… At first sight, the overall scene of life in the capital city appears peaceful and cheerful. However some critics suggest that on closer inspection, the painting actually exposes serious political and social problems.

There are some less obvious indicators of trouble too. For example, in the centre of the scroll, a boat is in danger of crashing into the bridge.These sorts of details point to a crisis developing in the city. In fact, the Northern Song Dynasty was in decline by this stage. About twenty years after the painting was completed, it was overthrown.

Mr. Zhang Zeduan, it's a great honor to have this conversation with you. We are all very curious about how you created the masterpiece "Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival". Could you tell us how you started this grand creation?
Well, I had lived in Bianjing for many years and was deeply touched by the prosperity and vitality of this city. I walked through the streets, markets, and docks every day, observing all kinds of people. Then the idea of depicting the whole picture of the capital city emerged in my mind, and thus I began this long creative journey.
What efforts did you make in collecting materials?
I spent a lot of time strolling around the city, carefully noting every detail, from the shop signs on the street to the behaviors of pedestrians on the bridge, from the boats coming and going in the river to the rural scenery in the suburbs. These vivid scenes were the source of my creation.
There must have been many challenges during the creation process, right?
Indeed. For such a magnificent scene, it was really not easy to achieve a reasonable layout, vivid characters, and precise details. I repeatedly considered the composition of the picture, striving to show the charm of the capital city and the rhythm of life. Every line and every color was carefully thought out.
What was your original intention in creating this painting?
I hoped to preserve the prosperity of Bianjing, so that future generations could know the glorious scene of our dynasty and the lives of the people. This was my greatest motivation for creation.
Why is the original scroll not often displayed to the public?
Because it is extremely delicate.

Because it is so delicate, museums may choose not to display some masterpieces to protect them from damage, but at the same time the public wish to have more access to them.
How can we deal with this issue?
