When it comes to basic equipment and tools — whether they are for your vehicle, your camping setup or yourself — we appreciate the little things. Items that don’t necessarily have high prices but are smart in their simplicity can make life easier. In fact, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without them! Here are some of our favorites.
Getting caught in the rain
I love the K-Way Backpack Rain Poncho. Made from 100 percent 190T polyester (聚酯纤维) with a PVC coating and a seam-sealed design, it provides comfortable and reliable protection against strong winds and heavy downpours. It’s long and has enough space to hold a backpack, while a hood (兜帽) adds an extra layer of defence in unexpected weather conditions. It comes in a carry-on bag for convenience on the go.

No shocker here
It can be quite disappointing to try and keep your electrical and extension plugs dry and dust-free while camping. Some people even go travelling, wrapping the connections in plastic bags. There is a simple and far less unsightly (不雅观的) solution, though. The Torpedo Electric Cover from Masterplug is made from lasting plastic and it is perfect to protect your power connections from water, dust or accidental disconnection. It is suitable from cables with a diameter (直径) between 5 and 9 mm.

Hot water anywhere
The Aquablitz Portable Water Heater is convenient and the most economical way to heat water in a container, such as a bucket... anywhere electricity is available. This makes it great for camping or travelling. It is fitted with a 1.1 m cable and a three-pin plug and it has a built-in heat safety sensor. You simply fully submerge (浸没) the unit in water, plug it in and switch it on. When the water has reached the desired temperature, you simply switch it off and remove it from the container.

I used to read tens of books every month. But as I grew up, things changed. I find it increasingly difficult to find the time and motivation to sit down and read a book from cover to cover.
To keep track of the books I’ve read, I turned to Goodreads, a social networking platform for book lovers. It’s a great way to share recommendations with friends and show off your literary progress. However, if we can’t achieve reading goals or can’t catch up with our friends, it can also exacerbate the feeling of “not doing enough” of your favorite hobby.
Halimah Begum, a literature editor from London, understands the struggle. “With Goodreads constantly tracking my reading, I am often worrying and feeling the pressure to read more books.” she says. “Sometimes, I feel under great pressure because I don’t want to fall behind on my goal and not reach it at the end of the year.”
I asked Nicole Villegas, an occupational therapist, about our obsession with tracking everything we do. She explained that it can give us a sense of control and provide us with a tool to measure our progress. “When we track things like the books we’ve read or the friends we’ve visited, we’re essentially gathering data about our hobbies,” she says. “It’s a powerful tool to help us look back on our progress and give us a sense of accomplishment.”
Unfortunately, the social aspect of apps like Goodreads doesn’t help. “Setting goals or tracking progress on public platforms adds a layer of extrinsic motivation that can also contribute to a sense of pressure to perform or give in to social comparisons,” Villegas says. “When it comes to reading, people may be tempted to finish books that aren’t a good fit instead of following their interests.”
Despite this, we often forget the point of doing hobbies in the first place. “Reading shouldn’t be something we have to ‘smash’, but just what we do for the joy of it. Maintain the feeling as you navigate your book-tracking app and if you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or pressured, set it aside,” Villegas continues. “At the end of the day, it’s you and your book.”
41. What does the underlined word “exacerbate” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Worsen. B. Affect. C. Relieve. D. Improve.
42. What does Halimah Begum think of tracking one’s reading
A. It is a waste of time. B. It makes one feel stressed.
C It encourages one to read more. D. It helps one to enjoy reading.
43. Why do we like to track everything we do according to Nicole Villegas
A. To show off to our friends. B. To try to spend our time wisely.
C. To find what suits us most. D. To obtain a sense of achievement.
44. What’s Nicole Villegas’s suggestion about using book-tracking apps
A. To avoid using it. B. To use it reasonably.
C. To rely more on it. D. To make full use of it.
45. What’s the main idea of this article
A. The best way to track reading progress — Goodreads.
B. The necessity to ignore social media and focus on hobbies.
C. The positive and negative effects of tracking our hobbies.
D. The importance of setting goals to help people stay motivated.

