Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
In the city center, firefighters quickly get ready when they hear the alarm. Within 60 seconds they are dressed and rushing to a burning building. Even though they know the floors might collapse and the ceilings could fall, they still have to go inside. One wrong decision might mean death.
Who would do a job like that Ask firefighter Sam Telfer. One month ago, he signed up for the job. He used to sit in an office of a software company, but now he is trained to break into rooms full of smoke and heat and come up with a rescue strategy.
“I wanted a job where I could be active, work with my hands, learn new practical skills, and face different challenges every day,” That’s quite an understatement (保守说法) to describe a career that requires you to keep a cool head while fighting against a fire. But Telfer says that flames (火焰) and nerves can be controlled in the same way: through continuous physical and mental training.
Telfer was a runner in college, but now he trains his lungs for dangerous situations instead of races. He has to climb hundreds of steps while wearing 34 kilograms of gear, like oxygen tanks. He also needs to carry unconscious people to safety. No matter what he’s doing, he has to control his breathing. Panic (恐慌) will only waste his limited air supply.
His survival depends on more than just being physically fit. Firefighters need a lot of mental preparation too. When they are not dealing with emergencies, they study many subjects like emergency medicine, structural design, and chemical reactions. They practice quickly assessing (评估) the changing conditions of a fire.
Shifting from a software expert to a first responder was a big change for Telfer. But he says, “I have never once felt that this isn’t the right job for me.” Even though danger might be waiting every day, his body and mind are trained to stay calm, even in the middle of a fierce fire.
1.Firefighters have to get ready within sixty seconds after hearing the alarm, don’t they
2.When did Sam Telfer become a firefighter
3.Where did Telfer work before becoming a firefighter
4.What physical training does a firefighter take Give an example.
5.How can a firefighter survive a big fire
6.Does Sam Telfer love the job as a firefighter Give your reason.

“I like photography because it captures amazing things that you might not see again,” Timmy Watter says. He takes pictures of flowers, sunsets, road signs and ancient buildings. But those photos don’t usually end up in a photo album or on his bedroom walls. Timmy sells them and donates the money to help fight lung cancer (肺癌).
When Timmy was five, he found out that his aunt Bella had lung cancer. He wanted to do something to help her. His first plan was to sell his photos from a vendor’s stand (小贩摊位) in front of his house. “My mum said it wouldn’t work because we were not on a busy street.” Timmy explains.
His next idea was to have an art show. Timmy decorated his home with candles, flowers and white lights. Then he arranged his photos. Timmy’s mum, Sara, remembers: “Everything was filled with photos, including our dining-room table and the living room.” Timmy’s friends, family, and teachers came to the show. He raised more than $300 for cancer research that night. “Aunt Bella was very happy and excited,” Timmy says.
After a local newspaper wrote a story about Timmy’s photos, a volunteer offered to help him set up a website called Camera for a Cure. As more and more people learned about his cause, Timmy began receiving invitations to sell his pictures at art galleries and charity events. Since then, his work has appeared in more than 20 shows. To prepare, he takes lots of photographs. His mum helps him print and frame (给……镶框) them. Then he gives each one a price and decides where it will be displayed. When Timmy is at a show, he greets each customer and talks about what he was thinking when he took his photos. And he always shares facts about lung cancer. Sometimes donations and sales are slow, but Timmy isn’t worried. “It doesn’t matter how much money we made because ________,” he says.
Timmy knows that finding a cure for lung cancer will take time and effort. So, Timmy will keep doing his part by taking and selling photos of the things he sees.
7.Timmy doesn’t usually put his photos in a photo album, does he
8.According to Timmy’s mum, why wouldn’t Timmy’s first plan work
9.Who helped Timmy raise money for cancer research in the first art show
10.How did Timmy’s mum help Timmy prepare for the art shows
11.What can be filled in the blank
12.What other creative ideas do you have for Timmy to help fight lung cancer

