I sold one of my cars and switched to an e-bike one year ago. I knew that I was doing something good for the planet. But I still viewed giving up my car as something reserved for the deeply committed and adventurous, something that Greenpeace volunteers did to make the world better. However, I live in Colorado; e-bike would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not going to be fun.
I was very wrong. Before selling my car, I worried most about riding in the cold winter months. But I quickly learned that, as the saying goes, there is no bad weather, only bad clothes. I wear gloves, warm socks and a ski jacket when I ride, and I am almost never too cold.
Though I, like many would-be cyclists, was worried about arriving at the office sweaty in hotter months, the e-bike solved my problem. Even when there was 35 degrees Celsius outside, I didn’t sweat, thanks to my bike’s pedal-assist mode (脚踏辅助模式). If I am honest, sometimes I didn’t even pedal; I just switched to pedal-assist mode, sat back and enjoyed my ride.
But biking to work wasn’t just not unpleasant — it was entirely enjoyable. One day, shortly after selling our car, I hopped on (跳上) my bike after a stressful day at work and rode home down a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass. I have to say, this sensation made me happier and healthier.
Of course, e-bikes aren’t going to replace every car on every trip. In a country where uncontrolled stretching of suburbs and malls and unprotected bike paths are the norm, it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars in the way that the Model T (福特公司第一款大规模生产的汽车) replaced horses. But as an individual, making short trips on an e-bike would save money, cut carbon footprints, and improve health and well-being.
24. What did the author originally think of letting go of his car
A. A healthy move.
B. A difficult choice.
C. A call of duty.
D. A crowd-driven decision.
25. How did the author feel about the actual experience of riding to work
A. Confused. B. Embarrassed.
C. Anxious. D. Amazed.
26. What does the underlined part “this sensation” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Interest in exploring new routes.
B. Desire to head home faster.
C. Relief from work pressure.
D. Love for exposure to nature.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. E-bike will replace cars very soon.
B. Cyclists should do more to protect themselves.
C. Cities need a more inclusive transport network.
D. The Model T will be back quickly.
C
Solar stills (蒸馏器) provide a clever and simple means of cleaning dirty or salty water, but they work at a rather slow rate. A new material has been shown to boost their performance, and it's made from fruit waste which would otherwise be thrown away.
In its most basic form, a conventional solar still contains undrinkable water that is set beneath a cover. The water evaporates (蒸发) as it’s heated by the sun, condensing (凝结) on the inside surface of the cover. That condensation — which is pure, clean water — drops down the cover and is collected in a separate container for drinking.
In order to warm the dirty salty water at a faster rate, scientists have developed materials that float on its surface, turning sunlight into heat. And while those materials have been made from a number of different substances, they commonly use carbon obtained from coal. Seeking a less costly and more eco-friendly alternative, Prof. Edison and colleagues at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University looked to something that does’t have to be mined and is free for the taking — fruit waste. More specifically, the scientists tried out coconut peels, orange peels and banana peels.
In the process, the fruit waste was heated at 850℃ for a few hours, and mixed with a kind of chemical substance. Doing so transformed the fruit waste into a new material which has a very high light-to-heat transforming efficiency.
When tested, this new material proved to be very potent at transforming sunlight into heat then. And because the material is full of holes, the water steam is able to rise right through it, then condensing on the inside of the still's cover.
Prof. Edison and his team found material obtained from the coconut peels worked best, as it transformed sunlight to heat with an efficiency rate of 94%. They are now developing the technology further, and are seeking industry partners to help with its commercialization.
28. What is the paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The basic working principle of solar stills.
B. The advantages of conventional solar stills.
C. The new materials of building a solar still.
D. The different ways of cleaning dirty water.
29. Why did Prof. Edison and his colleagues try out fruit waste as an alternative
A. To solve the problem of environmental pollution.
B. To find out more eco-friendly materials.
C. To expand the applied range of the solar still.
D. To make solar stills much easier and less costly.
30. What does the underlined word “potent” mean in paragraph 5
A. Convincing. B. Representative. C. Effective. D. Durable.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. Transforming sunlight into heat through high-tech
B. Turning fruit waste into water-cleaning material
C. Solar stills are the best way to get drinking water
D. New technology helps solar stills reach the customers
D
In a global report of lake color, researchers estimate that roughly one-third of Earth’s lakes are blue. But, should average summer air temperatures rise by a few degrees, some of those clear waters could turn a cloudy green or brown, the Learn reports in the Sept. 28 Geophysical Research Letters.
