If you’ve reached the end of the year feeling as though you didn’t read enough, we’ve got you. Here are some of the best books of the year according to notable artists, image-makers and other cultural taste makers.
Emily Ratajkowski, model: Ghost Lover’
“This collection of nine short stories probes into many of the same themes in Lisa Taddeo’s beloved ‘Three Women’, but discusses them in a sharper, more disagreeable way. She ruthlessly explores jealousy relationships between women, aging, revenge and, of course, desire. Taddeo never lets you come up for air -- making you laugh while simultaneously horrifying you all when you least expect it.”
Hans UIrich Obrist, artistic director: ‘I Always Knew’
“This is a portrait of artist and writer Barbara Chase-Riboud, through the letters she wrote to her mother, Vivian Mae, between 1957 and 1991. In this remarkable title, Barbara Chase-Riboud tells her mother about her development as an artist, her love stories, and her trips around the globe, from Africa to China. In these memoirs (回忆录), Chase-Riboud frankly and passionately describes her aspirations, her ambitions and creative inspiration, while also showcasing love and tenderness to her mother.”
Avan Jogia, actor and director: ‘Who is Wellness for ’
“‘Who is Wellness For ’ is a book that works as part social observation and part memoir. It explores the commercialization of healing and ritual and asks questions about the industry of wellness I found the read insightful, thoughtful, and unafraid. Wellness isn’t for anyone if it’s not for everyone.”

In Sichuan Province, long-time resident French artist Vincent Cazeneuve, is integrating traditional Chinese lacquerware (漆器) skills with techniques taken from Western modern art into his creations.
Born in Toulouse, Vincent has been living in southwest China for more than a decade. With the influence of French artists Jean Dunand and Gaston Suisse, his journey to unravel the secrets of Chinese lacquerware and his fascination for lacquer art started. “I studied their artworks and often wondered why they used Chinese lacquer. In those days, lacquer could not be found in France.” Said the artist.
Native to Asia, lacquer trees are planted and tapped for their liquid. It is almost impossible to find lacquer trees in Europe. So, instead of continually transporting lacquer back to France, Vincent chose to send himself to China.
Having explored his connections with lacquer over the years, the artist also learned a range of techniques, which he integrated into his own artworks. To dive deep into the art of lacquerware. Vincent traveled to Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (自治州)in Sichuan Province, where lacquer craftsmanship is famous. In fact, he actually met two lacquerware craftsmen, who taught him almost everything they knew.
“I used to know about lacquerware of Yi just by looking at it. But I had never seen the Yi people before. I have never heard their language. I’ve never seen their villages. It’s only when I came here that I felt the power of their culture.” said Vincent.
This field trip gave the artist new inspiration for his exhibition. After seeing Vincent’s exhibition, Liu Guanzhong, a professor at the School of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University said, “What he presents is China in his eyes. Vincent has explored a path: the ideas of a modern artist, but rooting the ancient skills in modern life. He finds new soil for an old seed to bloom into a new flower.”

Arm wrestling (扳手腕) was one of my favorite ways of playing with my brothers growing up. It allowed my younger brother and me to test our strength without getting tackled. I also put up a good fight when arm wrestling with my older brother and his friends. Their greater strength and experience made the challenge even more interesting. Every match seemed to end in a good laugh, no matter who won.
Now I’m a scientist who studies animals in the wild. I have seen that playing is a great way to socialize; there is so much more to play than fun and games. When humans and other animals play, they are building trust with siblings and friends. They learn how far they can push their partners before anyone becomes angry or physically hurt. That’s called “testing boundaries.”
Older playmates may self-handicap(自我设限), appearing to be less competent than they really are to help younger players learn skills and explore their abilities. Play offers a safe space, where everyone knows the rules and can experiment with new ways to move, think, and respond to others.
Over the past 30 years, I've learned a lot about play by watching young male elephants test their strength through sparring (拳击)games with their friends and superiors. Group sparring matches are common at sunset, when several different elephant families show up at the water hole to drink.
After the initial excitement of the arrival and a good long drink, young males slip away from the sides of their watchful moms and aunts to form sparring rings. An elder sister makes sure that the playing doesn't get out of hand, so she is ever present with a trunk on the back or over the head to calm the enthusiasm. That way, the younger males don't end up on the bottom of the pile.
Watching young elephants spar reminds me that play should be part of our everyday schedule ― the less structure(精心组织), the better.
28.What does the author want to show by mentioning his/her childhood experience
A. Winning is the true meaning of play.
B. Children prefer to play traditional games.
C. Play plays an important role in children's development.
D. Arm wrestling is a safe way to test strength.

