The 4 Best Traditional Festivals to Experience in Spain
San Fermín
The first official celebration of San Fermín took place in 1591. San Fermín is a larger local festival, taking place in the northern city of Pamplona for a week in early July. The bull runs are part of the festival. Each morning throughout the festival, participants and bulls take to the streets in an exciting race to the bull ring, where a bullfight will take place later in the day.
Tomatina Tomato Fight
It’s said that the festival started in 1945. Every year, on the last Wednesday in August, thousands of people come to the streets of the tiny town of Bu ol to take part in the world’s biggest tomato fight. Participants must buy a ticket, which includes travel to Bu ol from one of several larger cities in order to participate.
Christmas
You may think of European wintertime magic, charming Christmas markets and holiday lights twinkling throughout the streets. However, Spain’s pleasant Mediterranean climate and plentiful sunshine make it a much better choice compared with colder places around the same time of year. Spanish families typically get together for a long, hearty dinner on Christmas Eve, with plenty of after-dinner drinks and conversation for hours.
Semana Grande
Semana Grande is one of the most important traditional festivals in northern Spain. This large festival takes place every August in one of the region’s largest cities, Bilbao. Two main attractions are the giant puppets parade and a variety of concerts, with performances ranging from rock and pop to classical and jazz.

3. What do Tomatina Tomato Fight and Semana Grande have in common

A talented 10-year-old Oklahoma City schoolboy, Samuel Henderson, recently went viral on social media for the video of his various birdcalls at his school talent show. The video has gained over three million views! Even, Samuel’s bird sounds are mistaken for those of actual birds by birdcall apps.
Samuel shares that his interest began when he was six, when he tried imitating (模仿) the sound of a beautiful black bird. Samuel says that this happened during a trip to the zoo, when after being followed by the bird, and interacting (互动) with it, he told his parents that he could talk to birds. Ever since, Samuel has been addicted to the sounds that birds make. “Well, for some reason, all of a sudden, I just got into birds. And I love their unique (独特的) calls.”
When he decides to learn a new birdcall, Samuel walks into nature and listens carefully, before memorizing the call, and practising again and again. He also enjoys using the Merlin Bird app, a free app to help know about birds. He spends most of his time in practising hard. Samuel also keeps himself busy passing on some of his birdcalling skills to his classmates. He is happy to share his bird sounds with the world. And this talented schoolboy wants to become an ornithologist (鸟类学家) and study birds one day.
Samuel’s mom, Lori Henderson, is proud of her son’s unique talents. She says, “He’s made us look at the world in a different view and see the wonderful things that he can do.” She suggests that the family should develop children’s special interests and not hold them back of what they love.

