Oxford Street
Oxford Street’s festive lights are a treat for the eyes this year. Covent Garden
A visit to Covent Garden will certainly get you in the festive spirit this year, with the central London destination offering a whole lot of lights—from 11 am until midnight every day until January 3. Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine—with over 40 different varieties there.

Curbelo was born and raised in Sant Clara, a small Cuban (古巴的) city. Later, she moved to Havana to continue her studies and played in popular Cuban bands .
When first Argentine restaurant in Shanghai opened up, she came into China.
It gave Chinese audiences a chance to enjoy her music. “I hesitated (犹豫) in the beginning because I didn’t think there was room for Latino (拉美) culture in a country with so much traditional culture in China,” she admitted, quickly adding, “But the advice to be a violinist in a traditional Cuban group seemed like a fantastic chance to get to know this beautiful country. So I came to China at last.”
This musical journey took her all across China-touring, recording and even producing music for famous bands. Among her most memorable moments, she listed the opening of the World Expo (世博会) 2010 in Shanghai, where she had the opportunity to perform with the famous Italian musician Andrea Bocelli and other foreign artists.
A musician’s week is never normal. In addition to a busy schedule, each day is different from the last. Luckily, there is some free time when she can do something she likes. In her free time she always records or visits the shows of other musicians.

Parkinson’s (帕金森) is a progressive brain disease which leads to shaky hands and slow movement, and there is no cure. Tai Chi, a traditional Chinese martial art that combines (结合) slow, gentle movements with deep breathing and relaxation, may be an effective means of reducing the suffering. Recently, the researchers say that those who practised the martial art twice a week had fewer complications (并发症) and better quality of life than those who didn’t. Experts say the findings back up previous studies on the benefits of exercise for those with Parkinson’s.
The study, from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, monitored the health of hundreds of Parkinson’s patients for up to five years. One group of 147 people practised regular Tai Chi while another group of 187 did not. The researchers found that the disease progressed more slowly in the Tai Chi group on measurements of symptoms (症状), movement and balance. This group also saw fewer falls, less back pain and dizziness, with memory and concentration problems also lower than in the other group. At the same time, sleep and quality of life continuously improved.
Prof. Alastair Noyce, professor in neurology and neuroepidemiology at Queen Mary University of London, called it “an important study”—the positive effects on aspects of motor (运动的) and non-motor functions are impressive — but said there were limitations in its design, and more tests were needed.
“We already recommend Tai Chi, as well as other forms of exercise, but understanding which forms of exercise are most beneficial is an important goal to improve the long-term management of patients,” he said.

As we all know, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Now scientists have given us another warning: spending too much time on smart phones or computers makes you dull too.
“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices (设备) in education but ignore the costs,” said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.” Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spent about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smart phones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.
Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn’t show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us.
“Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction.” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.
Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2-16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising: Their children could use a tablet (平板电脑) (59%) and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces (鞋带) (53%)! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”.

And next, I’d like to present the following student artists who have been awarded the chance to show their projects and give a short speech to the audience. And finally, Michael Watts will present some mixed-media art created with the computer. Here, at RISD, we consider all art to be an expression of oneself, one’s passion, and the experience of life.
