Brief introduction about the four classics
A Dream of Red Mansions is an encyclopedia(百科全书) of Chinese feudal(封建的) society, written by Cao Xueqin in Qing Dynasty. It follows the rise and decline of the Jia Family and tells the love tragedy among feudal nobles（贵族）, Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai. The classic novel is remarkable not only for its multidimensional characters, but also for its detailed observations of the life and social structures of 18th-century Chinese society.
Water Margin, set in the Song dynasty, tells of how a group of 108 outlaws（逃犯） gathers at Mount Liang (or Liangshan Marsh) to form a sizable army before they are eventually granted amnesty（大赦） by the government and sent on campaigns to resist foreign invaders and suppress（镇压） rebel forces. It has introduced to readers many of the best-known characters in Chinese literature, such as Wu Song, Lin Chong and Lu Zhishen.
Journey to the West, based on the actual pilgrimage undertaken by Xuanzang, comprises fantasy and adventue stories. The author, Wu Chengen, created numerous distinctive characters including a great variety of supernatural animals and particularly, the three disciples of Xuanzang who are Sun Wukong(Monkey King), Zhu Bajie(Pigsy), and Sha Wujing(Sandy). Of the three, the Monkey King is by far the most popular.Today the Monkey King stories are part of Chinese folk and literary tradition. And the novel itself is widely celebrated as a brilliant literary masterwork of both enlightenment and entertainment.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms which was written in the 14th century, is a well-known Chinese historical novel. This piece of literature is based on the history of the Three Kingdoms period and depicts the wars between the states of Wei, Shu, and Wu from the latter part of the 2nd century AD to the second half of the 3rd century AD. Although most of these figures and incidents are based on real history, they are romanticized and dramatized to varying degrees. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is generally recognized as a literary masterpiece. Since its publication, this novel has continuously attracted generations of readers and had a widespread and long-lasting impact on Chinese culture.
