Churchill, a small rural town in Manitoba, Canada, has an unusual relationship with its neighboring polar bears. The
presence of these animals has become a major draw for tourists, which in turn has saved the local economy after
the closure of a military base.
The bears are increasingly entering the town in search of food. The melting sea ice, their normal hunting ground, is believed to be the cause. Geoff York from Polar Bears International explains that more bears are visible on land for longer periods, and they' re taking greater risks, approaching people more closely.
Despite the potential danger, it's been over 10 years since a polar bear attack in Churchill. The town has a warning
system, guards, and even a polar bear jail to ensure safety. Sergeant Ian Van Nest,a conservation officer, guards the
streets during polar bear season. When he encounters a group of tourists watching a bear, he makes sure they maintain a
safe distance. These safety measures, along
with the unique appeal of the polar bears, have made Churchill an attractive destination for tourists.
Visitors have been crucial to Churchill's survival. After the military base closed in the 1970s, the town's population dropped. But the flood of polar bear tourists, spending an average of $5,000 per visit, has added over $7 million annually to the local economy.
“We' re used to bears so when you see one you don't start to tremble,” Churchill's mayor MikeSpence said. “It's
their area too. It's important how the community lives with bears and wildlife in general to really get along.” The former military base had a rocket launch area, which seemed to keep bears away. When it closed, the bears started entering the town more often. So, province officials“put together a polar bear alert program to make sure the community members are protected,” said Spence.
24. What caused bears to enter the town
A. Their habit of taking risks. B. The presence of other animals.
C. Their desire to approach people. D. The reduction of their habitat.
25. Which best describes the protective measures
A. Costly. B. Productive. C. Everlasting. D. Time-consuming.
26. Why is bear tourism important to the town
A. It can boost its population. B. It can promote cultural exchanges.
C. It can bring economic benefits. D. It can improve people's living standard.
27. What is Spence's opinion about the bears in the town
A. They are coexisting with humans. B. Their number is increasing.
C. They are making people frightened. D. Their living area is expanding.
C
As families gather around the table this holiday season, many will eagerly fill their plates with proteins, grains,
and of course, desserts. Vegetables are often a harder sell, especially the more bitter varieties. Some people even turn up their noses at the fruits which have a sour taste, as well.
In recent years, not eating bitter or sour produce has caused scientists to step up efforts to adjust the plants’ DNA to reduce the enzymes(酶) that cause these tastes. The result is less bitter greens, sweeter pineapples, and other crop
varieties that have recently entered the marketplace or are about to.
The compounds that create the sharp flavors of vegetables are what make them so beneficial, says Michael Miller, a food scientist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. For example, the bitter-tasting chemicals rich in the vegetables have numerous antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, which offer a range of health benefits, such as improving immune function, preventing infections and slowing aging.
Food scientists involved in these efforts insist that some health-promoting chemicals are lost, but the increased
consumption of more tasty fruits and vegetables makes up for it. However, plant scientists think it would be wise to find a balance for these fruits and vegetables where both sweet and acidic flavors remain. This is important not only for humans, but for the survival of the crops as well. Were bitter compounds to be removed entirely, as the plants grow in
the fields, the insects will also be eager to eat a lot more.
As gene editing makes it ever easier to change a crop’ s flavors, more changes to the tastes of vegetables and
fruits are in the coming years. But how these changes truly balance flavour and health remains a challenge.
28. What does the underlined phrase“turn up their noses at” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Smell out. B. Show dislike for.
C. Approve of. D. Look forward to.
29. What is the goal of changing the DNA of crops
A. To help them grow fast. B. To enrich their nutrients.
C. To appeal to consumers. D. To improve their immunity.
30. What is the food scientists' attitude to gene editing
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Negative. D. Skeptical.
31. What does the text mainly convey
A. Customers gain more health benefits due to gene editing.
B. Customers prefer less bitter vegetables due to gene editing.
C. Gene editing increases the production but damages the crops.
D. Gene editing improves the flavor but reduces health benefits.
D
A new study reported at the recent Alzheimer's Association International Conference inPhiladelphia,
Pennsylvania suggests that particles(颗粒) found in wildfire smoke could increase the risk of getting dementia. Dementia is a progressive brain condition that causes thinking problems and other health issues. There are several forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’ s disease(阿尔兹海默症).