Just after 4:00 pm, Addy heard a strange noise. The lights in the museum flickered (闪烁) and then went out. Outside, the sidewalks were crowded, and buses were full. People were shouting, “Blackout! The power is out!”
“Oh no,” said Addy’s mom. “The subway won’t work.”
“How will we get back to Brooklyn by 5:30 for my audition (试镜) ” Addy cried.
Her mom held her hand, and they started walking in the hot August air. She pulled out her phone. “No service,” she sighed. “I hope your sister isn’t stuck underground. Zelda’s normally headed home by now,” Addy’s mom said, looking concerned.
By 5:00, Addy’s feet hurt from walking, but what bothered (使不安) her more was the worry in her head.
Addy and her mom searched for an empty taxi. After six blocks, they finally got one. Just then, Addy saw an elderly man waving his cane (手杖). Although she was eager to get home, Addy suggested giving the man their taxi.
As they kept walking, a man outside a pizza shop gave them free slices. Addy looked at her mom curiously. “No power means no refrigeration, microwaves, or ovens. If this blackout isn’t fixed, a lot of food will go bad.” Suddenly Addy’s headache got worse.
“I’m sure your audition wasn’t canceled,” Addy’s mom said when she saw Addy’s worried face. Addy’s feet hurt so much that she couldn’t even imagine dancing. Her head hurt too, but it wasn’t what her mom thought.
Addy took a bite of her pizza. She didn’t realize she was hungry. How long would the blackout last Would her family run out of food What about everyone else
They reached the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset. They were almost home.
That night, Addy’s family climbed the steps to the roof. This was something they did often, but tonight was special. They saw stars they had never noticed before shining over the bridge. It looked almost magical, like a bridge to a castle. They saw a long line of people still crossing, slowly heading home. Addy danced in the darkness under the stars, happy to be home, sweet home.

Recently, community canteens have become popular among young people.
At first, community canteens mostly served old people. As the elderly may face challenges in cooking, and many young people cannot cook, these canteens have become perfect places for the two generations (一代人) to become meal friends.
Getting cheap meals
For only 20 yuan, Fang Wenjing, who works in the training industry (行业) Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, ordered a well-balanced lunch at a community canteen m the city. It included a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a bowl of rice.
“The dishes have a home-cooked taste, just as I expected. The canteen is also clean,” said Fang.
Bringing more surprises
Community canteens meet the dining habits of young people in a number of ways. For example, the vegetarian (素食的) restaurants in Hangzhou have meals including a main dish, a bowl of rice, soup, fruit salad, and a side dish. Hu Yifan, head of the canteen, said 70 percent of its customers are young people.
A canteen at the Zhanongkou Community in Zhejiang province recently introduced “happiness mystery boxes”. They cost just 6 yuan but have one meat dish and a vegetarian dish. To keep what’s inside each box a surprise, stickers are placed over the see-through top to cover the “main dish”. The “mystery boxes” often sell out very quickly.
The canteen in Beijing’s Lugu Community in Shijingshan district even introduced self-service meals. The buffer-style (自助式的) dishes there are priced (定价) at just 2.48 yuan per 100 grams. This price is lower than the restaurants nearby. The canteen has attracted many customers in and out of the neighborhood.
“While it’s a community canteen, it can just as easily be described as a Western restaurant. It is beautifully designed. The environment is fantastic and super clean,” Dazhong Dianping user “Cuzhuangqieluoli 66” commented (评价) on one of the canteens.

