While kids are enjoying some time off from school this summer, it is also important to keep their minds active. Parents can help their kids avoid the terrible “summer slide”, where students lose some of their academic gains from the school year, by encouraging their children to participate in TurfMutt’s environmental education and stewardship(管理) program.
About the Lessons
The TurfMutt youth education lesson plans are free and suitable for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math(STEM) standards for kids in grades K-8. The lessons are available on the TurfMutt website and in the USGBC Learning Lab. They are designed as a fun and engaging way for students to learn valuable science lessons in their own backyards, parks or school yards.
The lessons focus on getting kids outside to conduct interactive experiments and other fun activities. The lesson plans help kids learn how to care for the green space around us so they can learn early on how to take care of the environment and why that is so important.
The arts are included in the lessons as well. One of the plans provides an original drama script, where students can act out parts for flowers, sun trees and environmental villains(反面人物), such as Carbon Creep. By putting on the play as a class activity or for others, students can learn how green plants, trees and bushes help our communities.
* The TurfMutt lesson plans are free on the TurfMutt website and are available through subscription from the USGBC Learning Lab. Prior TurfMutt lesson plans are also housed on the TurfMutt website.

Tait’s journey to being a baking kid began back in2018 when, aged 14, she was struck down by mental illness. With medication and therapy(疗法), and under the guidance of parents, Tait began exploring activities that might help her find a path through the daily anxiety attacks and depression. Gardening, drawing, knitting were among the things she tried. But nothing quite seemed to last long enough or give her a sense of hope or delight.
A turning point came when his father Alex clipped a simple bread recipe from a magazine. When he read it, Tait felt excited and got stuck in. The effect was nothing short of magic.
“Baking filled my time and put me in a really calm state, but it also gave me a huge sense of purpose when all I really felt like was a burden,” she says.
Tait’s newfound zeal rapidly capped her family’s appetite for bread, so she began gifting her bread to lucky locals in her home town. Word quickly spread and the free bread turned into a paid-for subscription service. Alex quit his job as a tutor to become his daughter’s business partner, and after opening several successful pop-up stores(快闪店), the pair drew on their global social media following to crowd fund a brick-and-mortar store in 2019.
It was an instant success, selling out daily and she wrote a book. However, ensuring long-term viability(生存能力) would have meant scaling up in a way that neither father nor daughter liked. So instead, after four years of 5 am starts and 12- hour days, they shut up shop last summer.
Tait has since scaled back to basics, selling her bakes at twice-weekly pop-up store. She runs the Orange Bakery from a Watlington’s abandoned factory, which is also the center for Breaducating Britain. So far they have distributed around 40,000 free bread kits through more than 200 different organisations to schools, prisons and individuals.

Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that an Aboriginal ritual(仪式) may have been passed down 500 generations and survived 12,000 years, making it the oldest known continuous cultural practice in the world.
While investigating Cloggs Cave in Australia, researchers found a piece of wood sticking out of the ground. They cut it, and used carbon dating to determine that it’s about 12,000 years old. “12,000-year-old artifacts don’t survive in the ground for that long. Normally they just break down,” said Bruno David, a professor at Monash
University in Australia.
They also uncovered another wooden stick which, though 1,000 years younger, was remarkably similar. Both sticks were spread with animal or human fat, found next to small fireplaces, and both had been fleetingly burnt.
David and his colleagues were approached in2017 by the GunaiKurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation(GLaWAC), which represents the GunaiKurnai people, to investigate the archaeological evidence of this ritual, which had previously been documented by the 19th- century geologist Alfred Howitt.
Howitt detailed this ritual in his book. He wrote that the ritual would seek to help the sick people recover quickly by finding something belonging to the subject, attaching it to a throwing stick along with animal fat. The stick was then stuck in the ground before a fire, and it is placed in such a position that by-and-by it falls down.
