Even if you haven’t tried Pamela’s workouts, her name likely rings a bell — the German-born model is one of the world’s most popular fitness influencers. Lately, she’s been trying out something new: Baduanjin, a traditional Chinese fitness exercise, originally created over 800 years ago during the Song Dynasty. The name generally refers to how the eight individual movements characterize and give a silken quality to the movement of the body and its energy.
Baduanjin used to be popular mainly among older Chinese folks, but young people are now also getting into it. No equipment is necessary and it requires very little space or, perhaps most importantly in our fast-paced lives, time. In fact, it’s perfect for office workers, as they often suffer from lower back pain caused by hours sitting in front of the computer.
The video of Pamela doing Baduanjin has become a hit on Chinese social media, receiving millions of views. In addition to 9.68 million followers on YouTube, Pamela has established a presence on Chinese social media, including Bilibili, with more than 11.6 million followers. Showing her perfect figure year-round, Pamela has become an inspiration for many people worldwide, offering pathways to fat-burning, increased energy, and improved sleep quality.
Apparently, no one can resist the charm of Baduanjin. “I have been doing Baduanjin for about one month, which makes me sleep well and get stronger. I owe big thanks to Baduanjin since it gives me a much healthier lifestyle,” a young netizen commented below the video.
But not all people are suitable for practicing Baduanjin. Liu Xiaodan, an associate professor at Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, cautioned that people should always put safety first when doing Baduanjin, and patients who are extremely weak and fall easily should not take up this exercise.

At one time, our growing population was seen as central to wildlife extinction, resource exhaustion, pollution and environmental destruction. But today, our concerns shift to declining birth rates due to increased reproductive choice for women.
This is a positive development, but is often described as a “crisis” in the media, highlighting economic and senior care challenges. Lost in the conversation are the many positive aspects of an aging society, which is the result of people living healthier and longer lives, and common-sense realities like reduced needs for infrastructure (基础设施) and lower ecological impacts. Also lost is the fact that our population still grows by 80 million people every year.
And the consequences of high birth rates are severe. Among them is global warming. In fact, increased emissions (排放) from population growth have canceled more than three quarters of the emissions saved through energy efficiency and renewables over the past three decades.
Yet, despite how well-documented the link between population and climate is, the topic of lowering our population is rarely mentioned in conversations about solutions. Instead, the focus is on technology that will enable our entire growing population to enjoy the energy-intensive lifestyles currently enjoyed by the rich, without any climate impacts.
But “green” technology is not the solution it is advertised to be. Its expansion to the degree needed to power a growing population at a decent standard of living would itself require a shocking investment in fossil (化石) fuels. It also requires massive mining operations, many of which take place on the backs of low-wage workers in Africa where it is driving destruction of rainforests critical to the survival of great apes. Besides, it requires 10 times the land area as fossil fuel plants for the same amount of energy generated.
When global warming threatens to push billions into unsafe temperatures, it is no time to panic that we are adding fewer to those billions. In fact, declining birth rates should be cause for celebration as they signify advances in gender equality and a reduced burden on Earth.
1. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. The global population is decreasing every year.
B. The benefits of an aging society are overlooked.
C. The ecological environment is turning for the better.
D. The media make up misleading news about the population.
2. What is highlighted as a disadvantage of high birth rates
A. Reduced infrastructure needs. B. Challenges in senior care services.
C. A slowdown in economic growth. D. Increased greenhouse gas emissions.
3. Why is “green” technology questioned in the text
A. It does damage to the ecosystem. B. It is not popular around the world.
C. It is unaffordable for poor regions. D. It has little effect on reducing pollution.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Aging Societies: A Global Crisis B. The Mystery of “Green” Technology
C. The Trend of Population Growth D. Declining Birth Rates: A Hopeful Sign

Humans are not the animal kingdom’s only fashionistas. Tits (山雀) can be fashion followers, too, apparently. A latest study shows that, given the chance, they decorate their nests with this season’s must-have colour.
Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin were following up on a study published in 1934 by Henry Smith Williams, an American naturalist. He noticed that when he put various coloured balls of yarn (纱) out in his garden, almost always one and only one became popular that season for being included into local birds’ nests. But which particular color was favoured varied from season to season. This suggested that the colour chosen by one of the early birds was spotted and copied by others.
Williams’s work was, however, forgotten until they came across it while following up on a different study, published by a team at the University of Toulouse, suggesting fashion-following, too. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin therefore set out to re-run Williams’s experiment, but this time to collect some actual numbers.
The birds they followed were part of a well-monitored population of blue tits in a wood near the institute. Most birds in this wood carried tracking devices fitted to them after their capture in mist nets. That allowed the institute’s researchers to keep track of a vast number of individuals by recording their arrival at food containers throughout the wood. Instead of food, these containers were loaded with wool of different colors. Interestingly, researchers soon found that most nests of blue tits included only the color of the wool first chosen by a nest-builder.
Tits, then, do seem to be “on trend”, when it comes to nest-building materials. Why that should happen remains obscure. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin suspect the fashion leaders are older birds, and that evolution favours younger ones copying their elders since those elders have evidently survived what fortune has to throw at a tit. Williams’s original work, though, suggests such initial choices are at random — a bit like those of the leaders of human fashions.
5. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin contributed to Williams’s work.
B. Early birds’ color preference was copied by their fellows.
C. The yarn was the most popular material to decorate local birds’ nests.
D. The color of the yarn favored by local birds was fixed throughout the year.
6. How did Dr. Wild and Dr. Aplin improve Williams’s experiment
A. They observed the blue tits.
B. They studied the habits of blue tits.
C. They adopted the data-collecting method.
D. They fitted tracking devices to food containers.
7. What does the underlined word “obscure” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Hidden. B. Evident. C. Complicated. D. Shallow.
8. What is the main idea of the text
A. Birds favor certain colors in decoration.
B. Young birds follow their elders in fashion.
C. Young birds are just as intelligent as people.
D. Birds are just as fashion-conscious as people.