Millions of older people, laborers and cancer sufferers could be unable to use their fingerprints to log in online bank accounts. Banks are spending millions of pounds on fingerprint technology to replace passwords. But banks may have to rethink these plans after warnings that the technology flawed (有缺陷). Representatives of major banks at a London conference were told many older people’s fingerprints are too faded for the machines to recognize.
John Daugman, a professor of computer vision and pattern recognition at the University of Cambridge, says, “Fingerprints can ‘rub off’ for many kinds of laborers—their skin becomes almost smooth. Gardeners often acquire a lot of wounds on their fingers, and people who work with chemicals, such as cleaners, also suffer damage of fingerprints.”
Jean Slocombe, a senior nurse at Cancer Research UK, says, “Some drugs can cause the skin of hands and feet to peel. In severe cases, the fingers can peel, and it’s possible that this could change a patient’s fingerprints. This should improve once treatment ceases, but severe scarring(伤疤) can change fingerprints in the long term.”
Fingerprints are generally considered more secure than passwords for several reasons. Unlike passwords, fingerprints cannot be easily copied, written down, shared, or guessed. Additionally, it is impossible to forget one’s fingerprints. Currently, banks offer customers the option to use a password or PIN (personal identification number) for online access to their money. However, technology experts have predicted that companies might do away with passwords entirely to decrease the risk of fraud (诈骗). Should this transition to fingerprint technology occur, there is a potential risk that millions of bank customers could find themselves unable to access their accounts.
Banks have tried other security measures, such as facial recognition—but fingerprint technology is often the best one, as it is fast and people are more familiar with it. Nick Dryden, a chief executive of technology company Sthaler, says, “Businesses like fingerprint technology because it’s fast.”
“There must always be a back-up so that if it doesn’t work, there is another way of paying, such as with a password.” Dryden adds that using the veins(静脉) in someone’s fingers to identify them is more secure and means people with faded prints will not be left behind as technology advances.
46. Which of the following is the critical flaw of using fingerprints to log into accounts
A. Fingerprints can be easily stolen from photos.
B. Fingerprint recognition adapts to medical changes.
C. The application of fingerprint technology costs too much.
D. Elderly people’s fingerprints may be too faint for detection.
47. According to John Daugman, what causes unrecognizable fingerprints
A. Excessive use of technology. B. Physical labor and natural aging.
C. Environmental exposure process. D. Lack of proper fingerprinting equipment.
48. What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A. Experts recommend replacing passwords soon.
B. Fingerprints can totally avoid the risk of fraud.
C. Switching to fingerprints might lock out many customers.
D. Passwords and PINs are preferred by banks due to their simplicity.
49. Which is Dryden’s suggestion about fingerprint technology
A. Using veins instead of fingerprints isn’t workable.
B. There must be other ways to get into bank accounts.
C. Its greatest advantage is its high speed of recognition.
D Passwords are still the most reliable security measure now.
50. ’What is the main idea of the passage
A. Comparing password and fingerprint security.
B. Enhancing and upgrading bank security measures.
C. Presenting fingerprint technology challenges in banking.
D. Advancing fingerprint and facial recognition technology.
D
To learn to think is to learn to question. Those who don’t question never truly think for themselves. These are simple rules that have governed the advancement of science and human thought since the beginning of time. Advancements are made when thinkers question theories (理论) and introduce new ones. Unfortunately, it is often the great and respected thinkers who end up slowing the progress of human thought. Aristotle was a brilliant philosopher whose theories explained much of the natural world, often incorrectly. He was so respected by the scientific community that even 1,200 years after his death, scientists were still trying to build upon his mistakes rather than correct them!
Brilliant minds can intimidate up-and-coming thinkers who are not confident of their abilities. They often believe they are not as good as the minds of giants such as Aristotle, leading many to accept current ideas instead of questioning them.
I, like many thinkers of the past, once believed in my mental weakness. I was certain that my parents, my teachers— adults in general— were always right. They were like a textbook to me; I didn’t question what was written on those pages. I respected them, and accepted whatever they told me. But that attitude soon changed. My mind’s independence was first developed in the classroom.
A stern, 65-year-old elementary-school science teacher once told me that light is a type of wave. I confidently went through years of school believing that light is a wave. One day, however, I heard the German exchange student mention that light could be made up of particles (粒子). As the others laughed at his statement, I started to question my beliefs.
Maybe the teachers and textbooks hadn’t given me the whole story. I went to the library, did some research and learned of the light-as-a-wave versus light-as-a-particle debate. I read about Einstein’s discovery of the dual nature of light and learned the facts of a paradox (悖论) that puzzles the world’s greatest thinkers to this day. Light behaves as both a particle and a wave. I realized I had gone through life accepting only half of the story as the whole truth.
Each new year brought more new facts, and I formulated even more questions. I found myself in the library after school, trying to find my own answers to gain a more complete understanding of what I thought I already knew. I discovered that my parents and teachers are good tools in my quest for knowledge, but they are never the final word. Even textbooks can be challenged. I learned to question my sources, I learned to be a thinker. I once believed that everything I learned at home and at school was certain, but I have now discovered to re-examine when necessary.
Questions are said to be the path to knowledge and truth, and I plan to continue questioning. How many things do we know for sure today that we will question in the future At this moment, I know that our sun will burn for another five billion years, and I know nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole. This knowledge, however, may change in the next 20 years — maybe even in the next two. The one thing we can control is our openness to discovery. Questions are the tools of open minds, and open minds are the key to intellectual advancement.
51. In the first paragraph, Aristotle is taken as an example to show that ________.
A. huge influence of great thinkers may stop human thought from developing
B. great thinkers often make mistakes and then correct them
C. advancements are made when thinkers question theories
D. he is the greatest and respected philosopher of all time
52. What does the underlined word “intimidate” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Persuade. B. Encourage. C. Strengthen. D. Discourage.
53. The author began to question his previous beliefs because ________.
A. what he learned from textbooks before turned out to be wrong
B. he was laughed at by other students for his unacceptable statement
C. he was inspired by the different ideas from an exchange student
D. he was not satisfied with his life and desperate to achieve success
54. According to the passage, the author ________.
A. looks down upon great thinkers all the time
B. never doubts what he has learned in the textbook
C. is determined to be a thinker and questioner
D. always throws himself into the laboratory
55. We can conclude from the last paragraph that ________.
A. the author is not quite sure about his future
B. questioning is necessary to promote advancement
C the theory of black holes will change in two years
D. we human beings don’t dare to predict future.

