When my husband passed away last year, my world turned upside down. Richard and I had been together for over forty years, and suddenly, there was an unbearable blank where he used to be. So, when my son, James, and his wife, Natalie, invited me to live with them for a while, I wasn’t about to refuse. I think being with the grandkids will be healing.
They welcomed me with open arms, making me feel like part of their daily life. They insisted that they wanted to help me through this difficult time and when I moved in, I only took the essentials. The rest of my things were locked 30 minutes away at my home, locking away the memories of a life shared with Richard.
From the beginning, there was simply one rule for the kids and myself: “Please, all three of you, stay out of the basement (地下室) ,” James had said when we were sitting for dinner, his tone was gentle but firm. “There are some repairs being done, and it’s really dusty and messy down there. We don’t want any of you to get sick or hurt. Understood ”
The boys, John, 6, and Eric, 4, nodded. I understood James’ concern, too. I agreed without giving it much thought. It wasn’t like I had any reason to go down there anyway.
Living with them was an adjustment. John and Eric were everything I needed to keep me distracted while my heart healed and grew with love for my grandchildren. We had also gotten into a new routine, where every evening, we’d gather in the living room for story time. Nothing delighted me more than watching their eyes light up as I read to them.
We’d been reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secretsfor a few days now, and it had quickly become a favorite for them. One evening, I turned to the next chapter, and as I read about Harry discovering the hidden entrance to the chamber, Eric suddenly piped up, “Grandma! We have a Chamber of Secrets too! In the basement!”

八、写作示范
第一篇
I paused, glancing down at him unbelievably. My heart pounded in my chest as I wrestled with the decision. The rule had been clear, but the boys' excitement was infectious. After a moment's hesitation, I gave in to my curiosity. "Alright, boys," I said, trying to sound calm, "but just a quick peek." With that, we tiptoed towards the basement door. The closer we got, the more my palms sweated. What could possibly be down there As we reached the door, I took a deep breath and turned the knob. It creaked open, revealing a dimly lit staircase.
The room was a perfect copy of my own bedroom back home. I stood there, dumbfounded, my eyes scanning every familiar object. There were the old quilts Richard and I had used, draped neatly over the bed. The pictures on the wall were ones I had taken down when packing. Tears streamed down my face as I realized what James and Natalie had done. The boys watched me, wide-eyed, not fully understanding my reaction. Just then, we heard the front door open. James and Natalie walked in, saw us, and exchanged knowing smiles. "Surprise, Mom," James said softly. In that moment, the love in the room filled every corner, chasing away the last remnants of my grief.
第二篇
I paused, glancing down at him unbelievably. My mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. Could it be true But the rule... I looked at the eager faces of the boys and felt my resolve crumbling. "Okay, but we must be careful," I whispered. We made our way quietly, my heart in my throat. As we approached the basement door, I could hear my own breathing, so loud in the silence. I pushed the door open slowly, half-expecting a mess as promised. Instead, a soft glow greeted us.
The room was a perfect copy of my own bedroom back home. It was like stepping back in time. The antique dresser that Richard had refinished was there, along with my favorite reading chair. Memories flooded back, and I sank onto the chair, overcome. The boys hopped around, excited to have shown me their discovery. Soon, Natalie and James came down. "We wanted you to have a piece of your old home here, Mom," Natalie said, hugging me. This basement, once forbidden, had now become a bridge connecting my past happiness with my new life, all thanks to the love of my family.
One possible version:
I paused, glancing down at him unbelievably. Eric said he would show it to me. Before I could stop him, he jumped off the couch and grabbed my hand, tugging me toward the basement door. I called that we were not supposed to be going down there. “There it is!” Eric exclaimed, pointing toward a door hidden behind a large sheet of plastic. I was curious and reached for the door handle. The door swung open with a soft creak, revealing a room that took my breath away.
The room was a perfect copy of my own bedroom back home. The familiar wallpaper and the same pattern of the bed were identical. But what truly made my heart sing was the photograph: Richard and I on our wedding day, smiling and young, full of life. I stepped backward, tears streaming down my face as a thousand memories flooded back. James and Natalie rushed down the stairs, followed by John. James explained softly that they wanted to surprise me and didn’t want me to go back to my old house. They wanted me to have a space here that felt like home. I hugged them and said in tears that I wanted them, too.