The study centered on a substance(物质) called PM2.5, a mixture of small, solid particles and water droplets found in the air. PM2.5 particles are about 30 times smaller than a human hair. They can be breathed into the lungs and then move on to the blood stream. Existing evidence shows this kind of pollution — from traffic, factories and fires — can cause or worsen heart disease. The new study finds it could also increase the risks of dementia.
Researchers from the University of Washington carried out the study. They examined health records of
1.2 million older adults in Southern California between 2009 and 2019. The scientists used air quality monitoring and other data to estimate how much PM2.5 was released from wildfire smoke or other ways over three years. The study found the risk of being diagnosed with dementia increased about 21 percent for every 1 microgram increase in the concentration of wildfire particles. That compared with a 3 percent increased risk for every 3 microgram increase in non-wildfire particles.
It is not clear why this difference exists. But with wildfires increasing, this issue needs more study, said Alzheimer’ s Association chief science officer Maria Carrillo. She said it is especially important because the
risk of Alzheimer’ s — the most common form of dementia — is higher for lower-income populations
who may have a harder time avoiding unhealthy air. Carrillo noted that health warnings urge staying indoors when air quality is poor. But she added, “They have few options. Most of them have no alternative but to
labor outside.”
32. What can be learned about PM2.5 from paragraph 2
A. It can raise Alzheimer's risks. B. It is the main substance in the air.
C. It damages people's blood stream. D. It is the leading factor of heart disease.
33. How did the researchers carry out the study
A. By making a random survey. B. By observing the air conditions.
C. By comparing the collected data. D. By conducting experiments in the lab.
34. Why are people with low incomes more likely to get Alzheimer’ s
A. Because they refuse to make options.
B. Because they are unaware of the risk.
C. Because they are warned to stay indoors.
D. Because they usually work in the open air.
35. What is the author's purpose in writing this text
A. To clarify the methods of the research.
B. To state new findings on wildfire smoke.
C. To illustrate the significance of air quality.
D. To analyze the cause of Alzheimer's disease.

Eunice had loved music for as long as she could remember. When she was a baby, she would clap and sing along to the tunes on TV shows with delightful enthusiasm. When she saw some musical notes written in a magazine, she could sing them all. Her parents were amazed that she could read music at such a young age. So her father decided to gift her a piano to nurture her talent. Overjoyed,Eunice excelled in her piano playing.
Eunice's mum, a conservative lady, has strict rules and unique insights into music. Classical music, to her, is a blend of wisdom and history. She believed it had the power to nourish the soul and deepen one’ s understanding of the world. In contrast, she thought pop music lacked the lasting depth and beauty of classical music. Her mother discouraged her from playing that kind of music. “Jazz and blues are wicked and lead to things like dancing!” Her mum would say with a serious look on her face.
As Eunice grew older, she enjoyed diverse music from radios, record players, and street musicians. It all sounded amazing, and how could such wonderful music possibly be wicked Her father, understanding her love for music, encouraged her to play all kinds of music when her mother was not home. He kept watching out of the
front window to see if her mother was coming back.
“Here she comes! Stop playing!” he would whisper urgently whenever he spotted her mother approaching. Playing this diverse music became their cherished secret.
After years of studying, her family found it difficult to support her musical education. Fortunately, her piano teacher Miss Mazzy came to her aid and collected donations from the people of the town. The generous neighbours readily supported her, providing her with the funds she needed. To express her gratitude, Miss Mazzy arranged
for Eunice to perform a special concert.
The girl was both excited and nervous. She worked especially hard to polish up twelve pieces, including several pop music pieces. However, she was afraid that her mother would come and find out her secret love for pop music during the concert.

Text 10
Good evening, and welcome to the Channel 4 evening news. Well, it's been a very exciting day for news. Our home team won the basketball finals for the first time in 15 years. Experts were predicting that it would be a long time until we saw another win because the managers were not suited for the team, but thanks to the stars on our team, they got the job done. Also, our town has been selected as the next home base for a major company. Amazon has agreed to build its main office and two of its warehouses near our city. Experts expect the plan to result in 15,000 new jobs in the area. About 5000 of those jobs will be high-paying office jobs. There was some concern about the plan because politicians said the city was paying too much in tax relief to the company. But other people have said that the tax relief is a very good investment in our future. Time,of course, will tell. In the meantime, Amazon plans to start hiring people for its offices and warehouses as soon as next year.Ground will be broken on the new buildings next week, and next month the leaders of Amazon are due here for a visit. The city is having a big celebration tomorrow at the main center.
