When Scrooge woke up, it was very dark. The ghost that Marley told him about didn’t appear until the clock struck one. The Ghost of Christmas Past was very strange. It was the height of a child but it looked like an old man.
The Ghost asked Scrooge to walk with him. They passed through the wall and stood on a country road. When they walked along the road, Scrooge found this was the place where he grew up. At a desk a lonely boy was reading a book. When Scrooge saw himself, he cried.
A moment later they went in an apprentice. There Scrooge saw his old boss, Fezziwig. He asked Ebenezer, Scrooge’s former self, now a young man, and Dick, Scrooge’s workmate to get ready for the party. Soon the warehouse was cosiest, warmest, brightest ballroom. They enjoyed themselves there.
After the party, they went on travelling. Scrooge saw himself again. He was older now. He was sitting by a pretty young girl, Belle. There were tears in her eyes. She said Scrooge had changed. He gave up all his dreams and now he was only interested in making money. They couldn’t make each other happy any more. She thought Scrooge wouldn’t choose to marry a poor girl like her. So she stood up and said goodbye to him.
Although Scrooge wanted to go home, the Ghost continued making him look. He saw Belle and his beautiful girl laughing happily. Then the father came in with many Christmas toys and presents. Their happiness was indescribable. The master of the house sat happily with his daughter and her mother by the fire. Scrooge regretted so much that his eyes filled with tears.

To become stronger and get better fighting skills, he went to many schools. One day, he went to the best school in New York. Before entering, he was made to hand in all his weapons (武器).

Hainan gibbons are the world’s rarest primates (灵长类动物). They only live in Hainan. Their daily life begins with the male heads of the five remaining families’ high and beautiful whistling (啸叫声). It can reach villagers down in the valleys which are 800 to 1,200 meters below.
Sadly, gibbons once nearly died out. With the efforts of the researchers, their number has increased from less than 10 in two families to 35 in five families.
Although gibbons can look at people curiously from a few meters away, it’s difficult to follow the gibbons. The best way to follow the gibbons is by sound at present. Like humans, gibbons produce vocal cues. With the help of the advanced cameras, we will learn more about their lifestyle and the way they express feelings like joy, anger and sadness.
For the next six months, 11 researchers will work with other experts to study the information collected over the last year. Then they will finish a report on the voice characteristics of the gibbons, and try to explain their daily behavior.
The database (数据库) is expected to be completed in three years. It will play a major role in researching and protecting gibbons and other rare plants and animals. The project is the first of its kind in China. It’s designed to follow all major rare plants and animals in a single protected area. Researchers suggested that we can explain not only gibbons’ simple communication but also their behavior in the future because of research into Hainan gibbon protection.
The growth of Hainan gibbon population gives the whole world confidence to protect the endangered primates in the future.

An about 2-metre-wide alley, or “Liu Chi Xiang” in Chinese, now attracts a large number of visitors in Tongcheng, Anhui.
There is an ancient story behind it. During the Qing Dynasty, Minister Zhang Ying received a letter from his family back in his hometown of Tongcheng one day. From the letter, Zhang learned that his family had quarrelled with their neighbour Wu and his family over the boundary between their houses. Since both families held strong power in Tongcheng, the disagreement was never solved.
Zhang’s family wrote the letter hoping that Zhang could make their neighbour give in. However, Zhang replied with a poem saying, “Writing a letter from home, miles away, just for a wall. All that fuss (大发牢骚) over one metre or two. Look at the long Great Wall. Long gone is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang.” His reply made the family members realize that the wall was only a temporary (暂时的) matter and that the close relationship with their neighbour was more important. So, they decided to move their wall back about one metre. In turn, the Wu family was deeply touched by this act and moved back another metre while building their wall. It created an about two-metre-wide narrow “alley” between the houses.
Today, Tongcheng has become a national historical and cultural city. And the alley shows the values of tolerance and harmony (宽容与和谐) that are widely admired in China.