The changing colors could change how people use those waters and offer clues about the stability of lake pared with blue lakes, green or brown lakes have more algae (藻类) and organic matter, says Xiao Yang, a hydrologist (水文专家) at Southern Methodist University.
Lakes in places with average summer air temperatures that were below 19° Celsius were more likely to be blue than lakes with warmer summers. That’s because warmer water helps algae bloom more, which changes the properties of the water.
Yang and colleagues used satellite photos from 2013 to 2020 to analyze the color of more than 85,000 lakes around the world. Because storms and seasons can temporarily affect a lake’s color, the researchers focused on the most frequent color observed for each lake over the seven-year period. The researchers also created an interactive online map that can be used to explore the colors of these lakes. The approach is “super cool,” the researchers say. These satellite data are “just so powerful.”
If some lakes do become less blue, people will probably lose some of the resources they have come to value, O’Reilly says, who is an ecologist at Illinois State University. Lakes are often used for drinking water, food or recreation. If the water has more algae, it could be unappealing for play or more costly to clean for drinking. But the color changes wouldn’t necessarily mean that the lakes are any less healthy. “Humans don’t value lots of algae in a lake, but if you’re a certain type of fish species, you might be like ‘this is great’ O’Reilly says.
32. What can we learn about the lakes’ color change according to the text
A. It is caused by water pollution.
B. It does harm to the growth of algae.
C. It results from the temperature increase.
D. It can disturb the stability of lake ecosystems.
33. How was the research conducted
A. By doing field investigation.
B. By researching previous studies.
C. By analyzing long-term satellite data.
D. By observing the daily color of the lakes.
34. Which word best describes O’Reilly’s attitude to the color change
A. Objective. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Favourable.
35. What’s the authors purpose in writing the text
A. To call on people to protect lakes.
B. To introduce a new research method.
C. To present the outcome of a research.
D. To provide solutions to lakes’ color change.

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night with unhappy thoughts in your head Maybe you argued with your friend and remember everything about the argument. Perhaps you can’t stop worrying about all the things that could go wrong in an upcoming job interview. 36 That’s how we humans find out how to navigate (导航) our lives.
However, sometimes this navigation system goes out of control. Repetitive thinking can make it hard to see reality as it is, keeping us locked into bad thinking patterns(模式) that don’t work on us. 37 We may lose sleep, have less attention, or feel unhappy. What can we do instead Manage our thoughts by using the following ways to get good mental (精神的) health.
38 Taking the time to examine our repetitive thoughts and learn something from them may help change them from something troubling to something more useful. So try accepting your thoughts, examine them with more openness, and consider steps you can take to make things better.
Try to stay present in the moment. For example, practice paying attention to your breath and its changing patterns. Pay attention to feelings in your body — pain, differences in temperature, and so on. ___39___。
Move outside. Rumination means getting lost in your thoughts to the point where you feel stuck. Hundreds of studies show physical exercise can be helpful for reducing rumination. 40 As another study found, walking in the woods reduced rumination more than walking along a road for the same amount of time.
A. Get some ideas.
B. Plan your future.
C. When that happens, our mental health may be influenced.
D. Remembering the past or imagining the future isn’t unusual.
E. But being outside in nature may help above physical exercise.
F. This can bring you into the present in a way that’ ll make thoughts disappear.

One sunny Saturday morning, I got ready for a hike with my classmates. I was so excited about it since it was my first time to go hiking. I ate a light breakfast just a few slices of bread and an egg. After that I grabbed my backpack and hurriedly ran out of my house and then met my classmates at the school gate. At that time I didn’t think that there would be a terrible disaster ahead.
The jungle (丛林) that we are going to was far from our area. Its name was Salymbia Jungle. The drive was 3 hours long but it was not a dull ride as we were all eager about the hike and we bad each other’s company. We appointed a guide and his name was Thomas. He said that he had hiked in the Salymbia Jungle lots of times, and he was familiar with the pathways. When we arrived, Thomas allowed us to begin. There were a wide variety of plants which I had never seen before. The smell of the jungle was so earthy. All of us were amazed by the beauty of the scenery and the sound of the creatures.
After a while we were walking and then I looked at my wrist (手腕) to check the time but then I realized my watch had fallen off. Then I walked back without telling anyone. I did not worry about getting lost since there were other persons behind and I thought I would have been able to catch up with my classmates. I went back searching the pathway and I lost track of time and lost sight of my classmates. I immediately realized that I was alone.
After I realized I was lost, the first thing I did was to check my phone to see how far away I was from my companions. However, I was having no luck because there was no network in my phone, which made my phone practically useless.
