In our community, I went downstairs to join in a “barter (以物易物)” event and found a box at the entrance of the hallway with the words “Barter Box” written on it. I remembered that some neighbors had shown off their rich box shops, so I wanted to see if there were any tomatoes I liked inside. However, I found only a few zucchinis (西葫芦) left in the box.
Zucchinis are one of the supplies frequently given out in the community, and almost every household has some. I was surprised: Who would be so inconsiderate to take the items everyone wanted and leave these unwanted zucchinis
The next day, I noticed that the zucchinis had been exchanged, and the box had turned into an amazing “grocery store”. After watching for some time, I found that in the morning, the box still contained the unwanted zucchinis, but by evening, they had all been exchanged for other essential items. This kind of exchange happened every day.
One day, when I went downstairs, I happened to meet my neighbor, Mrs Shi. She skillfully took zucchinis from the box and put in a few bags of milk. I was even more puzzled, remembering that Mrs Shi had once quietly complained about not liking zucchinis when supplies were given out.
Through the community’s group chat, I learned the following story. A week ago, Mrs Shi was about to go upstairs with her group purchase supplies when she was stopped by an elderly lady on the first floor. The old lady anxiously asked her how to buy fresh vegetables. Mrs Shi then realized that the old lady lived alone and might not know how to use a smartphone for group purchases. She wanted to give some vegetables to the old lady for free, but the old lady firmly refused.

In this community, the barter box became a symbol of kindness, where neighbors' love and care were exchanged daily.(在这个社区,以物易物的箱子成了善良的象征,邻居们的爱与关怀每天都在这里交换。)

Mrs Shi offered to sell her vegetables cheaply, but the old lady refused again. Standing there, Mrs Shi racked her brain, trying to think of a way to help without hurting the old lady's pride. Suddenly, an idea flashed through her mind. She said with a warm smile, "Auntie, how about we barter You must have something at home that you don't need much. We can exchange them for these vegetables. It'll be fun!" The old lady looked hesitant at first but then nodded slowly. That day, the old lady gave Mrs Shi a few handmade cloth napkins in exchange for the zucchinis.
第二段
The “grocery store” became a place where people could help the old lady. Word spread quickly among the neighbors. Everyone started to bring items they no longer needed to the barter box, hoping to exchange with the old lady. Some brought canned food, some brought daily necessities. At first, the old lady was a bit shy, but as time went by, she was deeply touched by the kindness of her neighbors. One day, I decided to join in too. I put a box of cookies in the box and took a zucchini. Looking at the bustling barter box, I felt the strong bond of our community. It was a place filled with love and care.
Mrs Shi offered to sell her vegetables cheaply, but the old lady refused again. Mrs Shi understood the old lady's pride well. She gently took the old lady's hand and said, "Dear auntie, I've been thinking. I really love the knitted scarves you make. I was wondering if you could spare one and exchange it for these vegetables. I've been looking for a nice one like yours." The old lady's eyes lit up a little. She had always been proud of her knitting skills. After a moment of thought, she agreed. From then on, the barter between them became a regular thing.
第二段
The “grocery store” became a place where people could help the old lady. Neighbors, learning about the situation, actively participated. They would bring various items - books, small handicrafts, and even some home - grown herbs. The old lady, in return, offered her own handicrafts or some preserved fruits she made. Every time I passed by the barter box and saw the smiles on everyone's faces, I was deeply moved. It wasn't just about swapping things; it was about building a community full of warmth and mutual understanding. This simple barter activity had transformed our community into a place where love and kindness thrived.
Mrs Shi offered to sell her vegetables cheaply, but the old lady refused again. At this point, Mrs Shi noticed the zucchinis in the old lady’s house and guessed that she might not like eating zucchinis. So, she proposed the idea of barter. Thus, she took away the zucchinis and left the items the old lady needed. Later, the “grocery store” in the box started operating, and I often saw other neighbors in the building putting essential items into the box and taking away the old lady’s zucchinis.
The “grocery store” became a place where people could help the old lady. I was fortunate to go from being an observer to a participant. Just like now, I put two bags of milk into the box and took out a zucchini. I felt a sense of connection with my neighbors, knowing that we were all helping each other in small but meaningful ways. This simple act of bartering brought us closer together and made our community feel more like a big family.
