I loved going to school. But since May moved from another school, the atmosphere had become a bit strange. Everyone thought her attitude was a bit tough. May was about five feet eight inches tall, making her the tallest kid in our fifth-grade class and, in fact, the whole school. She challenged the shy third graders and her competitive (好胜的) spirit in gym class put pressure on the boys.
To avoid unnecessary trouble, l always kept a certain distance from her. l hoped it could stay that way.But everything changed one morning when I came to class with a new hairstyle. It all started when my best friend Jamie said my hair looked nice. I felt happy. However, I noticed May's serious look, which made me a bit nervous, but I continued focusing on my math work. Then, as May walked past me, she commented, “Nice braid (辫子).”
I felt a bit surprised, I looked at her, then felt worried because I saw May make a scissors-like motion (动作) with her fingers towards me. l got nervous and misunderstood, thinking that she wanted to cut off my braid. After thinking, I decided to hide in the restroom after school to avoid meeting May on the way home.
I did this for a few days, feeling anxious. One morning, my mom noticed my change. She could see the stress in my eyes and the way I hesitated (犹豫) before leaving for school. She knew something was troubling me. So she asked what had happened. I told her, “May wants to cut off my braid." Tears started rolling down my cheeks. Mom held my hand and said, “Don't be afraid, honey. You might have misunderstood May, She might just want to make friends with you but doesn't know how to express it.”

This experience taught me that appearances can be deceiving, and true understanding comes from open - minded communication.(这次经历告诉我,外表可能具有欺骗性,真正的理解来自开放的沟通。)
Through this incident, I learned that instead of making assumptions, we should always give others a chance to explain, as misunderstandings can easily be cleared up with a simple conversation.(通过这件事,我明白了与其妄加揣测,我们应该总是给别人解释的机会,因为一个简单的对话就能轻易消除误会。)
Our friendship blossomed from this misunderstanding, showing that even the most unlikely connections can be formed when we take the time to understand each other.(我们的友谊从这次误会中绽放,表明当我们花时间去了解彼此时,即使是最不可能的联系也能建立起来。)
This encounter made me realize that everyone has their own way of expressing themselves, and it's our responsibility to approach others with kindness and an open heart.(这次相遇让我意识到每个人都有自己的表达方式,我们有责任以友善和开放的心去对待他人。)
In the end, I understood that friendship is not only about shared interests but also about the courage to break through misunderstandings and embrace differences.(最后,我明白了友谊不仅在于共同的兴趣,还在于有勇气突破误解,接纳差异。)
After hearing my mom's words, I fell into deep thought. I recalled every interaction I had with May. She had always been tough - looking, but now I started to think about the times she actually seemed a bit lonely. Maybe mom was right. She might be just as eager to make friends as I was. So, I decided to take the initiative. I wrote a note to May, inviting her to my house on Saturday. I was nervous as I handed it to her, but a glimmer of hope shone in my heart.
When May came to my house on Saturday, we greeted each other warmly. She immediately noticed my braid and smiled. “I've always wanted to learn how to braid like that,” she said. I was surprised. She then explained that the scissors - like motion was just her way of showing she liked my braid. We laughed together about the misunderstanding. We spent the afternoon braiding each other's hair and sharing stories. From that day on, we became good friends, and I learned that first impressions aren't always accurate.
After hearing my mom's words, I fell into deep thought. I realized that I had been judging May based on her appearance and a single gesture. I decided to face my fears and talk to her. I asked her to meet me in the school garden after class. When we met, I was a bit nervous, but I gathered my courage and told her how I felt.
When May came to my house on Saturday, we greeted each other warmly. She apologized for making me feel scared. She said she was new to the school and didn't know how to fit in. She admired my confidence and wanted to be friends. We talked for a long time, sharing our hobbies and dreams. I felt so happy to have made a new friend. This experience taught me that we should never judge others too quickly and that communication can bridge any gap.
After hearing my mom’s words, I fell into deep thought. Did she really just want to make friends with me I wasn’t sure, but I was willing to find out. I decided to talk to May. So I found her at break. I took my courage in both hands and said, “Hi, May. I wanted to invite you to my house this weekend,” my voice trembling slightly. Then, something unexpected happened. May smiled. Her smile was warm and sincere. “I’d love to come,” she replied. I felt a wave of relief wash over me.
When May came to my house on Saturday, we greeted each other warmly. We spent the day talking and laughing. She talked a lot, and at that moment, I realized she was just a girl who wanted to be accepted. She told me about her love for basketball. I shared my interests in reading and drawing. We discovered we had a lot in common. From then on, we became good friends. I never thought it was my braid that helped us build a new friendship.