Excavations(挖掘) that took place 50 years ago without consulting the GunaiKurnai people uncovered the small fireplaces around which these rituals centered, but researchers didn’t analyze the wooden sticks in any significant detail.
As well as dating and determining the use of these sticks, archaeologists also concluded that the caves were used almost specifically as a ritual site. This finding matches with the current GunaiKurnai knowledge. “Nowhere else on Earth has archaeological evidence of a very specific cultural practice whose performance is known from elders and has previously been tracked so far back in time,” said David.
28. How did Bruno David feel when mentioning the finding
A. Doubtful. B. Surprised.
C. Confident. D. Satisfied.
29. Why did David and his colleagues investigate Cloggs Cave
A. To find evidence of a documented ritual.
B. To prove the wisdom of Aboriginal people.
C. To determine the age of an ethnic minority.
D. To uncover the secret of some buried sticks.
30. What do we know about the ritual from the text
A. It was carried out around after a big fire.
B. It was performed to heal the sick people.
C. It was forgotten by the GunaiKurnai people.
D. It regained public attention in the 20th century.
31. What is a suitable title for the text
A. World’s Oldest Ritual Dates So Far back in Time
B. Some Sticks Determine the Rich Cultural Practice
C. Scientists Have Proved Howitt’s Description of a Ritual
D. Archaeologists Try to Determine the Use of Some Sticks

The pollutants in the sky cause ugly stains on buildings. To beat this, chemists have been working for years on a paint that can clean itself and remove pollutants from the air.
This technology uses nanoparticles(纳米颗粒) that start chemical reactions. When an artificial UV(紫外线) light source shines on the paint, the nanoparticles react with pollutants to break them down, removing them from nearby panies already offer these photocatalytic(光催化的) paints, but some chemists remain cautious about the products’ effectiveness and sustainability.
For a recent study, researchers created a new photocatalytic paint using UV rays from ordinary sunlight, making its self-cleaning properties easier to activate. They’ve also shown they can effectively produce this paint from recycled materials from industry and also using fallen leaves, which are organic waste.
UV light excites the electrons in the nanoparticles, which interact with water in the air to produce highly reactive chemicals which attack pollutants coming in contact with the paint, changing them into less harmful substances such as water. The research team added nitrogen, carbon and other elements to the nanoparticles’ structure, which reduced the amount of energy needed to perform the reaction and let it work via ordinary sunlight. In laboratory tests, these improved nanoparticles removed up to 96% of tested pollutants added to the paint’s surface.
“It is better to be able to use solar light to activate, as the paint can work by itself,” says Antonio, a chemist in Spain. But a real-world setting would probably reduce its effectiveness, he adds. “Under laboratory conditions, it is a small scale, and everything is controlled, such as temperature, humidity, or the concentration of pollutants, but you’ll never get those results at a real scale.”
The study authors stress that this work is just an initial step in their research. Future research will confirm how effectively pollutants are removed. “We don’t claim that we can remove all pollutants from the air,” Antonio says, “but it looks promising.”
32. What makes some chemists doubtful about the photocatalytic paints
A. How the UV light can be produced. B. When the chemical reactions set off.
C. Whether the products are sustainable. D. What they can do to remove the dirt.
33. What’s the purpose of adding nitrogen into the nanoparticles
A. To reduce the energy needed for the reaction.
B. To make them less harmful to the environment.
C. To get more pollutants in contact with the paint.
D. To test solar light as a motivator on a large scale.
34. How does Antonio evaluate the research
A. It’s a big step to clean stains on buildings.
B. It should be performed in various conditions.
C. It offers a way to remove outdoor pollutants.
D. It should focus on the recycling of the paints.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. New paint has been proved green. B. Green paint makes walls beautiful.
C. Sun-activated paint cleans walls. D. Ways are found to improve air quality.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Whether it’s woodworking, sewing or sculpting teeny cupcakes, making art is good for your mind and body. 36 And developing our creative side can give us a stronger sense of agency— the ability to solve problems by imagining possible solutions.
