Wu Haoyuan works as a police officer in Sanlitun, Beijing.
A Beijing police officer shares his work stories.
I like watching TV shows that tell police stories, like Ordinary Greatness (《警察荣誉》). I respect the police since they keep us safe.
Zhang Yuchen, 13, Ningbo
I’ve been working as a policeman for 12 years. I am now the leader of the crime-fighting team at the Sanlitun police station in Beijing.
Wu Haoyuan, 33, Beijing
Zhang: What’s a day for a police officer like
Wu: We patrol (巡逻) every day. We sometimes wear plain clothes (便衣) and sometimes drive police cars. The sirens (警笛) on the cars let people know we are here to take care of them. Sanlitun is a busy place. We deal with 50 to 90 cases every day. Staying up late is part of the job. Every four days each police officer here gets a 24-hour duty. If big events are taking place, we may stay at our police station for weeks without going back home.
Zhang: What kinds of cases do you usually get
Wu: The Sanlitun police station has three teams—a community team, crime-fighting team and a general command office. The community team usually deals with small fights or lost phones. The crime-fighting team takes care of more serious cases, while the office focuses on things like household registration (户籍登记).
Zhang: If I’m not very strong or brave, can I still become a police officer
Wu: Yes, you can. If you are physically strong, you may want to join the Special Weapons and Tactics (特警) team. If you’re good at dealing with different people, you might be a good community police officer. If you’re shy but careful, you can do office work.
As for being brave, police officers are not always fearless. Even now, when I face dangerous people, I still get scared. But our sense of responsibility gives us the courage to keep going.

“How are you ” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the United States greet each other. But “How are you ” is also a very unusual question. It’s a question that often doesn’t have an answer. The person who asks “How are you ” hopes to hear the answer “Fine.”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you ” isn’t really a question and “Fine.” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello.” or “Hi.”.
Sometimes, people also don’t say exactly (精确地) what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree ”, the other person might be thinking, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong.” But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not so sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
People also don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I have to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up (挂断电话) gives an excuse, “Someone is at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove (炉子).” The excuse might be real, or it might not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people often don’t say exactly what they are thinking. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it’s a part of the game of language.
46.When a person in the United States asks “How are you ”, he or she wants to hear “_________”.
A.Thank you. B.Goodbye. C.Fine. D.I don’t know.
47.When a person wants to disagree with someone, it is polite to say “_________”.
A.I’m not so sure. B.You’re wrong. I disagree. C.I’m sure I disagree. D.No, I disagree.
48.When a person says “I have to go now. Someone is at the door.”, the person may be _________.
A.giving an excuse B.hurting someone’s feelings C.ill D.asking you a question
49.One of the rules of the game of language is probably “_________”.
A.Always say what you mean B.Be polite.
C.Don’t disagree with other people. D.Never say exactly what you’re thinking.
50.Where can you probably read this article
A.In a sports magazine. B.In a geography magazine. C.In a food magazine. D.In a culture magazine.
阅读短文,用英文填空或回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。
I was running along the seashore and I noticed a young girl sitting on the sand and crying. Her face was wet with tears, and her eyes were red and puffy. Then I passed by.
This young girl reminded me of a memory. I also sat by the sea, crying out my sadness, my loss, my confusion and my feeling of hopelessness. I let my salty tears wash over me and take my heaviness away. I wished that someone would stop and give me a hug, making me feel less lonely in the world. I immediately related to this girl and I decided that when I returned, I would give her a hug if she was still there.
I headed back. The girl was still sitting there, crying. I said, “I know I am a stranger, but I really want to give you a hug if you want one. Is that OK ” She looked at me with her watery eyes and nodded.
I gave her a big hug and told her that whatever had happened, she would be able to get through it. She had the inner strength to move forward. It was not a long hug but it was a very powerful one.
As I was leaving, the young girl said, “It is the best part of my day.” I replied, “It is the best part of my day, too.”
Sometimes, it’s the small things that make a big difference. Even a hug, a smile, or a card can sometimes change someone’s life.

Learning A New Skill
The new skill I acquired during the vacation is cooking. Previously, I thought cooking was dull. As a result, I kept finding all kinds of excuses to avoid it. However, with the encouragement and guidance of my parents, I learnt Kung Pao chicken after going through a series of trials and errors. Hardly had I put the dish I made on the table when my parents praised it for looking good. After tasting it, they even thumbed up, which boosted my confidence. This cooking experience taught me that however challenging a task might seem, you need to break through your comfort zone. Only in this way can you accomplish whatever you want to achieve.
