Outside the first few stars were beginning to appear. Dadu climbed on his bicycle and as my friend Aslam and I jogged along beside him, he said, “Come on, boys, can’t you keep up with an old man ” I wished I had been at home, studying for that exam tomorrow... But Dadu was counting on me. We needed the money. He worked hard so I could stay in school although he once told me that he never liked the work. As we crossed the train tracks, two policemen passed by.
We melted silently into the shadows of the forest. Dadu switched on his torch. The flash of light swept the trees, illuminating enormous spider webs stretched between tree branches like soft nets.
“A den(兽窝) is near, so you both stay here and watch. I’m going further on to another den.” Dadu handed Aslam an old cardboard box. “Remember, the traders won’t pay for an empty box. I am counting on you, boys.” Dadu left.
“This makes me frightened,” Aslam said, “if we get caught out there hunting for a pangolin (穿山甲), we could go to prison!”
The moon climbed higher into the sky... “Oy! What’s that noise ” Aslam shouted.
My heart sank. A pangolin. For a while I held my breath, watching the pangolin sweep dry leaves with its flat, brown-gray tail. Its tiny eyes shined. With long claws(爪子), it dug through a pile of dirt. And then in the moonlight, we saw it.
Aslam picked up the box. “Get it, Rahim! Then let’s call your grandpa and get out of here!”
“I can’t.” My voice sounded as quiet as a flower unfolding its petals. “You have to,” Aslam said. “Your grandpa said you have to be a man, remember ” “I know, I know!” I was almost shouting.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
伏笔:“Dadu worked hard so I could stay in school although he once told me that he never liked the work.”
伏笔:“We melted silently into the shadows of the forest.”
伏笔:“The traders won’t pay for an empty box. I am counting on you, boys.”
伏笔:“Aslam said, ‘if we get caught out there hunting for a pangolin (穿山甲), we could go to prison!’”

As Dadu walked up to us, his eyes fixed on the empty box, a frown creased his forehead. For a moment, the silence was deafening. I could almost hear my heart pounding in my ears. Aslam and I exchanged nervous glances, bracing ourselves for the scolding we thought was coming. But then, Dadu's stern expression softened. He looked at the pangolin, now scurrying further away, and let out a sigh. "Boys," he said quietly, "I've seen too many of these creatures suffer. I was wrong to drag you into this." Relief washed over us. We joined Dadu, and as we made our way out of the forest, the moonlight bathed our path. We knew there would be hardships ahead, finding a new way to earn money, but our hearts were light. The stars above seemed to wink at us, as if in agreement that we had made the right choice.
Back home, we huddled around the kitchen table, Dadu's face determined. "Tomorrow," he said, "we'll start looking for honest work. Maybe farming, or helping out at the local market." I nodded, feeling a new sense of purpose. We had not only saved a life but also found a new direction for ours.
When Dadu reached us and saw the untouched box, his shoulders slumped. I could sense his disappointment, not at us, but at the situation he had put us all in. Aslam shuffled his feet, and I swallowed hard, ready to defend our decision. But before I could say a word, Dadu spoke. "I'm proud of you two," he murmured. "I've been having sleepless nights, knowing this was wrong. But I was too stubborn to change." His admission took us by surprise. The pangolin peeked out from behind a bush, as if listening. We left it there, unharmed.
Walking out of the forest, the night air felt cool and refreshing. Dadu put his arms around our shoulders. "We'll find a way," he said. "A way that doesn't cost these precious animals their lives." As we neared home, we saw the first rays of dawn breaking. It was a new beginning. We planned to visit the village elders, seek their advice on legitimate livelihoods. With hope in our hearts and a clean conscience, we stepped forward into a future that was uncertain but filled with possibilities.
Holding the pangolin, I could feel its heart beating. The scales were cool under my fingertips. My stomach churned. I knew that Dadu was counting on me and I should stay in school, but I also knew what the traders would do with the pangolin. Never should I let such a thing happen, although Aslam could’t understand. Then I did what I must do to be a “man”. I found the darkest place I could to nestle the pangolin and left.
We reached home with an empty box. I bowed my head. “Dadu,” I said, “I’m sorry I could not do what you asked me.” My heart felt as heavy as a cloud inside of me. I felt Dadu’s old, rough hands on my face. “Rahim, you are tender-hearted. I never liked the work.” He raised a finger before I could argue. “I will make ends meet somehow. Don’t you worry.” I nodded my head and looked back at the forest which glowed like a king’s crown with orchids. And deep in its green heart, the
pangolin would be safe.
