Some people love their hometowns so they preserve their heritage and tell the rest of the world everything about it. One British man's effort deserves more praise. Artist Maurice Birch spent 54 years drawing the town of Aldridge
on a 100-foot-long roll of paper.
Birch bought the oversized paper roll in 1969, and only finished his visual love letter to his hometown in 2023. He paid 10 shillings for the scroll(卷轴) with hopes of entertaining his then 4-year-old son.
Now 82 years old, Birch turned this art project into a five-decade-long hobby. “I thought I would tear it off but
as I began to draw on it, I couldn't tear it up. After doing about 80 sketches(草图), I thought‘What else can I do now ’” That's when he decided to draw buildings of Aldridge, as he has lived his whole life there. “I decided to preserve the
scroll and keep it intact as so many old buildings have long disappeared from the landscape.”
The scroll now features 320 drawings of historic buildings in both ink and pencil. Since no city stays the same
for long, Birch's drawings include pubs, hotels, shops, and cottages that no longer exist— many of which he actually
drew from memory. Overall, he spent 2,560 hours, or 106 days, mixing the lost construction of the past with the way Aldridge looks today.
Since it would be hard for everyone to admire the scroll at the same time, Birch's work has been turned into a book titled Aldridge on a Roll. “Hopefully it will be a heritage showing the way Aldridge used to be,” the man says. “It was the most beautiful village when I was a boy. It's still a lovely place to live and I wouldn't want to live anywhere
else but many of the buildings have gone. I' ve always wished my children could see Aldridge as it was and this way,
they sort of can.”

25. What does the underlined word“intact” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Unbroken. B. Damaged. C. Separated. D. Folded.
26. Why is Birch's scroll made into a book

B. It will be sold at a high price.
C. He wants to make it accessible to more people.
D. He intends to tell more people about his story.
27. What is the author's main purpose of writing this text
A. To highlight the artist's skills.
B. To show the changes in the town.
C. To promote the artist's new book.
D. To praise the artist's contributions to his hometown.

Cycling advocates in British Columbia(B. C. , a province of Canada) hope a new U. S. study will boost the case to allow cyclists to yield (slow down, and pass without stopping fully) at stop signs and safely roll through intersections(十字路口). While it's the law likeB. C. for cyclists to stop at stop signs, like every other road user, it's common to
see people on two wheels choose an illegal yield—— rolling past the sign after checking it's safe to pass through. “It makes it a lot more efficient,” said Vancouver cyclist Ben Cooper about getting through intersections. “I'm not going to come to a full stop. Like, the amount of energy it takes to stop my entire bike and get it going again— it just doesn't make sense.”
The argument over whether rolling stops(no need to stop completely, but pass slowly) for cyclists should be legalized has been ongoing since the early 1980s when Idaho first made it legal, resulting in the move being named the Idaho stop. Several other U. S. states have since followed suit, including Oregon. Canada hasn't yet adopted laws for rolling stops for bikes.
Cycling advocates in B. C. say they' ve been pushing the issue for years and hope a new study from researchers at Oregon State University, published this month in an academic transportation journal, will aid their argument.
The Oregon study says with proper education for both cyclists and drivers, Idaho stops do not lead either riders or motorists to act unsafely. Researchers observed 60 people paired off who went through 16 virtual interaction scenes as either cyclist or motorist, coming together at a four-way-stop intersection. They found that instead of drivers being angry toward cyclists who appeared to be breaking the law by rolling through, driving participants approached intersections either more slowly or at a similar pace after being educated about what bicycle rolling stops were.
Nearly four out of five crashes involving cyclists in B. C. happen at intersections. “This research gives decision-makers information to support prospective legal policies, set up educational programs and design strong enforcement(执行) practices,” said Hurwitz, one of the researchers.
28. What does Ben Cooper think of the idea of allowing cyclists to yield at stop signs
A. It is against the law. B. It improves traffic efficiency.
C. It gives cyclists freedom. D. It is safer for cyclists.
29. What happened after Idaho legalized rolling stops for cyclists
A. Bicycle sales went up B. Accidents decreased.
C. Protests started to increase. D. More states adopted the same laws.
30. How did the drivers change their behavior after they learned bicycle rolling stops
A. They became angrier. B. They drove faster.
C. They approached with greater care. D. They ignored cyclists.
31. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Citizens Call for a Ban on Cycling
B. Bicycle Safety Tips on Rolling Stops
C. B. C. Cyclists Push for“Idaho Stop” Law
D. Stop Laws for Cyclists: Time for Change