20.Why did Fang Wenjing like the lunch at the community canteen
21.What do vegetarian meals in a community restaurant in Hangzhou include

Every Saturday night, Mama would count the money Papa brought home. “For the rent[1],” she would say, counting out the big silver pieces. “For the groceries[2],” she would say, counting out the smaller coins. “I need a notebook,” one of us would say. Mama would put aside some coins and we would watch with excitement. When Papa asked, “Is that all ” and Mama nodded, we would relax. Mama would smile and say, “We don’t have to go to the bank.” We were proud of Mama’s Bank Account. It made us feel warm and safe.
One day, Nels wanted to go to high school. “It will cost a little money,” he said. We gathered around the table and Mama took out the “Little Bank”, which we used for emergencies. Nels listed the costs and Mama counted the money. There wasn’t enough. “We don’t want to go to the bank,” Mama reminded. Nels offered to work after school and Papa decided to give up smoking. Now there was enough money. We were happy because we didn’t have to go to the bank.
Many things came from the Little Bank that year. Christine’s dress for the school play, my little sister’s operation…
That was twenty years ago.
Last year I sold my first story. I gave the check[3] to Mama and said, “Put it in your Bank Account.” I noticed how old Mama and Papa looked. Papa seemed shorter and Mama’s hair was silver.
“Tomorrow, you must go to the bank,” I told Mama.
“You will go with me ” she asked.
“You can do that! Just give the teller the check.”
Mama looked at me and said. “ ____ ”
I didn’t know how to answer. Mama said slowly, “It’s not good for little ones to be afraid—to not feel safe.”

As you probably know, the town council (议会) has got 1 million to spend in improving the town’s facilities for young people and we’re looking for great ideas on how to spend the money well. Post your ideas in the forum (论坛) below and let us know how we can make life better for you.
Here are some ideas.
There’s nothing for teenagers to do in this town, especially at night. Can we use the money to build a youth club Somewhere with a pool table and a table tennis table, perhaps. We need somewhere to play happily and hang out safely in the evenings. —Daisy, 15
I think the best use for the money is to build a playground in the town park. It should have lots of rides for the young kids. I’d like to have a skateboard park for a start and maybe if there is enough money, we can have a climbing wall, too. —Luke, 13
As I’m only 14, I can’t drive, so I go everywhere on my bike. But the roads are dangerous and many motorists drive too fast. How about spending the money in building more cycle lanes We could also put in more speed cameras and zebra crossings, too. This will make life safer for all our citizens, not just the young people. —Liz, 14
How about a big billboard at the entrance to the town that reads, “TEEN WARNING—there’s nothing to do here!” —Sadie, 16
This probably sounds like a boring idea, but can’t we use some of the money to buy more litter bins I feel ashamed of our town when I see much litter on the ground. We need to tidy up our town quickly! —Jack, 15
Our high street is full of empty shops because everyone just shops at the new shopping centre outside of town or online. Why don’t we use the money to turn some of these empty shops into an arts centre It can have studios where we can draw and paint or learn how to make films. We can also have a music studio where local bands can record music cheaply. —Alex, 17
31.How much money has the town council got
32.What do Daisy and Sadie think of the town
33.What does Luke want to have most in his idea
34.In Liz’s opinion, what should the money be spent in
35.Whose idea do you like best if you are an art lover
36.Why does the writer choose the six ideas which are all from the teenagers Give TWO reasons.
TCM wins the hearts of young people for its effectiveness.
Jin Ying, 25, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She took part in a three-month training course on acupuncture and tuina (针灸推拿) in the winter of 2023 at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Jin’s life has been different since the training. She changed her life habits after learning the Five Elements theory (五行学说). For example, she avoided sweating too much during exercise in winter because the cold of winter means people should slow down, according to TCM. For her, learning these skills and theories was not about becoming a TCM doctor but rather about accepting a new lifestyle.
She is not an unusual example of young people loving TCM. A survey by China Youth Daily showed that 93.3 percent of the 1,000 young people had tried different TCM treatments.
“I have seen a rising number of young people come to me for neck and back pains, which are usually related to the elderly,” said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang, a TCM hospital affiliated with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM “due to its effectiveness,” according to Ma.
Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different prescriptions (处方). “This is actually an advantage of TCM, rather than a shortcoming, as it can be a more accurate treatment for different patients,” Ma explained.
Younger age groups are welcoming TCM, and, at the same time, TCM is also benefiting young people. As Jin noted, “It helps young people understand Chinese medicine and learn why it is believed to be a treasure of our Chinese culture.”
37.Acupuncture and tuina 2023 is a training course, isn’t it
38.What did Jin learn about exercise in winter after the training
39.What’s the purpose for Jin’s learning the skills and theories of TCM
40.How do you understand the underlined sentence “She is… loving TCM” (in Para, 4)
41.Why does TCM treat the same illnesses with different prescriptions
42.What’s your opinion on TCM Show your reason(s).

