The Chinese game Black Myth: Wukong topped the best-selling list in 29 countries on the game platform Steam. Within just a few hours of its launch, it has more than 1.1 million online players at the same time. The game’s presentation (呈现) of Chinese culture has not only impressed Chinese players but also loved by a large number of foreign players. As a result, many international games are now reading the original book Journey to the West as a “required course” before experiencing the game.
This success is not the only case. Since the 2010s, popular works like The Three-Body Problem, The Wandering Earth,30,000 Miles from Chang’an, and My Altay have all received great reviews and helped bring Chinese culture to the global stage. From every plant in the game to every word spoken by the characters, Black Myth: Wukong shows different national cultural characteristics.
To reproduce (再现) the buildings in the original work of Journey to the West, the game developers traveled across the country and set up China’s first virtual (虚拟的) asset library of ancient buildings. A large number of historical temples, cultural relics (遗迹), and ancient books were reproduced, including the Dazu Rock Carvings in Chongqing and the Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou. The wonders in the game make players around the world marvel at Chinese culture.
“When making the video games, we didn’t even remove the dust to keep the beauty of Chinese ancient buildings fully.” said the game creators. Chen Yuyan, 25, the founder of the “We Love Walking in the Park” interest group on Douban, never expected that the interest group would now have 100,000 members. Park lovers from both home and abroad share their park experiences, post photos taken in parks, and give likes and reviews of parks. Within this group, there is an idea called “20 minutes for parks”.