Sea lions have become the first-ever“videographers” of the ocean. In a recent study, scientists from the University of Adelaide have equipped Australian sea lions with cameras to gather critical data on their behavior and habitats. By attaching these monitoring devices, scientists are hoping to see these endangered creatures’ habitats.
With these high-tech tracking devices, experts can record detailed information about their movements and diving patterns. In turn, it can help us gather insights to improve conservation efforts for seals. Australian sea lions, which are native to the southern and western coasts of Australia, are currently facing severe threats from habitat loss, fishing activities, and climate change. For years, their population has been steadily declining.
The collected data will provide invaluable insights into the sea lions’ feeding habits, migration(迁徙) routes, and breeding(繁殖) sites. Dr. Jane Smith, an ocean biologist at the University of Adelaide, emphasized the importance of this research. “By understanding where these sea lions go and what they do, we can create more effective conservation plans to protect theirnaturalhabitatsandensuretheirsurvival,”shesaidinareportbyPhys.org.
Results from the monitoring project have already shown surprising findings. The sea lions are traveling further
and diving deeper than previously believed, which suggests that they might be adapting to changing environmental conditions. These findings help shape conservation efforts to better protect these critical habitats.
The project has received attention and support from the broader scientific community and the public. The innovative use of technology in wildlife conservation demonstrates a promising approach to addressing the challenges faced by endangered species. As this research progresses, it is expected to contribute significantly to ocean conservation
efforts not only for Australian sea lions but also for other ocean species. The comprehensive data collected will help
create targeted and effective conservation strategies, ensuring the health and sustainability of ocean ecosystems.
32. What does the author mean by mentioning“videographers” in Paragraph 1
A. Cameras will be attached to sea lions. B. Sea lions will learn how to take photos.
C. Sea lions will work with photographers. D. Cameras will be used as security guards.
33. What is likely a key goal of the sea lion research
A. To track migrations. B. To deal with sea pollution.
C. To enhance species protection. D. To improve fishing techniques.
34. What can we infer about Australian sea lions from Paragraph 4
A. They are becoming more numerous. B. They are adaptive.
C. They dive deep to avoid enemies. D. They behave as expected.
35. What does the author imply about the technology in wildlife conservation
A. It's money-consuming. B. It's fully developed.
C. It's widely accepted. D. It shows promising potential.

第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sarah Jenkins sat at her kitchen table, staring at the pile of unpaid bills. The weight of being a single mother
pressed heavily on her shoulders. Two years had passed since her husband Tom's sudden death in a car accident,
leaving her alone to raise their two children, Emma aged 8 and Michael aged 6.
“Mommy, I'm hungry,” Michael's small voice broke through her thoughts. Sarah quickly wiped away the tears that had gathered in her eyes and managed a smile, her voice shaking slightly as she replied, “Dinner will be ready
soon, sweetheart,” though she knew there wasn't much left in the refrigerator.
Working as a part-time waitress barely covered their basic needs. Sarah had to quit her full-time teaching job
to care for the children after Tom's death. The life insurance money was running out, and the medical bills from Tom's final days had used up their savings.
One evening, while serving tables at the local restaurant, Sarah overheard a conversation about job openings at the community center. Mrs. Anderson, a regular customer with kind eyes and a warm smile, noticed Sarah's interest.
“Sarah, dear, you used to be a teacher, right ” Mrs. Anderson asked gently, her voice cutting through the restaurant's noise.
“Yes, I used to teach in a primary school for six years...” Sarah replied.
“The community center needs someone to run their after-school program. With your experience, you'd be perfect for it. Plus, they offer childcare for staff members,” Mrs. Anderson explained, placing a business card on the table
with a soft smile, as if offering a lifeline to a woman who was struggling. The card seemed to shine under the restaurant's lights, a symbol of hope and a possible new beginning. Sarah looked at it and considered the possibility of returning to her former job while also meeting her family's current needs.
But she was still hesitant.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That night, Sarah took out the card.
With her daughter's encouragement, she called the community center and scheduled an interview.

Text 10
I'm going to talk about something that can completely change the way you learn English: reading. Reading helps you in many ways. The most important benefit is vocabulary. When reading, you are exposed to hundreds, maybe thousands of words that you may not hear in everyday conversation. Reading gives you access to this rich vocabulary.
Grammar and sentence structure are other big benefits. When you read, you see how English sentences are put together. You begin to recognize how grammar works naturally, without studying long lists of rules. With time, you will start forming better sentences when speaking or writing.
Reading also gives you a sense of accomplishment. Imagine finishing your first English book or even a long article. It feels great, doesn't it That feeling motivates you to keep going. So don't hesitate. Pick up that book, article or even an online post and start reading.
I'd love to hear from you. What kind of books or articles do you like reading Drop your answers in the comments below and let's get a conversation started.