A. It brings fun. B. It enables boundary breaking.
C. It settles conflicts. D. It develops socializing skills.
30. How do older playmates help the younger to learn during playtime
A. By pretending to be weaker. B. By warning them of risks.
C. By testing their competence. D. By teaching necessary skills.
31. How would the author describe the elephant’s sparring games
A. Safe and fair. B. Not strictly controlled.
C. Well-organized. D. Highly competitive.

Wikipedia (维基百科), one of the last remaining pillars of the open and free web, is in existential crisis.
The trend towards rationality (理性) was endangered long before the birth of the World Wide Web. As Neil Postman noted in his 1985 book Amusing Ourselves to Death, the rise of television introduced not just a new medium but a new atmosphere: a gradual shift from a typographic (印刷的) culture to a photographic one, which in turn meant a shift from rationality to emotions, opinions to entertainment.
In an image-centered and pleasure-driven world, Postman noted, there is no place for thinking, because you simply cannot think with images. It is text that enables us to “uncover lies and confusions, and to detect abuses of logic and common sense. It also means to weigh ideas, to compare and contrast statements, to connect one generalization to another.”
The dominance of television was not contained to our living rooms. It overturned all of those habits of mind, fundamentally changing our experience of the world, affecting politics, religion, business, and culture. It reduced many aspects of modern life to entertainment and commerce. “Americans don’t talk to each other; we entertain each other,” Postman wrote. “They don’t exchange ideas; they exchange images. They do not argue with propositions; they argue with good looks, celebrities and commercials.”
At first, the web seemed to push against this trend. When it emerged towards the late 1980s as a purely text-based medium, it was seen as a tool to pursue knowledge, not pleasure. Reason and thought were most valued in this garden. Universities were among the first to connect to this new medium, hosting discussion groups, informative blogs, electronic magazines, and academic forums. It was an intellectual project, not about commerce or control, created in a scientific research center in Switzerland.
Wikipedia was a fruit of this garden. So was Google search and its text-based advertising model. And so were blogs, which valued text, hyperlinks, knowledge, and literature. And for more than a decade, the web created an alternative space that threatened television’s power over society.
Social networks, though, have since colonized the web for television’s values. From Facebook to Instagram, the medium refocuses our attention on videos and images, rewarding emotional appeals — “like” buttons over rational ones. Instead of searching for knowledge, it engages us in an endless passion for instant approval from an audience, for which we are constantly but unconsciously performing. It reduces our curiosity by showing us exactly what we already want and think, based on our profiles and preferences. The Enlightenment’s motto (座右铭) of “Dare to know” has become “Dare not to care to know.”
Now the challenge is to save Wikipedia and its promise of a free and open collection of all human knowledge among the conquest of social media - how to collect and preserve knowledge when nobody cares to know. We need to understand that the decline of the web and thereby of the Wikipedia is part of a much larger civilization shift which has just started to unfold.
32. According to Neil Postman, which of the following statements is TRUE
A. Television started a revolution in photographic technology.
B. Texts help people think critically to make judgments.
C. Images give people more chances to communicate deeper.
D. The web was meant to serve as an entertainment platform.
33. The underlined word “propositions” in paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A. experiences B. appearances C. opinions D. consequences

A. We are constantly distracted and can’t focus for long.
B. We are well kept updated with the latest information.
C. We have become more curious about the outside world.

35. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage

Beating Your Test Anxiety
It’s that time of year again for high school students. 36 It’s safe to say that, while no one looks forward to testing, those who suffer from test anxiety can feel overwhelmed by this pressure-filled schedule. To help manage this anxiety, let’s start with some strategies.
Firstly, remind yourself that some level of anxiety is normal, and feeling a little stressed can actually improve your performance. Encourage yourself with self-statements like “I can handle this.” 37 Use positive imagery to visualize yourself successfully completing the exam. Furthermore, being well-prepared is the key, so organize your study material and take time over several days, or even weeks, to review it. Avoid cramming (填满) right before the exam, as this can heighten anxiety. In addition to mental preparation, physical well-being is crucial. Get good sleep, not just the night before the exam. 38
Now, let's discuss how to manage anxiety during the exam. 39 Don’t skip over directions ― read them carefully! If you get stuck on a question or section, skip and then return to it later. If you feel you have “gone blank,” allow yourself to mark some response anyway. If you are blank about an essay question, just start writing whatever you know. 40
Finally, after the exam is over, it’s important to reflect on your experience and reward yourself for the changes you made in your habits. Remember, while testing is an unavoidable part of a student’s life, preparation and calming strategies can turn anxiety into confidence.
A. However, no one feels excited.
B. Secondly, prepare your review materials.
C. Before the winter holiday comes the final exam.
D. Practice relaxation techniques and deep breathing.
E. This action can help bring the correct answer to your mind.
F. Budget your time and pace yourself so you have adequate time to finish the test.
G.It can help you strengthen the memories you created during study time.