But you don’t have to be a full-time artist to get in on those health benefits. All you need to do is just make art. And the more you do it, the better. 37
You don’t need to be an artist with a capital “A”.
We tend to think that only people who are very skilled at art can call themselves artists, but really, anyone can be an artist. 38 In fact, research has shown that there are no differences in health outcomes between those who identify as experienced artists and those who don’t. That means that no matter your skill level, you’ll be able to feel all the good things that come with making art.
Figure out your mode of creative expression.
Start with whatever you enjoy. But keep an open mind. 39 You can do that through many activities: finger painting, cooking, baking, oil painting, weaving — the sky’s the limit. And don’t feel like you have to stick to one thing. Mix it up— do whatever you’re in the mood for.
40
Once you have your art materials, here comes the fun part. Mess around! Let yourself get lost in the process and just play. Because it’s the physical act of making art that induces those feelings of stress relief and positive energy — not what you make or how you make it.
A. Be ready to take others’ advice.
B. Take control of the waves of emotion.
C. Everyone is capable of creative expression.
D. Focus on the making and let go of expectations.
E. Anything that engages your creative mind is good for you.
F. The act of creation can reduce stress and anxiety and improve your mood.
G. Here are several things you need to know to kick-start your creative art habit.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Did you write your thank-you notes ” I asked my son, Jon. “Not yet, Mom,” Jon replied, rolling his eyes. “I’ll do it when I get back from Jim’s house.”
“Sorry, that’s not going to happen!” I snapped. “You’re not leaving this house until you’ve written a note to everyone you came in contact with during your interview.” “Even the receptionist who was rude to me ” Jon asked with a puzzled expression. “Especially her,” I said.
Jon had just finished interviewing with his first- choice company. It was a rare opportunity considering that jobs were in short supply. After an hour, Jon came out of his room and handed over eight thank-you notes. To my delight, they were all sincere and heartfelt — even the one to the receptionist who had been less friendly.
Before Jon left to visit his friend, he turned to me and announced, “Mom, I’m pretty sure that a thank-you note to the CEO or the receptionist isn’t going to land me this job. But if it makes you happy, then it’s worth it.” Jon was twenty-one years old, and I felt foolish telling a grown man what to do, but I also didn’t want him living in our basement for the rest of his life!
Ten days after the thank-you notes were mailed, Jon received a call from the company that he had interviewed with. When his cellphone rang for the second time, I asked, “Jon, why don’t you want to answer a phone call ” “Oh, they’re just calling to let me know that I didn’t get the job,” Jon said sadly. “I’m sorry to disappoint you, but they only give you a call when you get the job.” I explained.
For days, Jon had been worried that his school loans would be due after graduation and that he didn’t have a job lined up. He had thoroughly convinced himself that he didn’t get the job, but I knew better. Jon hesitated to answer the cellphone. But after my efforts, Jon finally gave in and went into the next room to make the call.

Text 1
M: Hey, Sarah. Your uncle told me you were hurt yesterday. Is that true
W: No, Matt. I went snowboarding yesterday and my whole body ached. And I never want to go again.
M: Don’t worry too much about it. You’ll feel the fun of snowboarding after some practice.
Text 2
M: Kitty, that’s a great kite. Did you make it by yourself
W: No, my elder brother made it for me.
M: My father had promised to make one for me but he was always busy. My mother said I couldn’t depend on him.
Text 3
W: Congratulations! Before you bring the car home, you have a few papers to sign up, and remember to put air in your tires once every two months.
M: That’s six times a year, and it takes about five minutes each time. Anyhow, I’ll try, since running on a flat tyre is as dangerous as drunk driving.
Text 4
W: Did you get the invitation to my party, Robert
M: The invitation came in the mail yesterday. Unfortunately, I can’t go to your party. My uncle is visiting that day. The next party you have, I promise I will be there.
