The Answer Is In the Trees
Dave Meko, a scientist at the University of Arizona, noticed that from 1999 to the following years it became drier and drier. And water levels in the huge Colorado River were dropping rapidly. This was the b 51 of a serious drought (干旱). Everyone began asking, “How long will it last ” Meko believed that he could find the answer in the trees.
Meko is a tree-ring expert. He studies the rings within a tree to find information about climate change. Each year, a tree adds a new layer of wood. These layers look like a series of rings. During times of h 52 rainfall, a ring is wide. When there is a shortage of water, a ring is narrow. These rings are nature’s record of rainfall and climate change.
Meko and his team quickly started a new research project. Their goal was to find out how long previous droughts lasted. The team collected as many old wood samples as possible. They tested wood samples from 1,200 years ago until the p 53 . When they examined the rings, the news about rainfall in the past was not good.
Meko’s research showed that, the 20th century was an unusually wet time. Trees from this period had wide, healthy rings. Rain was plentiful d 54 that century, millions of people moved to the region. Before that time, however, the rings showed that droughts occurred on a regular basis. In fact, drought was part of the usual climate pattern. There were severe droughts in the 900s, the 1100s, and the late 1200s.
Human history seems to s 55 Meko’s findings. The native Anasazi lived in this area for hundreds of years, starting around 500 AD.They were farmers and depended on water to grow their crops. However, at the end of the 13th century, the Anasazi s 56 left the area. Experts do not know exactly why the Anasazi left. They think it was because there was no longer enough water to farm. And Meko’s tree rings clearly show a serious drought at that time.
How long will the current drought last Using nature’s c 57 from the past, experts predict that this drought may continue for another 50 years.

How can you find your voice
Dr. Gray suggests talking with friends or parents on the way home from school. “If it’s difficult for you to express yourself, find a way that is r 57 for you, whether it’s talking face-to-face or writing it down. When you’re ready, take a deep breath and believe in yourself,”says Dr. Gray.

Dr. Gray is a psychologist (心理学家) at Place2Be. She says it means “Sharing your views, thoughts and feelings and being open to hearing the thoughts, feelings and views of others too.” Making yourself heard isn’t about shouting the loudest; In fact, you don’t have to use your voice at all. “You can express what you like, don’t like or what you want by writing or d 54 instead”, says Dr. Gray. “It’s about finding ways to share what matters to you,” she explains.
Why is “My Voice Matters” i 55
Sharing your feelings with a person you trust will help you understand yourself better. Scientists have discovered that sharing your feelings causes a chemical in your brain that makes you feel relaxed. Meanwhile, your voice can make a big difference to others, too. Dr. Gray says, “You can show your feelings d 56 by speaking face-to-face. With a few kind words, you could help others feel good about themselves or let them know they are supported.”
Gray.

根据后文“The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me”及首字母可知,作者是第二个到达现场的志愿者,second“第二”符合题意。故填(s)econd。
根据“The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was standing outside at midnight, in the pouring rain and under an umbrella, barefoot, while her house was on fire”及首字母可知,是经历了她一生中最糟糕的一天。
根据“who were almost done putting out the fire at this point”及首字母可知,是消防员,firefighter“消防员”,可数名词,空前无限定词,所以应填名词复数形式。故填(f)irefighters。
根据前文“but I went up the stairs”及首字母可知,是下楼,downstairs“顺楼梯而下”,符合题意。故填(d)ownstairs。
根据“much more attention than mine”及首字母可知,是收到关注,receive attention“受到关注”,结合前句中的took可知,该句为一般过去时,所以动词用过去式received。故填(r)eceived。
根据“someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes”及首字母可知,此处指善举,kindness“善举”,此处特指“有人甚至给她买了一双鞋”这一善举,所以用名词单数形式。故填(k)indness。
根据“but every day offers us a chance to…one”及首字母可知,此处指影响,affect“影响”,动词。 故填(a)ffect。