An Unusual Garden
The old 1986 truck was a gift from his grandfather. It worked, but it used a lot of gas. Ian Cheney looked at his grandfather’s truck and thought of a farm. As in other large cities, there is not much space to grow food in New York. Yet Cheney wanted a vegetable garden. Many farmers in New York have found creative ways to grow vegetables, such as rooftop gardens, community gardens in old parking lots, and even a floating garden in the Hudson River. Cheney, however, didn’t have access to any of these spaces. So the old truck was a practical solution. The back of the truck provided him with the space he needed.
So Cheney set to work. First, he drilled holes in the truck bed—allowing water to pass through. Then he laid down a recycled plastic mat. The soil came next—a special lightweight variety. He made sure that everything was organic. Cheney preferred organic because he wanted to grow vegetables without chemicals. Then he planted lettuce, herbs, spinach, and tomatoes. Finally, he watered and waited.
When the food was ready to pick, Cheney drove the truck from one urban neighborhood to another. He gave away some of the vegetables. He sold the rest to friends and neighbors. Everywhere he parked, passersby stopped and talked about the beautiful vegetable garden in the back of the truck.
Cheney strongly believes that people are better off eating more local food—that is, food grown close to where they live. Local food has both environmental and health advantages. It reduces “food miles”. The term food miles refers to the distance between where you produce food and where you sell it. A lot of the food in large supermarkets travels hundreds of miles to get to your dinner table. This has an economic and environmental cost. Then there is the question of nutrition—food that helps you grow and be healthy. The nutritional benefits of vegetables decrease over time. So eating food within a few days of harvesting is healthier for you.
Cheney knows that his truck farm cannot solve the problem of the lack of fresh food in some neighborhoods. Yet, like rooftop gardens, it could be part of the solution. As Cheney says, “If we can grow food in the back of an 1986 Dodge pickup, we can definitely find better ways to grow more fresh produce.”
43.The old 1986 truck from Ian Cheney’s grandfather is working properly, isn’t it
44.Where does Cheney plant his vegetables
45.Why did Cheney drill holes in the truck bed
46.How did Cheney deal with the vegetables he grew
47.What are the two reasons Cheney suggests people eat more local food
48.What do you think of farmers in New York in the passage Give your reasons.

Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for Melati and her sister. But in 2013, when Melati was 12, and Isabel just 10, the sisters started to lose their love for swimming in the waters near their home on the island. When they walked back to shore, red and white plastic shopping bags would stick to their legs and bodies.
Melati didn’t think much about it until later in 2013, when her teacher gave a lesson on world heroes. Each of the heroes made a positive change to the world.
One night, the sisters talked about ways to fix the plastic pollution. Their parents agreed with the girls’ ideas. Soon, they gathered a team of 15, made up of school friends and students from other schools. They named their group “Bye Bye Plastic Bags (BBPB)”. Its task was simple: stop local people from using plastic bags.
The following year, the BBPB team spent their lunchtimes having meetings and organizing activities to stop plastic bags. Within 24 hours, more than 6000 people, both local and people from around the world, had signed up.
Melati and Isabel’s effort has made big changes. In 2017, they organized the first beach clean-up. Around 12,000 people collected 36 tons of rubbish across 55 locations. It became the biggest clean-up ever on the island and is now an event every year. In 2018, the government helped to stop single-use plastic bags. The law took effect in July 2019. Then, in 2020 the government promised to reduce plastic waste in the sea by 70 percent by 2025.
Today, BBPB is a global youth movement and has more than 50 teams in 29 countries. Their teams are given a set of tools for starters and a handbook prepared by Melati and Isabel. It explains how to organize teams, events and how to better understand the plastic situation in their own community.