There’s an old saying that an elephant never forgets. And there is a lot of truth in that. Facts show that elephants remember watering holes that they have visited years ago and even other elephants that they have not seen in a long time. A new study shows that elephants can remember the scent (气味) of their previous caregivers.
The study aimed to see if elephants would be able to recall these humans that they interacted with. The study was conducted at Lower Saxony’s Serengeti Park in Hodenhagen, Germany. The subjects, Bibi and Panya, two female Asian elephants, had moved to the wildlife park from a zoo in Berlin about 13 years before the study. They had no contact with their previous zoo keepers. The researchers contacted the elephant’s three previous male zoo keepers in the Berlin zoo and asked them to participate by wearing T-shirts for eight hours, which would be used for scent stimulus (刺激). In addition, the men were recorded saying short sentences and they were photographed.
In the experiment, the researchers set up two pieces of equipment that were next to each other outside the enclosure (围场). On one piece of equipment, stimulus was presented from a previous caregiver and on the other, stimulus from an unknown person was shown. The elephants could not reach the equipment with their trunks but they repeatedly tried to. The behavior of the elephants was filmed. The researchers believed that Bibi and Panya would reach out more often to the stimuli of their previous keepers.
While more research is needed with a larger number of test subjects to confirm the results, this is still a very important study for zoos around the world. A stable relationship (关系) between elephants and humans is important for the health of elephants.
8. What can we know about elephants from paragraph 1
A. They have strong feelings. B. They have a special sense of smell.
C. They have sharp sight. D. They have a very good memory.
9. What were the previous zoo keepers asked to do
A. Visit the two elephants often. B. Wear T-shirts for eight hours.
C. Talk about the two elephants. D. Offer pictures with elephants.
10. What did the elephants reach with their trunks in the experiment
A. The T-shirt from an unknown person. B. The researchers taking pictures.
C. The T-shirt from a previous zoo keeper. D. The former zoo keeper standing by.
11. What can be inferred about the study from the last paragraph
A. It is limiting. B. It is challenging. C. It is creative. D. It is accessible.
D
Being able to know an earthquake before it happens is the final goal for seismologists (地震学家) around the world. Now, thanks to cellphone technology, that goal has become a reality. The United States Geological Survey has created an earthquake early warning system, ShakeAlert, a phone app that can tell its users an incoming earthquake.
The app gets its data from two places. The first is more than 700 machines that detect (检测) the shaking in the earth located throughout the United States. The second is user information from phones. All phones have devices which detect when a phone is being moved. When all the data from all the phone users in a given area is gathered, the app can find out when an earthquake is about to happen, and send out warning via radio waves. Radio waves are quicker than seismic waves.
Though the early warning system is very useful, it is not a complete solution. As National Geographic reports, the warning for most people will come only a few seconds before the quake hits, and people close to the origin of the quake will get almost no warning at all. Forecasting (预测) earthquakes is still a very young field. “Like weather forecasting 100 years ago,” said Zhe Jia, a geophysicist, “there is still a long way to go before we can forecast earthquakes as well as we can forecast weather today.”
Still, having these systems in place is a step forward. Having even a few seconds’ warning to take shelter in the event of an earthquake can mean the difference between injury and health, life and death.
12. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the app
A. Its main benefits. B. Its working process. C. Its user guide. D. Its user information.
13. What is Zhe Jia’s opinion about forecasting earthquakes
A. It has a long way to go. B. It is achievable very soon.
C. It has taken a big step. D. It is as good as weather forecasting.
14. What is the author’s attitude to the early warning system
A. Concerned. B. Curious. C. Disappointed. D. Supportive.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. The harm of earthquakes. B. An earthquake warning system.
C. The goal of seismologists. D. Tips on preventing earthquakes.

On a windy spring day, a little girl named Emily took her favorite kite to the park. The kite was a beautiful butterfly-shaped one that her grandfather had made for her. She ran across the grass, letting the kite fly higher and higher into the blue sky.
Suddenly, a strong wind caught the kite and broke the string (线). Emily watched in horror as her beloved kite disappeared over the trees. She searched everywhere in the park, but it was nowhere to be found. Heartbroken, she went home and told her grandfather what had happened.
Her grandfather told her they would look for it together the next day. Meanwhile, the kite had landed on the roof of an old, abandoned (被人遗弃的) house at the edge of the town. A curious boy named Jack, who was exploring the area, saw the kite. He climbed up to the roof and picked it up.
Jack noticed the name “Emily” written on the kite. He decided to find the owner. He asked around the neighborhood and finally found Emily’s house. When he knocked on the door and returned the kite to Emily, her face lit up with joy. She thanked Jack and invited him to fly the kite with her.
From that day on, Emily and Jack became good friends. They often flew the kite together in the park. One day, a kite-flying competition was announced to be held in the town. Emily was excited and eager to participate, and of course, Jack was right by her side. They spent days preparing their butterfly-shaped kite. When the day of the competition arrived, the park was filled with people and all kinds of kites.
The wind was kind of strong that day, but Emily and Jack worked together, holding on tightly to the string, trying to make the kite fly steadily higher and higher. However, a sudden stronger wind blew, challenging all the kites in the sky.

【答案】
The wind was so strong that suddenly the string of the kite of Emily and Jack was broken. Quickly, the kite was carried away by the strong wind, Emily’s heart jumping into her throat. Her eyes widened in horror and she let out a cry, “Oh, no! Our kite!” Jack was equally anxious. But then Jack took a deep breath and tried to calm himself. “We can’t just let it go. Let’s follow it,” he said. Immediately, they rushed to action, searching for their kite. They ran across the grassy field, their eyes fixed on the colorful kite that was getting farther and farther. They ran after it, not stopping for a second.
After hours of search, they finally spotted the lost kite landing on a tree branch at the top. Jack shouted with joy, “There it is! We’ve found it!” Emily looked up at the butterfly-shaped kite, full of relief. Jack started to climb the tree carefully. Emily watched nervously from below, her heart pounding. Jack reached out his hand and gently freed the kite from the branch. With big smiles on their faces, they walked back home, the rescued kite in their hands, already planning their next flying adventure. Although they didn’t win the competition, they won the day for their teamwork and friendship.
