A Practical Guide to Stargazing
The growing trend of astrotourism continues to draw new travellers to the wonders of the night sky in places where the stars shine bright. Here's everything you need to know to plan a trip.
When and Where to Go Stargazing
Winter is the best time of year for stargazers to admire fantastic starry sky due to
longer hours of darkness, and the air tends to be clearer (astronomers call this good seeing’). A good resource for choosing a destination is DarkSky International’ s certified list of Dark Sky Places, while its DarkSky Approved Lodging recommends stargazer-friendly accommodation. And Lightpollutionmap. info provides a light pollution map, using satellite data of artificial light at night to show the darkest areas.
What to Bring on a Stargazing Trip
Night-time temperatures can drop significantly, especially in desert or mountain locations. Dress in layers and bring a good pair of finger-flap gloves and a hat, even in warmer climates.
Though your eyes are all you really need, binoculars on a tripod(三角架) can be surprisingly effective and cost-friendly for observing nearbv objects like our moon— and the rings of Saturn (土星). There are a range of apps, like SkyView or Stellarium, to help you identify stars and planets by pointing your phone at the sky.
Dark Sky Etiquette (礼仪)
Be respectful of other stargazers by using only red torch lights, which preserve our night vision and protect wildlife. Don't shine torches or phone screens at others— it can take 20 minutes for your eyes to re-adjust to the darkness after exposure to light.
21. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Improper time to see stars.
B. Some of the best destinations.
C. Platforms to choose stargazing sites.
D. New technology for observing the sky.
22. Which is NOT recommended in paragraph 3
A. Warm clothes. B. Observing devices.
C. The latest equipment. D. Professional applications.
23. What should a welcomed stargazer do
A. Be polite to people around.
B. Restrict lighting to a specific kind.
C. Don't disturb others to show respect.
D. Help those with poor eyesight readily.

J Before that summer, I often felt distant from my dad. He had a keen interest in technology as a risk management analyst. Meanwhile, I only valued computers to the extent that they provided Internet access. He spent his career making recommendations in uncertain circumstances, while I was always in trouble making decisions.
To feel closer to my dad, I once embraced his skiing hobby. On weekend trips, I
closely followed him down snow-covered mountains, trying hard to fit my skis within his tracks. My enthusiasm had a performative aspect, though, because I couldn't grasp anything else.
Still, despite our differences, I valued his insight. Before high school graduation, I was recommended to choose journalism as my major by the school adviser, who thought I had a talent in shaping feelings and ideas into words. Concerned that writing didn't seem practical as a career option, I consulted my dad. He confirmed my hunch(直觉), saying, “Do something with a stable income to support yourself.”
I took his suggestion to heart and changed my college application. However, as I did, I felt something break loose inside me. I buried the feeling, but I couldn't stop thinking that I had made a mistake. I knew I wanted to write since I was six— why had I thrown my dream away
After my first year of teaching, I visited my parents, feeling lost, meanwhile, angry and regretful. One night that August, I told him my dilemma. “I guess I should have studied what I loved, ” I said desperately. He just looked at me, his expression sincere, and said, “If you switch careers, I' ll support you fully! My role is supporting you to do what you want.”
I sat back, stricken with a realization: If I had stuck to writing years before, maybe he would have supported me toward journalism. I' ll never know, but I now realize that it is unrealistic for parents to provide perfect advice all the time. Instead, I can expect that everything my dad says is well-intentioned and then make my own decisions, knowing best what's in my heart.

