In 1795 the new French government started the metric system(公制). Before that, every part of France had a different system for finding the size or length of something, for example, cloth makers worked with one system, food sellers used another. The government wanted one scientific system. They asked a group of scientists and people who were good at math to invent a system. They decided to use the numbers ten, hundred and thousand for their system.
Next, they had to decide on a “natural” length. They chose one ten-millionth(1/10,000,000)of the distance(距离) from the equator to the North Pole(北极点). They called this distance 1 meter.
According to the natural length, they finally decided to choose the gram for weighing things. A cubic(立方的) centimeter of water weighs 1 gram.

Please tell me how to make them disappear.” The old man smiled and said, “I’I I give you an answer tomorrow morning. 2 ”James answered, “sure, I can.” The old man asked him to take care of the 100 camels(骆驼)for the night, making sure that they all sat down and rested before James could go to sleep.
3 James answered sadly, “I didn’t sleep at all. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get all the camels to sit together. Even if I managed to get some camels to sit on one side, a few others would stand on the other side.”
“That’s true. Some camels sat down quietly. 4 If you came back later, you would see some of the camels finally sit down, even though they didn’t sit at first,” the old man said. “Problems are just like camels — some problems get solved by themselves, some get solved after your effort, and some don’t get solved even after you have tried your best. Leave such problems to time. 5 ”
James felt a sense of understanding. It completely changed the way he saw life’s challenges.
A. They’ll come to an end. B. I always live in a desert. C. But first, can you do a small thing for me D. But other camels didn’t sit even after lots of effort. E. One day, a wise old man came to the village with 100 camels. F. The next morning, the old man asked James how his night went.

When you see a globe, close your eyes and spin(旋转) it quickly. Then stop it with your finger. You will probably land on a body of water(水域). That’s because water covers 71% of the Earth’s surface. But if you don’t hit water, you might discover a place you’ve never heard of.
These days, computers and smartphones can tell us where we are. But globes have remained popular. Peter Bellerby, a globe maker in London, says this is because a globe “connects us to our planet.” With a globe, you can easily see what’s on the other side of the world from where you are. Joshua Nall is a museum director in England. He agrees that technology can give students more detailed information about the world. But the physical globe has become a symbol of knowledge.
Bellerby’s company makes about 600 globes a year. To make a globe, workers produce a sphere (球状物) first. Then they place map pieces, called “gores” onto the globe. The gores fit together to cover the sphere completely. Artists then paint the globe with different colors.
The world’s oldest surviving globe dates from the 1490s. It is called the “Earth Apple.” Martin Behaim, a German, made it. The globe shows the world in the late 15th century. You won’t find North or South America on it because Europeans hadn’t discovered them yet. Two of the world’s most famous globes were created about 450 years later. They were made for British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U. S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War Ⅱ.
Some interesting 6 about globes
An amazing 7 :
●Close your eyes and spin a globe quickly;
●Stop it with a finger;
●Your finger probably land on a body of water or discover a place you’ve never heard of.
The 8 of the globe:
●Peter Bellerby: A globe connects us to our planet.
●Joshua Nall: The physical globe has become a symbol of knowledge.
The 9 to make a globe:
●Produce a sphere;→●Place gores onto the globe;→●Paint the globe.

●“Earth Apple” was made around the 1490s.
●Two of the world’s most famous globes were made around the 10 during World War II.
