"I feel hopeless about my school life! I'm not a popular student in our class. I can't play basketball as well as other boys. And I failed Math exam again yesterday, which made me...", Tom, a 16-year-old boy of Mt. Brown's class, lowered his head, sobbing(啜泣)uncontrollably in the Teacher's Office.
"I'm sorry to hear that, Mr. Brown patted Tom's shoulder gently and asked the young boy to sit down in front of the desk so that they could sit opposite each other. This was the first time that Tom had turned to Mr. Brown for help because he was so shy and quiet in school. But Mr. Brown had noticed him many times in school's volunteer work. Looking at the sad young boy, Mr. Brown was silent for a moment. Then, he took a piece of paper and a pen out of his drawer.
"I'd like to invite you to take a surprise test, my boy", said Mr. Brown, passing the pen to Tom. "A new Math exam ", Tom raised his eyes which were still filled with tears, got the pen and
- replied in confusion, worrying about the coming challenge. "Just take it easy because it's not about numbers or formulas(方程)”, Mr. Brown comforted him with a big smile. Not knowing what would come in the exam paper, Tom nodded his head and wiped his tears with his sleeves.
Mr. Brown handed Tom the question paper and encouraged him softly, "Now, you can begin and please finish the test within ten minutes." To Tom's surprise, there were no questions in the paper, but just a black dot in the center of the page. Mr. Brown thoroughly read through Tom's puzzled expressions and said, "I want you to write what you see there." Confused as he was, Tom began to do what he had been asked to do. Meanwhile, Mr. Brown picked up a novel and started reading it, waiting patiently.
Paragraph one:
Tom scratched(挠)his head anxiously, having no idea what to write.
Paragraph two:
"What your writing focused on was just the black dot, but you have a whole white paper," said Mr. Brown.

八、写作示范
第一篇
续写第一段:Tom scratched (挠) his head anxiously, having no idea what to write. He bit his pen, his brows furrowed deeply. Glancing at the clock ticking away the minutes, his heart raced. Should he just describe the dot's shape and color Or was there more to it After what felt like an eternity, he hesitantly jotted down a few words about the small, black dot in the center of the page, feeling utterly unsure if that was what Mr. Brown expected.
续写第二段:“What your writing focused on was just the black dot, but you have a whole white paper,” said Mr. Brown. Tom looked up, his eyes filled with confusion. Mr. Brown continued gently, “Just like in life, when you face problems, you tend to zero in on the difficulties, like this dot. But look around it, there's so much more. You have friends you haven't discovered, talents you haven't tapped into. This one failure in math doesn't define you.” Tom's eyes widened as the realization dawned. The heaviness in his heart lifted, and he nodded, a newfound determination gleaming in his eyes.
第二篇
续写第一段:Tom scratched (挠) his head anxiously, having no idea what to write. He drummed his fingers on the desk, his eyes darting between the dot and the clock. His mind was a jumble of thoughts. Was it a test of his creativity Or his attention to detail In a panic, he finally scribbled something about the dot's position and how it stood out against the white. But he knew it was a feeble attempt.
续写第二段:“What your writing focused on was just the black dot, but you have a whole white paper,” said Mr. Brown. Tom stared at his teacher, waiting for an explanation. Mr. Brown leaned forward, his voice soft yet firm. “Tom, in life, we often magnify our problems, just as you did with this dot. But if you step back, you'll see the big picture. You might not be good at basketball, but you're excellent at volunteering. You failed math this time, but you have countless chances to improve. Don't let the ‘black dots’ overshadow the ‘white paper’ of your potential.” Tom's face lit up as understanding flooded in. He felt a surge of confidence, ready to face life's challenges anew.
参考答案
Tom scratched his head anxiously, having no idea what to write. He took a deep breath, looking around the office to search for some inspiration. But it didn't work! All he could think of was just the black dot in the paper. He cast a quick look at Mr. Brown who was totally absorbed in his book. Time going so fast, there were only thirty seconds left! Tom had no choice but to write a very short sentence on the paper in a hurry-_What I can see is just a black dot in the center of the paper! Then, he handed it to Mr. Brown perplexedly.
"What your writing focused on was just the black dot, but you have a whole white paper," said Mr. Brown. "Don't get discouraged just by a small dot! " continued Mr. Brown. "I'm not going to grade you on this test; I just wanted you to know this." "Likewise, the black dots you talked about as your weaknesses are nothing compared to the other merits you've possessed." Then he praised Tom for what he had done for the volunteer work in school. "You are such a kind and helpful boy. You should take pride in yourself! I believe you will have a promising future.", said Mr. Brown, giving Tom a warm hug. Deeply struck by what Mr. Brown said, Tom nodded his head, his eyes glistening with light.