Returning to the gym for the first time after a pause can be an awkward experience, your shoulders quaking and muscles trembling. However, discontinuous workout may not ultimately end up with weakened muscles, thanks to a phenomenon known as muscle memory. You might associate the term with the idea that you can jump back on a bike after years of not riding one, or undertake other previously-learned activities that involve motor skills and almost instinctively(本能的) remember how.
This brain-muscle connection is undoubtedly part of the story, but many exercise scientists have realized muscle memory is more than neuromuscular (神经肌肉的) conditioning. Changes deep inside our thread-like muscle cells may also explain why previously trained muscles grow back more quickly after taking up exercise again.
Eeli Halonen, a competitive bodybuilder and doctoral student in exercise physiology at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland, recalls the muscle mass he lost after a long break from training. What surprised him was the speed at which he regained his strength. To discover more about muscle recovery, Halonen conducted a controlled trial with his team. Half of over 40 untrained individuals were required to follow a 20-week workout program continuously for 20 weeks, while the other half split their training into two 10-week sessions with a 10-week break in between. During their break, participants experienced“significant” decreases in muscle size and, to a lesser extent, strength. However, it took only five weeks of retraining for them to return to their previous levels.
“It's a positive finding for those who need to take time off for whatever reason; you can rest assured that your muscles will readapt quite readily. People tend to overestimate how much exercise is needed to maintain muscle mass. The good news is that“A little bit of exercise can go a pretty long way in maintaining function and size,” says Halonen.
28. Which statement about“muscle memory” is correct
A. It prevents muscles growth.
B. It is the core of a new concept.
C. Its another function has been found.
D. Its connection with motor skills proves a mistake.
29. What motivated Halonen to carry out the controlled trail
A. His favorite sport. B. His own experience.
C. His desire to be stronger. D. His academic requirement.
30. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. It is important to take a rest to keep fit.
B. A little of exercise can hardly be beneficial.
C. Don't worry too much about interrupted workout.
D. The longer time you rest, the more quickly muscle recovers.
31. Which is the best title of the passage
A. Less is more B. Restart, regain
C. Pausing is reducing D. Once start, never stop
D
Over the next 20 years, the U. S. aims to plant billions more trees to restore forests after wildfires for the sake of ecosystem, but the nation's ambitious tree- planting goals aren't achievable, unless there are really big ways about seed.
That's partly because of irregular reproduction(繁殖) schedules. As part of a species’ survival strategy, the abundance of the seeds varies by year. Seeds are energy-intensive for trees to produce, and after several low-seed years there may be a sudden oversupply. As a result, a good seed crop happens only once every three to seven years, depending on the plant species. So 2020 was a good Douglas fir(黄杉) year; noble fir (冷杉) was big in 2016. Therefore, timing is everything. It's often difficult to find the right seed for a specific landscape— whether it's the type, quantity, or quality. And it's even harder when there's a need to move quickly, such as after a natural disaster.
Besides, mass experienced seed collectors are in great need. Matthew Aghai, senior director of biological research and development at the Seattle-based reforestation company, is one of those with awareness of seed crisis. Recently, he has been enthusiastically learning traditional gathering skills from Grandortt, The latter was taught, 45 years ago, how to read the forest by his parents, who were part of a former huge network of cone (球果) collectors, In the past few decades, however, the number of skilled seed collectors in the U. S. has been declining, though it's not clear by how much, since the poorly= paid work is seasonal, As a consequence, fewer collectors means fewer seeds, and ultimately, trees,
There is another challenge, too. The government estimates that 100 million acres of public land need restoring. But there aren't enough facilities to store the estimated billion pounds of plant seeds it would take to do that. According to a report from Bureau of Land Management(BLM) in October, 2020, at the federal level, from trees to wild grasses, the BLM has“a total storage capacity for 2.6 million pounds of seeds”. In a bad fire year, though, the BLM needs over seven million pounds of seeds to restore the burned landscape.
32. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean
A. Starting earlier to get more seeds. B. Quick collection at the right time.
C. Collecting some seeds every year. D. Taking action as quickly as possible.
33. What can be learned from paragraph 3
A. Grandorff learned seed gathering in school.
B. Gathering seeds used to be a well-paid job.
C. More people like Matthew are saving trees.
D. Skilled seed collectors are becoming less.
34. What is a possible cause of seed shortage
A. Fewer survival species. B. Unreasonable demand in amount.
C. Slow reaction to natural disasters. D. Unstable reproduction of seeds.
35. What did the BLM report reveal
A. Inadequate storage capacity. B. An incorrect official statistic.
C. Inefficient storage methods. D. The endangered ecosystem.

Carol Ansbro, Marion Bamforth, Susan Morris, and Mary Helliwell have been good friends since primary school. They had countless happy hours together, exploring the vast playground, dreaming big, and whispering secrets under the blanket of night. Each weekend, they gathered at Carol's home, making plans for the next week, looking forward to more excitements and surprises.
At seventeen, their friendship blossomed further during a summer trip to the seaside town of Torquay, Devon. As teenagers, the group stayed and soaked in the excitement of being on their own for the first time. It felt really fantastic and grown-up being on their own without parents. The sea breeze carried their giggles, and under the starlit(星光照耀的) sky, they promised to always stand by each other for ever. One day, a photographer happened to notice them and took a photo of them. So in blue jeans and white shirts—a common sight of teenage girls at tourist destinations in those days, each girl had a precious picture in the year of1972.
Following high school, life presented crossroads. Carol moved to Edinburgh for her art studies, Marion pursued medicine in Manchester: Susan ventured into engineering in Bristol, and Mary sailed off to Oxford for law. Distance stretched across miles, yet they had alternatives to stay together. Emails, calls and visits bridged the gaps created by geography. So, despite varied lifestyles and responsibilities, they prioritized reunions, whether virtual or in person, cherishing the moments they shared.
Fast forward to 50 years later, Carol, the eldest of the four, who was always
considerate and thoughtful, thought they should do something to celebrate their everlasting friendship. However, things were not easy as she had expected. Worried, she was at a loss where to start. But to her great joy, her grandson, Mike, who was having a summer break, volunteered to help her after hearing the story with her lifelong friends. The first thing he did was to look over his grandma's old stuff.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
An old photo attracted his attention immediately. Soon, each of them received a package.

Dear Tom,
I've been participating in the school reading club since high school.
One thing that impressed me most was the book discussion we had on "Pride and Prejudice". We shared our thoughts freely, and different perspectives really opened my eyes. Through this activity, my reading comprehension and communication skills have improved a lot. It also made me fall in love with reading and explore different worlds in books.
Reading has now become an indispensable part of my life.
Yours,

第二节:
(1)An old photo attracted his attention immediately. It was the photo from that memorable summer in Torquay in 1972. The four girls, with their youthful smiles and carefree postures, seemed to leap out of the picture. Mike could almost hear their laughter carried by the sea breeze. He realized this photo was a treasure trove of memories for his grandma and her friends. He carefully scanned the photo and had high-quality prints made. Then, he got creative. He added small notes on the back of each print, jotting down some of the funniest moments they had shared during that trip. He also found some vintage postcards of Torquay and included them in the package.
Soon, each of them received a package. As they unwrapped it, a rush of emotions overwhelmed them. The photo, now pristine and accompanied by the postcards and notes, took them back in time. Carol's letter spoke of the unbreakable bond they had formed and how this photo was a symbol of their enduring friendship. She suggested they each write a short memory on the back of the photo and send it back to her, so they could create a collective memory book. The idea sparked enthusiasm among them. They called each other, their voices filled with excitement and anticipation. They couldn't wait to start this new chapter in their friendship story, just like they had eagerly planned their adventures in the past.