As a child growing up in China, I was always fascinated by Kunqu, a traditional Chinese opera which originated in the Ming Dynasty, also listed as the world's intangible cultural heritage. I would often watch the traditional performances with awe, enchanted(使陶醉) by the grace and elegance of the performers on stage.
Though I loved Kunqu, I never thought I could learn it, believing it was something only the most talented and experienced could master. However, one day, my friends invited me to attend a grand Kunqu performance in Suzhou, China, which really made me feel an urge to take on the challenge and learn it.
However, my journey of learning Kunqu was not easy. I had to learn the basics of the ancient art form, from the complex techniques used to create the unique vocal style to the complex hand gestures that added a sense of elegance and grace to the movements. It was not just a matter of physical training; I needed to understand the rich history and cultural significance that Kunqu represented.
My first few lessons were rough and I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the class. I was disappointed that I couldn't match the other classmates' skill level, and I found myself feeling discouraged. However, with countless efforts and dedication, I gradually saw improvements. My voice became stronger and more expressive, and my gestures flowed more naturally. I was fascinated by the subtle differences of the style, and began to develop a deeper appreciation for the beauty of Kunqu.
As I spent more time immersed in the world of Kunqu, I began to appreciate the depth of knowledge that went into each performance. Everything from the beautiful makeup and costumes to the props(道具) and music was carefully chosen to convey a particular mood or theme. I studied the classical texts that formed the basis of the Kunqu opera, from The Song of the Pipa Player to The Peony Pavilion, working hard to understand the distinction of language and meaning within each work.

(Text 10)
M: Hello everyone. Today, I would like to discuss dreams. Well, we dream for at least several different reasons. One key benefit is creativity. Sleep, including dream sleep, is associated with an enhanced ability to solve next-day problems. The benefit of REM-sleep dreaming is emotional first aid. It reduces the emotional impact of difficult experiences, making us feel better about them when we wake up the next day. Now, it’s not just that you dream. It’s also what you dream about that seems to make a difference. Scientists have discovered that after learning a crossword puzzle, for example, those students who slept but critically also dreamed about the puzzle were the only ones who ended up being better at solving the puzzle when they woke up. And this is also true for our mental health. For example, people going through a difficult or painful experience such as a divorce, and who are dreaming about that event, go on to gain resolution to their depression relative to those who were dreaming but not dreaming about the events themselves.

Dear Andrew,
I’m writing to share with you a themed activity called Folk Culture Campus Tour in our school last Friday.
In the activity, folk artists demonstrated paper cutting, clay sculpture and calligraphy, sharing their skills and the stories behind these art forms. We even got to try our hands at making simple crafts, which was both challenging and rewarding. This event was a wonderful way to learn about our cultural heritage and appreciate the beauty involved in these traditional crafts.
I wish you could have been here to experience it with us. Looking forward to hearing about your cultural experiences in the UK.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节【参考范文】
Soon, I began to perform in small shows with my fellow classmates. We would gather in a local community center or theater, dressing up in our brightly colored costumes and applying our makeup with care. I loved the feeling of stepping onto the stage in front of an audience. Every time we performed, I felt like my whole world sort of melt away and I was completely immersing myself in such an amazing opera. My voice was delicate and smooth, my movements and gestures elegant and fluent. Finally, my wonderful performances earned myself a reputation as a rising star in the Kunqu community. What a great privilege to show that I was part of a centuries-old tradition that had entertained viewers for generations!
However, as my reputation grew, desperately desired to share it with more people. I started to look for opportunities to perform in a more public setting, volunteering at local festivals and cultural events. I spoke to audience about the history of Kunqu and what it meant to me personally, hoping to inspire others to explore the art form for themselves. As I continued to spread the word about Kunqu, I found that my efforts were paying off. More and more people were becoming interested in this traditional Chinese art form, and I began receiving invitations to perform around the world. I traveled to cities in Europe, Asia, and North America, sharing the beauty of Kunqu with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
