Napping (打盹) at noon is popular. A nap at midday keeps people more energetic in the afternoon, so whether it’s summer or winter, most workers take a nap break.
A study recently says that compared with Europeans and North Americans, Chinese people take much more time in napping. In companies abroad, workers don’t have much napping time. Some Western companies start work later, sometimes at 10 o’clock, so people are able to wake up naturally in the morning. In such a case, a noon nap is certainly not necessary.
Researchers believe napping may be also caused by different eating habits. Food in European countries and America is mostly more meat and eggs than vegetables, while Chinese food comes mainly from farming. People in the north eat wheaten food (面食) and those in the south eat rice, which has a lot of glucose (葡萄糖). Normally we Chinese get on a full stomach after lunch, so the glucose-rich Chinese diet raises the level of blood glucose (血糖). It leads to sleepiness.
These ideas sound reasonable. However, they do not work on me. Even on days of eating a Western diet, instead of wheaten food or rice, I must take a nap at a quiet place.
According to an American sleep researcher, noon-time napping is a kind of self-protection, that helps to keep people energetic in the afternoon. That is to say, Western people need to take a noon nap, too. Taking a nap for less than 30 minutes is always a healthy habit for all people.
Now a napper is found everywhere: Customers napping on a sofa, on a chair, or on a seat in the train station. I fully understand them. But maybe your napping places make a difference. Those who nap in public places discomfit passers-by, which is not socially accepted. But a person who naps in a private space is regarded as a polite napper.

There was another family in town. They had a lot of children. I always watched them and admired them. They were kind, warm and close—everything I wished my family could be.
Twenty years later, I went back to attend a wedding (婚礼). As I walked back to the small town, memories came back to me. I remembered the warm, kind smiles of that family. At noon, my child and I went to a restaurant. When I was looking around for seats, I heard a familiar voice call my name. I turned around and he was there, the father of that family. We chatted for a bit. I pointed out my happy child to him. At that moment, I realized I was raising my boy in a way I had seen him raise his own children so long ago. Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking s x kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area. Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that It is still mysterious. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Whether yellow, red or white, the onion is a vegetable that you may not know well. The list of its uses in cooking is endless. People have used onions to add flavor (味道) to their foods for thousands of years. Besides onions’ great taste, they are very good for you. They have special chemicals (化学物质) that improve your ability to fight off sickness and you have fewer chances of getting a disease.
No matter how good onions are for you, it is difficult to cut an onion without your eyes filling with tears! When you cut into an onion, irritating (刺激性的) chemicals inside the onion will get into the air. They touch you whole eyes and cause pain. Your eyes make tears to wash away the chemicals and protect your eyes.
Luckily, cooks and scientists have discovered some ways to keep you from crying when you cut up onions:
●Cut the onion under running water. The water will wash away the chemicals before they can reach your eyes.
●Use a fan to blow air over the onion as you cut it. The air will blow the chemicals away from your eyes.
●Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting. This helps make the chemicals in the onion slowly, so they may not ever reach your eyes.
If you try out these good ideas and still cry while cutting onions, don’t worry. Scientists think if you cut more onions, your body will become more resilient to the onion’s chemicals. So the tears will not last long. If you think about how healthy onions are, you might even call those tears “happy tears”.