W: What if your uncle visits again
M: Thankfully, he only comes once a year.
Text 5
W: I feel that my present major Biology Technology isn’t challenging enough. I’m applying to change to Life Science.
M: They both sound tough for me. I’m just content with my Automation Science major. When are you going to
start applying
W: Next month.
Text 6
W: Dad, I got a ticket at school the other day for parking my favorite car in the wrong place.
M: Well, you should pay for it as soon as possible, or you’ll be fined, and perhaps you’ll have to attend the driving classes for a lecture.
W: Can I pay for it online
M: Yes. Look at the ticket. It should have a website on it.
W: Oh, let me get the ticket. It’s in my car.
M: Hurry, because I need to leave to work.
W: Oh, wait. I forgot I put it in my wallet. Yes, the website is in the back.
M: You can also pay in person at the traffic police station near your school library.
W: Thanks, Dad. I’ll pay online with my credit card.
Text 7
M: I’m full already. This is an excellent meal. Don’t you think so, Judy
W: Absolutely! I especially like the dessert.
M: Yes, me too. The fillings in the cake are deliciously juicy, not the usual spicy cake we taste.
W: Here comes our waitress for the bill. Her service and attitude are also good. How much are you tipping her
M: You’re right about the service. I think 20 percent.
W: Twenty percent That’s a bit high, isn’t it
M: I know, but the food is good, and the service is excellent.
W: You’re right, dear. She deserves it. So we’ll pay extra four dollars as the tips for her.
Text 8
W: I forgot to register for this term’s classes this June, and now the classes are mostly full. What do you think I should do, Mike
M: You can’t do anything but hope that you get some useful classes.
W: What classes do you think are still open
M: Well, I know Introduction to AI 101 is a big class, so there will always be seats in that class. You can also get into Sociology.
W: That’s helpful. Thanks. But what do you think about Philosophy I wanted to take that class this semester.
M: I took that class last year. Professor Smith teaches the course. He’s really cool, so if you go to his office, you can have him sign a card that will let you in even if the class is full, because so many people drop out of that class.
W: That makes sense. I think I’ll do that. Thanks for all the help.
Text 9
M: Hi, Julie. How have things been going for you
W: I’m good, Ted. How are things with you
M: Things couldn’t be better right now.
W: Let’s go and check out the party food. There’s quite a lot of good food spread over on the food table!
M: Julie, who is the woman talking with Lee on the sofa
W: Someone told me her name is Mary. She and Lee are good partners in charge of the same department of the company in the center of the street.
M: Have you heard about Malia lately
W: Malia is no longer in our company. She moved to Australia to open up a new business with her husband Thomas last month.
M: How has Thomas’s business been going Pretty well, I hope.
W: Not much is known about that. I think that he has a talent for doing business.

One possible version:
Good study habits are very important to our academic success and personal growth.
As to my study habits, I often make a detailed study plan at the beginning of each week. This helps me organize my tasks and time appropriately. I also make it a point to review and summarize what I’ve learned every day. Additionally, I don’t hesitate to ask questions or discuss with classmates and teachers.
To form good study habits, we should set clear goals and establish a regular study schedule and stick to it. Moreover, consistency and self- discipline are the keys to nurturing and maintaining these habits.

There was a long pause, and then Jon cleared his throat and added, “Yes, I look forward to receiving the welcome packet in the mail, and thank you again for this opportunity.” I tried to pretend like I hadn’t heard, but I was not that good of an actress. I grabbed Jon’s arm, and we danced around the kitchen happily.
I asked Jon the reason why he got the job with a smile. Even if he was so excited and satisfied, he hesitated for a moment and replied cheerfully, “Thanks, mom. I must owe it to the thank-you note. Obviously, the best thank-you note makes a difference.” Jon got it. Actually, I got my first job by writing a thank-you note to everyone I met during the interview. And I’m sure that, one day, Jon will be sharing the power of a thank-you note with his children.