Some people are so rude. Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says “Thank you” Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you Who asks for a fact easily found on the Internet 1
Maybe I’m the rude one for not appreciating life’s little courtesies (礼节). But many social norms (规范) just don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication.
Take the thank-you note. Daniel Post Senning, a coauthor of Emily Post’s Etiquette, asked, “At what point does showing appreciation outweigh the cost ”
2 Think of how long it takes to listen to one of those messages. In texts, you don’t have to declare who you are or even say hello. E-mail, too, is slower than a text. The worst are those who leave a voice mail and then send an e-mail message to tell you they left a voice mail.
This isn’t the first time technology has changed our manners. 3 Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor, suggested that people say, “Ahoy!” Finally, hello won out, and the victory sped up the greeting’s use in face-to-face communications.
In the age of the smart phone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business’s phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, or an office, which can be easily found on a digital map. 4 And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.
How to handle these differing standards Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message. 5 In traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here’s hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that time-wasting forms of communication do.
A. Then there is voice mail.
B. Others, like me, want no reply.
C. But people still ask these things.
D. Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time
E. Won’t new technology bring about changes in our daily life
F. Face-to-face communication makes comprehension much easier.
G. When the telephone was invented, people didn’t know how to greet a caller.

What They Found Inside an Old Sofa Bought for $20 Was Life-Changing
In 2021, SUNY students Reese Werkhoven, Lara Russ, and Cally Guasti were living together in a small apartment. They decided to furnish their apartment.
The three had gone to a Salvation Army store to buy a sofa, and were forced to settle for an old, rather smelly specimen that none of them really liked, but was the only one that was affordable and would fit in their living room. That day, as they were testing out their new purchase, they noticed that something was making a crinkling noise inside the cushions (垫子). Upon further investigation, they discovered a few bubble-wrapped envelopes inside the sofa.
When they opened the envelopes, they were in shock. A large amount of cash was inside. As they continued to pick apart the piece of furniture, they discovered more and more money. Guasti said, “Just when we thought we pulled out the last envelope, we’d find another $1,000 a few minutes later.”
After some time, the three roommates had unearthed a good $40,000 in cash. The fantasies of what they could do with all this money started flowing immediately.
However, they were quickly brought back to reality when they saw that there was a woman’s name on one of the envelopes. That was when the moral dilemma started — what to do Keep the money for themselves, or try to find the owner
The three consulted their parents for advice, and the next day, Werkhoven got a call from his mom. She had tracked down the mystery woman and found a phone number.

原文
For most people, having a balanced meal rich in carbohydrates and protein two to four hours before a workout will supply enough energy to last the length of your routine. This also allows ample time for digestion and can help reduce gastrointestinal discomfort like nausea, vomiting or acid reflux, said Dr. Martha Gulati, a cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles who specializes in helping her patients make lifestyle changes through diet and exercise.
If you have a few hours before you plan to exercise, a pre-workout meal might include a high-quality protein (like salmon, chicken or tofu), a complex carbohydrate (like brown rice, oatmeal or sweet potatoes) and healthy sources of fats (like avocado, eggs or nuts), said Dr. Cecilia Cordova Vallejos, a sports medicine physiatrist at Johns Hopkins Medicine.
Having a snack about 30 minutes before your workout will also give you an energy boost — especially if you’re doing moderate or high-intensity exercise for longer than 90 minutes, Dr. Cordova Vallejos said. She recommended a protein bar or even just an energy gel packet because they are easy on the stomach. Dr. Gulati suggested a banana or a piece of your favorite fruit.
Once you’re done with your workout, aim to consume protein — ideally 20 to 40 grams within two hours, the International Society of Sports Nutrition recommends — to help support muscle growth and recovery. A can of tuna, a chicken breast or three scrambled eggs with cheese would each fall within that range.
The timing of your meals may also depend on your health or fitness objectives. If you have a condition like diabetes where you must manage your blood sugar levels, the recommendations are a little more nuanced. Some research suggests that those with Type 2 diabetes may be better off having breakfast before they exercise. For people with Type 1 diabetes, the suggestions may be different, Dr. Kanaley added. Some research suggests, for instance, that fasting before a moderate or high-intensity morning workout can be safe and potentially even preferable for people with Type 1 diabetes, depending on your glucose levels upon waking.

故填What。
故填to create。
故填was listed。
根据设空处上句“In 2006, the Puning Yingge Dance ________(list) among the first batch of national intangible cultural heritages in China. (2006年,普宁英歌被列入中国首批国家级非物质文化遗产名录。)”设空处前后句之间是转折关系,应用however,位于句首,首字母应大写。故填However。
故填its。
故填down。
设空处为谓语,由so far可知应该用现在完成时,主语 some villages,谓语用复数,故填have begun。

not…but… 故填but。

The old lady completely forgot all about the money. When the three gave the money back to the old woman, she was so touched that she gave them $1,000 as a reward for their good deed. The friends couldn’t have been happier with their choice.