When I think of the hardest moments of my life, ironically many have turned out to be blessings. The most severe one was being pretty much kicked out of my. PhD program at the University of Georgia in 2016.
The program in Georgia turned out not to be the right fit for me despite my best efforts. The whole year was riddled with exhaustion, insecurity, fear, and exclusion. I was in therapy myself for most of the year to cope, and the only thing that made it tolerable was a lot of support from my family and friends.
I was utterly devastated when I went back home; it felt like my career was over. Fast forward to today, however, and I can see that getting driven out of the Georgia program was one of the best things that ever happened to me. In 2017, when I transferred to a doctoral program in San Diego, I began to thrive and now my business is doing exceptionally well. I am deeply grateful I studied in San Diego and happy that I didn’t stay in Georgia. It was great that I was driven out! As the saying goes, “What seems like good or bad news now can turn out to be the opposite in the future.”
Ironically, the research and writing training from the University of Georgia significantly helped me develop my academic, professional, and personal writing. I worked hard in Georgia and it paid off: The learning and growth I experienced were incomparable.
As my personal example demonstrates, life is a total rollercoaster. Every now and then you are able to discover a new high, a ceiling-breaking moment, whereas in other moments you may feel like you’re falling deeper and deeper into hell. While these experiences can be incredibly tough, they present us with valuable opportunities to trust life and cultivate personal growth and learning.

C. It encourages one to read more.

D Elderly people’s fingerprints may be too faint for detection.
D. Passwords are still the most reliable security measure now.
50. ’What is the main idea of the passage
A. Comparing password and fingerprint security.
B. Enhancing and upgrading bank security measures.
C. Presenting fingerprint technology challenges in banking.
D. Advancing fingerprint and facial recognition technology.

【答案】Dear MrWhite;
I hope this letter finds you well. As an exchange student, I am writing to propose an initiative of establishing a small Chinese herbal botanical garden on campus.
Firstly, it serves as an educational resource, offering students the opportunity to learn about the cultural heritage of traditional Chinese herbs. By engaging in hands-on activities such as planting, nurturing, and harvesting, students can develop a deeper appreciation for the importance of biodiversity and sustainable practices in agriculture. Secondly, the garden will create a green space that enhances the aesthetic appeal of our campus and improve local air quality.
We have selected jasmine and mint. Jasmine, is used in Chinese medicine to relieve stress and promote relaxation. Mint, on the other hand, is renowned for its refreshing scent and cooling properties, making it a popular ingredient in teas.
In conclusion, I hope that you will support us in turning this vision into reality.
Yours sincerely,
Li Jin