Clara Prado has worked as an English teacher for more than twenty years. In a recent interview, she told us her own experience of learning and teaching English.
How did you learn English yourself
I started learning English when I was about six or seven years old. A new language school opened near my home. I started attending classes twice a week. I enjoyed these classes. During my teenage years, I attended several international youth meetings. I also went to Australia as an exchange student. I learned a lot from communicating with native English speakers.
What’s the best part of teaching English for you
I have met many wonderful people throughout my career. Teachers are a fun group of people. They often get excited about a challenge. Many teachers are creative. They almost always find a way to make things work. I’ve learned a lot from them.
And then there are the students. There is nothing better in life than to see them realize their dreams and achieve something they have worked hard for.
What suggestions do you always give to your students
As a language learner, you have to be comfortable with making mistakes. The goal is not to be perfect. It’s to be able to communicate with others. Learning a language can be a lifelong process. No one can learn to speak a language well overnight. You will be speaking just a little more every day.
What challenges do you think learners face today
I think the biggest challenge today is the unknown. Technology and many other things are changing fast. We have no way of knowing what will happen in 10, 20 or 50 years from now, so how can you prepare yourself or others Well, you can’t be prepared for everything. But you can equip yourself with creativity and the ability to keep learning throughout your life and to work with others. Most importantly, you must stay strong and carry on.
61.What is the interview with Clara Prado about
62.Did Clara Prado start learning English at a young age

It was Saturday that day. Luke was wearing his basketball clothes, waiting for his chance to play but until last week, nobody asked him to play. Although the 18-year-old student does well in playing basketball, his coach wouldn’t like to bring Luke into play. This is because it isn’t easy for Luke to see things even when he wears glasses. He has to try his best to aim at the basketball hoop① by focusing on the right corner of his glasses. His mother said that he was born with cerebral palsy②.
On the high school’s Senior Night last week, Luke’s coach finally called him to play during the final minute of the game. With the teammates already coming to give him a warm welcome, Luke got into position as the crowd cheered him up.

Once the game was back in play, one of Luke’s teammates passed him the ball. Though he had been practising shooting hoops since he was in the third grade, this was the first time he had ever taken a shot on his high school basketball team. He took a deep breath to release the nervous feeling.
As the watchers waited, Luke took the shot and dropped the ball. It fell through the net, hardly touching the hoop. He made it! In fact, his score helped the team win the game. All his teammates came to hug him, showing great admiration③ and respect.

Once upon a time, there were four seeds who were good friends. The wind took them into the air and they finally landed on an open space in a jungle. There they remained hidden in the ground, hoping they would be able to grow up and become beautiful trees.
But when the first seed began germinating (发芽), they realized that it wouldn’t be such an easy task. In that area, there lived a group of monkeys, and the smallest ones would amuse themselves by throwing bananas at any plant that was starting to grow.
They threw so many bananas at the first seed that it was almost split (分裂) in two. And when it told the other seeds what had happened, they all agreed it would be better to wait for that group of monkeys to move on before they tried to grow.
Then, the first seed thought she should at least attempt (尝试) it. And when she tried, she was pelted with bananas, and was left folded over. The other seeds told her to stop trying, but that little seed was so determined to become a tree that she tried again and again.
So, for days, weeks and months, the little plant was attacked by the monkeys, and she was always doubled over (在腰部弯曲).
And then, one day, she didn’t double over. She was hit by one banana after another, but none of them managed to make her bend. She had taken so many blows, and been doubled over so many times, that she was full of hard knots and scars. They helped her grow stronger, and finally, it could withdraw (承受) the impact of a banana. And the brave seed was already so well developed that the little monkeys couldn’t uproot her from the ground, either. So there she stayed, growing, growing and growing.
Thanks to the strength of her trunk, she could continue to overcome all difficulties, until she became the most majestic tree in the jungle. Meanwhile, her friends remained hidden in the ground. Dr. David Evans, 65, has been teaching chemistry in Beijing for nearly 30 years. He has been famous online in China recently. It’s because of his great work to make the public understand science better and have fun from it.
He is also a regular visitor to schools. Young students were interested in the experiments that produce bubbles in test-tubes, smoke, fire and fluorescent color (荧光染料). “The most important thing is not the experiment you choose to make, but how you use the material to make it interesting and to give some knowledge,” he said. When asked about the videos online, he added, “I want to use the Internet to light up their interest in chemistry. Hopefully, I can give students a chance to actually see the beauty of chemistry, and some of them would love to become scientists in the future.”
So far, he has visited more than 300 cities across China, giving chemistry lessons in schools, science museums and other places. But China is so huge that Evans realizes he needs to be more creative in reaching out to the public. So in 2018, he started uploading videos online. The 534 videos have received more than 9.9 million followers and 23 million “likes”.
For his great efforts and achievements in China, Evans was given the Friendship Award, the highest one in China for foreigners, in 2001, and the China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award, the top scientific award for foreign scientists, in 2005.