Summer vacation became very boring when my best friends left for summer camp. Getting up later each morning, I was spending more and more time with my smartphone and the TV. But when my mom told me that I couldn’t use my smartphone, I felt like I had lost my world. I had nothing to do, circling from room to room all day.
One day, Mom asked me if I would accept a challenge to follow the same ant for ten minutes.
“What’s so difficult about that ” I asked.
“You might be surprised.” Mom smiled.
“Is there a prize for the challenge ” I asked.
“Of course. But if you lose, you’ll have to do some housework.” To win the challenge, I needed a special ant so that I could follow him easily. My eyes were fixed on a big ant carrying a leaf. “There he goes, Mom.” She set the timer for 10 minutes.
For the first time, the ant ran all the way to the gate. “Perfect!” I thought, Then, he came to a wide crack (裂缝), he tried to cross, but failed. Then he disappeared into the grass. My heart sank as I saw myself cleaning the bathroom. Then surprisingly, he climbed out carrying a piece of leaf and was back on his way.
For the last three minutes, he dropped his leaf as if he would disappear again. To my surprise, he placed the leaf across the crack and walked across it to the other side like a bridge. Wow! Last month, all the science teachers at my school decided to set up a biology fair. All the students made a project for the two-day fair last week. I was in a group with my best friends Wei Ling, Julia and Pedro. All the groups worked hard on their projects for two weeks before the fair.
My group’s project was to find out what happens to our teeth when we drink sugary drinks. We used three eggs because their shells (壳) are similar to the outside of our teeth. We put them into different glasses with cola (可乐), apple juice and water. Then we checked how the colour changed. The other groups from my class worked on a lot of interesting projects, too. One group showed how important light is to growing plants. Another group stopped an apple from turning brown by using lemon juice.
We all worked hard and at the end of the two weeks, our teachers chose the top four projects. They gave a prize to each of them. Though my group didn’t get a prize, it’s not that important. I was just p... because we took part. What’s more, we had a great time together.

Life is fun but it can also be challenging. Sometimes life can disappoint us and fail to provide what we are hoping for. That’s just the way it is. But sometimes the problems that trouble us are from our own minds, so maybe it’s time to stop finding fault (缺点) with other people, bad luck, or whatever. How can we change the way we live for the better
Think about things in another way. Your teacher gives you another role in the school play instead of the one that you really want and that you try hardest for. It doesn’t mean your teacher doesn’t like you. The role your teacher gives you suits you better. So just try your best to play it well.
No one is perfect, and that includes you! So don’t expect life to always work out the way you think it should. If you don’t reach your own expectations, be kind to yourself. If you’re always looking for perfection in yourself, you are sure to be upset. Be positive and wear a big smile to life! It can make you feel happy and cheerful.
Don’t dwell on the past. It’s meaningless if you always think about the past. “I should have made a greater effort for that test.” or “I wish I hadn’t said those silly things.” There’s nothing you can do to change any of that. Learn from it, and make sure you don’t make the same mistakes again.
Sometimes, life doesn’t go exactly the way you want it to. Try to change the way you live.

Want to sleep under the sea The company Planet Ocean has plans for an exciting underwater hotel.
The size
The hotel won’t be large, with only 12 guest rooms, and a restaurant. Guests will get to the hotel in a lift—so no getting wet! The hotel will be 10 metres under the ocean and it will be fixed to the sea bed. This way, it will not move too far. Because it won’t be very deep under the water, the sun will shine down and provide light.
The service
The hotel will have clear plastic walls. Guests will be able to clearly see the sea and all the sea animals in their rooms. They will almost get the feeling that they are swimming in the ocean. The rooms will have a shower, TV and even the Internet. The restaurant will serve good meals. Planet Ocean wants to encourage people to eat less fish, so guests won’t find any on the menu. What’s more surprising is that it will be silent in the hotel, so guests will have to imagine the sound of the ocean around them.
The design
The hotel won’t be cheap to build and it won’t be cheap to stay in. But the designers are especially proud of the fact that it will be environmentally friendly. It will use electricity, of course, but it will produce its own, and won’t disturb (打扰) ocean life at all. Do you often ask questions Children are known for wanting answers to many questions, because curiosity (好奇心) is part of human nature. Books and TV shows often depend on curiosity. People keep reading or watching because they want to find out what happens.
As we know, curiosity provides many advantages. Many of history’s greatest discoveries were made by curious people. People wondered how things worked and how work could be done more quickly. Thanks to their curiosity, people now know much about the world and have useful technology to help them. Even if you don’t plan to be an inventor or researcher, curiosity can still help you in the classroom. If you develop the curiosity of learning, classes will become more interesting. What will you do if you’re not already curious Luckily, curiosity is a skill that can be improved. Often, the more you learn about a subject, the more interesting it becomes. To improve your curiosity, get information from as many sources (来源) as possible when you learn about something. At the same time, read all kinds of books, watch or listen to speeches and ask questions. Don’t always get information in the same way. Instead, learn to understand the facts that different people know.
Don’t assume you already know everything. Instead, search for other possibilities and opinions. Remember, everyone knows something that you don’t know. Find out what it is, and ask about it. This lets you learn something and makes the other people happy by letting them show off their knowledge. Let’s try to become people who are full of curiosity.

