A Nigerian mom found out the hard way that jaundice(黄疸) is still a dangerous disease in Africa— but now she's putting an end to the disease with her new tech startup, making cribs(婴儿床).
Virtue Oboro's son, Tombra, was just 48 hours old when he had to be rushed to the NICU, suffering from jaundice, which causes yellow skin and can lead to permanent damage or even death. The treatment is fairly simple and widespread in developing countries: blue-light phototherapy (光疗).
Virtue's hospital had no phototherapy devices, so Tombra had to receive a risky emergency blood transfusion(输血). Her son made a full recovery, but Virtue was changed by the experience. “I felt like some of the things I experienced could have been avoided,” the visual designer said. “I thought, is there something I could do to make the pain less for the babies and the mothers ”
What could a visual designer do She designed the Crib A' Glow and named her new company Tiny Hearts. The mobile phototherapy unit is powered by the African sun, and costs one-sixth the price of a normal phototherapy crib---and is produced in her homeland of Nigeria. Virtue's husband had some experience working with solar panels before, so he lent a hand to the visual designer. who was busy sailing in the unknown waters of a new profession. She worked with a baby doctor through the design process to ensure all the details would benefit the tiny babies.
The Crib A` Glow can now be found in 500 hospitals across Nigeria and neighboring Ghana. It has been used on 300,000 babies already. Childhood experiences in physical education(PE) classes may have long-term effects on adult physical activity, a study suggests.
Researchers conducted an online survey of more than 1,000 adults, ages 18 to 45, across 46 states about their best and worst memories of PE experiences, as well as their attitude toward physical activity now. People's gym-class memories “had some degree of influence on their self-perception and the degree of their sedentariness(久坐),” said lead author Panteleimon Ekkekakis.
“Memories of enjoyment of PE were the most substantial correlates of present-day intentions for physical activity,” Ekkekakis reported. In contrast, rarely being chosen first for team sports in gym classes was “strongly related to the amount of time spent sitting on weekdays and on the weekend” in adulthood.
However, Ekkekakis stressed, the association was “temperate at best”. “We are not saying that one negative experience is going to determine a person's physical activity level for the rest of their life.” he said.
Christopher Hersl, vice president of programs and professional development at the Society of Health and Physical Educators(SHAPE America), stated, “Our number one goal is to turn out children that are healthy, happy and productive. If our instructional practices are causing any of these things not to happen then we need to reconsider our practices.”
Carolyn Buenaflor, associate director of Healthy Habits at Cedars-Sinai, held that children today might not have the same PE experiences as their parents did. “Many of the elimination games(淘汰赛) children used to play in gym classes have been replaced with non-elimination games. PE classes also play more group games than sports games where one student at a time shined or did not. Getting in front of the class and kicking the ball is not the best thing to enhance enjoyment and physical exercise,” said Buenaflor.
Still, he pointed out, “if improvements in PE experiences could inspire even small increases in physical activity, millions could gain additional health benefits.”
28. What might lead adults to actively join in physical activities
A. The high frequency of PE classes in childhood.
B. The sweet memories of PE classes in childhood.
C. The rich variety of PE experiences during childhood.
D. The engaging nature of childhood PE activities.
29. What does the underlined word “temperate” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Long-term. B. In-depth. C. Limited. D. Expected
30. What is the primary aim of PE classes in Hersl's eyes
A. To ensure positive development of the children.
B. To promote children's team spirit.
C. To improve instructional practices.
D. To boost children's academic performance.
31. What can we infer from Buenaflor's words
A. Children like games that allow them to shine.
B. Elimination games are crucial for PE stars.
C. Group games are less popular than individual sports.
D. PE classes today can arouse children's interest in sports.
D
On one hike on Australia's Lord Howe Island, K. C. Burns, a biologist at Victoria University of Wellington, came across a group of staghorn ferns(鹿角殿). They are common potted plants, but in nature they grow in thick colonies(群落) that stick to treetops. In the volcanic island's undergrown forest, those treetops are right at eye level.
Dr. Burns looked closer and realized the plants within the colony were doing different jobs to survive. Ferns growing higher up had long thin leaves that seemed to direct rainwater into the colony's centre. Farther down, ferns grew leaves that were damp to the touch. Some plants weren't reproducing at all--- they seemed to have devoted their lives to collecting water for their neighbours' roots. It struck Dr. Burns that the ferns were working together as a kind of super-organism. perhaps like bees that live in colonies.
To measure how ferns cooperated, Dr. Burns and his team sampled plants growing at different heights within 24 colonies. They counted two types of leaves on each plant. One type, which they called nest leaves, is rounded and mostly brown, hugging the tree like cupped hands. Other leaves, green and forked, can grow spores(芽孢) on their undersides that will become the next generation of ferns. They found that nest leaves from the bottom of a colony were more absorbent. Since the colony's roots grew in a network, these leaves might help the whole colony keep water.
Plants are some of the most flexible living things on Earth, said Karen Kapheim, a biologist who studies the social behavior of bees. Maybe it's not surprising that a fern could also develop social tendencies, she said. Science is revealing more and more about how plants behave and communicate, Dr. Kapheim said. “I think adding social behaviour to that fits in with this new, emerging understanding of plants.”
32. What did Dr. Burns find about staghorn ferns
A. They grew slowly on volcanic islands.
B. They had a clear division of labour.
C. They could hardly survive in nature.
D. They competed severely for resources.
33. What role do forked leaves play
A. Directing rainwater. B. Hugging trees. C. Water-keeping. D. Reproducing.
34. What does Dr. Kapheim imply in the last paragraph
A. Plants are inflexible compared to other living things.
B. Ferns' social behaviour is in line with new insights into plants.
C. Scientists lack comprehensive knowledge of plant behaviour.
D. Ferns' social tendencies contradict general knowledge about plants.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Staghorn ferns: a popular potted plant B. Fern colonies: survival of the fittest
C. These plants work together as bees do D. These plants show the diversity of the forest

The AGES Model of learning enables people to learn quickly, and keep information for the long term. It focuses on four key elements: Attention, Generation, Emotion, and Spacing. Here's what it's all about.
Attention
Learning takes place when we activate a brain region known as the hippocampus. This occurs when we focus on one topic, without distractions. 36 , we' re likely to deactivate the hippocampus and reduce how much learning takes place. In short, attention matters because it's how our brain knows what we' re trying to learn in the first place.
Generation
37 . Research shows we can't just absorb information passively, we must take an active, creative role. This stems from(源于) how the brain stores memory, as the hippocampus acts more like a web. The thicker the web of memories, the stronger each individual memory becomes.
As learners, we help strengthen that web when we actively create-or generate-those connections.38 .
Emotion
Emotions play a double role in learning. 39 . And second, emotions activate a brain region called the amygdala, which seems to remind the hippocampus that the material is important and worth encoding(编码) as memory.
Spacing
Scientists have long found that the brain really creates long-term memories through a spacing approach. Therefore, it's better to introduce concepts at a stable rate and wait some time before recalling that information.
Of course, researchers can't say whether we should space lessons by an hour or a week, but they do agree that some spacing is always better than no spacing. 40 .
A. When we multi-task or let our minds wander
B. If we can keep ourselves from all kinds of distractions
C. The second component involves how we engage with the material
D. First, they've been found to increase our attention to a given topic
E. First, positive learning emotions include interest, curiosity, wonder and joy
F. How often you space may be more of a practical matter within your organization
G. One way to do that is by relating the new material to our existing web of knowledge