Education Is the Key
Reporter: Hello, everyone. Besides helping animals in pain, the SPCA also runs a very active education program in schools. Meet Ms Ann Lek, our Education Officer. Her job is to help more people understand animals so that they will be treated (对待) better.
Reporter: What is your job duty in the SPCA, Ann
Ms Ann Lek: I give talks at schools and in many other places to help people learn more about animals. I pay visits at our shelter once a week to teach people what they should consider before getting a pet. Besides weekly talks and visits, I also help educate the public about responsible pet ownership.
Reporter: When did you decide to become an Education Officer
Ms Ann Lek: I always love animals and want to make this world a better place for them. I started as a volunteer with the organization, when I was still attending university. It is so enjoyable to work with those who feel the same as I do. After volunteering for four years, I wanted to do more. I decided to join them full-time when they needed an Education Officer.
Reporter: What is the most unforgettable experience you have met while working for the SPCA
Ms Ann Lek: Looking after pets and being able to bring them to work! I really appreciate (感激) the fact that I can bring my pets with me into the office when I want to. They’re my joy and give me the energy at work. Being able to bring my dogs or cats to work and having my workmates worry about them and shower them totally makes my day.
Reporter: Which misunderstanding of pets would you like to change most
Ms Ann Lek: I really hate it when people are unhappy when I talk about pets, or when taxi drivers refuse to take me because I’m travelling with my dog. Whenever I speak to them and ask why, they always give the same terrible reason: “They’re dirty.” They work and travel closely with human beings every day and share all kinds of public things, but why should we get worried about contracting (感染) a kind of illness from the friendly neighbourhood pets So I think education is the key!

BOOK OF THE WEEK
Heidi
By Johanna Spyri
The novel explores themes (主题) of nature, friendship and kindness. Heidi is a little Swiss girl, whose honesty influences those around her. She goes to live with her grandfather in the Alps. She quickly learns to love her new life with him. But then Heidi must be sent away again to Frankfurt, to be the friend of Clara, a girl who is sick and cannot walk...
Chapter Five
Her first day in Frankfurt was a strange day for Heidi, but even stranger for Ms. Rottenmeier, the housekeeper.
At first Heidi couldn’t think where she was. When she woke up, jumped from the big white bed and ran to the window, she saw neither the snow on high mountains nor the little stream winding below. All she saw was brick walls and houses. There was no sound of the wind in the trees-only the sound of carriages (马车) rattling over the stone streets outside.
Heidi felt as though she had been locked up in a cage. But Ms. Rottenmeier felt that she was locked up with a strange, wild child. The child knew nothing of how to behave in a well-run house. She was late to meals. Her clothes were not correct. She made friends with the servants.
But Clara had become much more cheerful since Heidi’s arrival. She liked talking to Heidi about life in the mountains and about Heidi’s grandfather. For Clara the next few days were much less dull than usual.
Heidi was less happy. Tomorrow, she kept thinking, I really must go home. But one thing pleased her. Every day she took more rolls from the table and hid them in her room. She was saving them for Granny.Granny’s teeth were no longer able to chew the hard, black bread which was all she had, and Heidi planned to take back to her the lovely soft rolls as a present.
At last, one day, she started for home. But at the door she met Ms. Rottenmeier.“Where are you going I have strictly forbidden (禁止) you to go outside by yourself!” Ms.Rottenmeier said.
“I’m only going home,” said Heidi. “I’ve been away too long. My goats must be missing me and...”
“My goodness!” exclaimed Ms. Rottenmeier. “The child is mad!” And then she ordered the servant to lock Heidi up her room.