Mom: It’s not nice to hate, dear.
Ella: I don’t understand them at all! I’m just not a clever girl.
Mom: Everyone learns at a different speed, Ella.
Ella: I don’t even know why I have to learn them. I’m never going to need a fraction in my whole life.
Mom: Let’s not care about fractions now. Would you like to help me make cookies
Ella: OK.
Mom: Here is the sugar, milk and butter. First, put one full cup of sugar into the pan.
Ella: All right… Is this OK, Mom

Life has darkness sometimes, so we have to give out light by ourselves to make us find our way in the darkness.
When I was in primary school, I made up my decision that I must go to the best junior high school in my city. But things don’t always go as planned. I had poor grades and found it hard to even finish my basic homework.
My classmates laughed at me when we were talking about our dreams. “You will never make it, Serena,” they said. My teacher came to stop them. But after she heard about what they had made fun of, she tried to tell me how difficult it would be to get into that school too. “That was all my students’ dream,” she said. “But only a few of them have realized it.”
I didn’t want to give up. I studied hard with my might. I looked through the library books for more answers to the same question. I stayed up late to solve math problems. I read English novels to increase my vocabulary (词汇). I used all my pocket money to buy exercise books to rich my knowledge.
All the hard work paid off. I entered my dream school finally. Now, every morning, I dress up in my new school uniform and leave home proudly. I have met fantastic friends and patient teachers in my new school.
Sometimes we have to be our own light to lead our whole life.

Emily and George have lived next door as long as they can remember. When they were little, they used to play together. They were good friends, though they sometimes fought over toys or quarreled about what game they would play. As they grew older, they played together less. Emily preferred to be with girls, and George, boys, of course. When they were about fifteen, they almost stopped speaking to each other, not because they disagreed with each other about anything, but just because they belonged to different groups. Emily was developing into a very good student, while George was more interested in sports. Emily began to study French, and she liked French so much that she began to write plays in French. She also liked TV programs, and for some reason, she enjoyed watching football games very much. Her mother used to say, “Emily, I’ve never heard of a girl who likes football as much as you do.” Mrs. Mason simply did not approve of (赞成) her daughter’s interest. Football, she felt, was for men and boys.
While Emily was working on her French lessons or watching football games on TV, George was working for his father in his store after school. He liked selling things to people. When George wasn’t working at the store, he would like to be with a group of his friends who were organizing a football team.
One day, when George was going home in the afternoon, he looked in the window of Emily’s living room and he saw that she was watching a football game on TV. He walked up and knocked at the door. Emily was surprised to see him, but she asked him to come in, and they watched the rest of the game together. Emily and George are good friends again. They still have different ideas about things sometimes, but they agree with each other that football is the world’s best game. Mrs. Mason doesn’t seem to disapprove of her daughter’s interest in football as much as she used to.

Feng Boyao and Meng Shuqi found that their city library didn’t have enough Braille books for blind people and many of the Braille books were out of date.
So, they teamed up to help the blind by fixing the problem. Feng and Meng both studied at No.37 Middle School in Taiyuan, Shanxi province. They invented a new kind of Braille reader. Their work won the first prize in a national competition aiming to nurture creative thinking by encouraging youths to solve social problems. The invention was also granted (授予) a national patent (专利). When connected to a computer, their Braille reader can turn words into raised dots (凸起的点). Blind people can read by touching the dots, which are magnets (磁铁). This is the first Braille reader that uses magnets.
“We found that today’s Braille readers are very difficult and expensive,” Feng said. “So, we decided to develop a user-friendly product, especially for young blind children from grades 1 to 3. Moreover, it only costs about 2000 yuan.”
After making their first device, Feng and Meng visited a school for the blind to get advice and improved it based on the students’ needs, like changing the size of the screen and the amount of space between the dots. “We hope the invention will be popularized (普及) in the future to help those blind people who can’t afford the Braille reader now,” Meng told Taiyuan News.
