A skywell, or “tian jing”, is typical feature of a traditional home in southern and eastern
China, which can date back to Ming and Qing dynasties. A skywell is almost always in the center
of a house, meaning there’re rooms on four sides or three sides and a wall. It acts as a
transitional(过渡的) space between indoor life and the outdoor environment.
Before the invention of air-conditioning, southern China’s skywells played a key role in
keeping people’s homes cool. When wind blows above a skywell house, it can enter the indoor
space through the opening. As the cool outdoor air travels down the walls to the lower floors, it
replaces warmer indoor air, making the bottom of the skywell stay cool. Even when there is no
natural wind, air circulation(循环) still takes place, because the temperature is different between
the top and bottom of the skywell. Moreover, another part of the cooling affect comes from the
evaporation(蒸发 ) of water. People collect rainwater in their skywells, and when the water
evaporates, it cools hot air.
Today, although fewer and fewer people live in skywell houses, some designers take a new
interest in the traditional Chinese buildings. They are getting creative ideas from skywells to help
keep new buildings cooler. One example is the National Heavy Vehicle Engineering Technology
Research Center(NHVETRC) in Jinan, which was completed in 2022. The 18-floor glass-walled
tower building has a huge skywell in the middle, from the fifth to the top floor. The lifts, toilets
and meeting rooms are all set around the skywell, which helps improve the lighting and air
circulation of the building and then cut the use of energy.

A. How a skywell helps to cool a house.

A. Skywells: A Traditional Design to Be Protected
B. Skywells: Modern Technology for City Lives
C. Skywells: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Times

What do you call your mother’s mother Whether you say
laolao or waipo depends on your dialect(方言). And humans aren’t
the only ones who have different dialects. Some animals do, too!
Scientists at Aarhus University in Denmark spent six years
studying sperm whale in the Caribbean. They found that the whale
communicate through special noises that are unique to their group
because the noise has never been found in Pacific whales. When
researchers studied the howls(嚎叫 ) of different kinds of wolves, they found that red wolves,
Arctic wolves and coyotes(郊狼) have howls that are different in pitch(音高). In other words, they
have their own dialects. Other animals that have been shown to have dialects include bats and
dogs.
So how do animals develop their own dialects According to scientist Darcy Kelley, most
animals learn their accents(口音) naturally. For example, monkeys start speaking their dialect as
soon as they are born. And when scientists placed some monkeys in a new environment where
their playmates all spoke a different dialect, it was interesting to find that the monkeys still spoke
their own dialect. It seemed that the environment had no influence on their communication.
However, some animals can change their accent according to their environment. Studies show that
birds who live in cities develop different accents from those in the countryside. To deal with loud
city noise, city birds’ tweets(啁啾声 ) are high-pitched. It makes it easier to be heard in noisy
places.
“A proper accent can help animals to find friends or warn the coming of enemies, which is a
basic living skill. No animal group can risk changing their own dialect and learning a new one.”
Darcy Kelly says.
27. How does the writer lead into the topic
A. By giving an example. B. By listing numbers. C. By making a survey.
24. Which might be the right meaning of the underlined word “unique”
A. 独一无二的 B. 不可或缺的 C. 十分稀有的
29. What can we infer from the passage
A. All the animals are found to have their own dialects.
B. The environment doesn’t always influence animals’ accents.
C. It’s worth taking a risk for animals to change their own dialects.
30. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To tell us the importance of dialects.
B. To ask us to protect the dialects of animals.
C. To introduce a fascinating discovery about animals.