Henry was always interested in books and ideas. He seldom cared about other people. They only made fun of him. They were also green-eyed because he was so smart, or so he thought. It seemed that Henry knew everything—except one thing. He didn’t know how to get along with other people.
He made his parents believe that school was a waste of time, so he began home schooling with private teachers. He dreamed of being the youngest student to enter university, and he sent letters to famous professors (教授) to see if it was possible.
One day, the doorbell rang. When Henry opened the door, there was his idol—a famous professor he respected—Ralph Brown. Henry was so excited that he could hardly speak. The two talked for a long time and they also exchanged ideas. The professor was surprised at what this young boy knew.
“Henry, tell me about your friends. What do you do for fun ” the professor wanted to know.
There was silence as Henry realized that he didn’t really have any friends. “Well, I don’t have time for all that. I’m too busy with my studies,” he said.
“Henry…___________”
The professor talked a little more and then said, “I have to go, but I have a test for you. In this box, there are three things. I want you to learn how to use them. It is not very simple and you’ll need another person to help you. Experiment and learn how to use them, and I’ll be back in a week to see how you’re doing. Then, I’ll have another test for you.”

Alice and Jill were nine-year-old twins. Alice had brown hair and brown eyes, while Jill had blond hair and blue eyes. Alice had a round face, while Jill had a heart-shaped face. For the longest time, the twins were begging their mom to have a pet. Their choices for a pet were as different as they were.
This is where the problem began. Alice would say, “A dog is a better pet than a cat because you can teach a dog many things and run in the park with him.” Jill would say, “A cat would make the best pet because we could just sit and watch him run around in the room.” “A pet is a lot of responsibility,” said Mom. She said the girls needed to sit down together and make a list of the things they wanted to know about keeping each pet.
The girls agreed, and sat down that night to make their list. They were going to spend the money they saved together to buy their pets. After school the next day, they went to Mr. Li’s Pet Shop and asked Mr. Li to show them some dogs and cats. Mr. Li showed them a cute brown dog and a white cat. The girls brought the list they made the night before and asked many questions. Finally, the girls said, “Mr. Li, we know what we want to have.” “We will take the cute grey rabbit with a pink nose!” Mr. Li was so surprised. “How did you choose a rabbit ” “We both like rabbits, and he looks so sad, and we know he is waiting for someone to take him.”
Mr. Li got the rabbit the cage and some food to make sure they had everything they would need. “Do you have a name picked out for him ” Jill said, “We are going to call him ‘Double love’.” Mr. Li laughed, and the girls carried Double love to his new home. But this escape room experience was so much better! Joe’s a big Horry Potter fan, he’s read all the books, so he chose the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry escape rooms for us. Mei Ling, aged 14, Guangzhou, China I haven’t done anything like this before, but I love history; so to celebrate the end of term, we went to a Pharaoh (法老) escape room. What we needed to do was to find the lost treasure of the last Pharaoh. It was like travelling to another continent—the pyramid was very real. We worked as a team to find clues and solve riddles. It was satisfying to complete the task, but I think some of the riddles were really a piece of cake because we completed all the tasks in only 49 minutes!
