were friends, united by a mutual understanding of the power of compassion and the human spirit.
