Friends Williams and Smith Jr. spend the weeks leading up to Christmas traveling across the country. They visit all 50 states, making house calls to kids who are sick or disabled. The pair arrive with plenty of toys, and in costume, both of which make the young recipients (接受者) happy.
Williams started this tradition after losing his mother to cancer in 2009, which led him into a deep sadness. Every time he met with those fighting against diseases, he decided he would do something for them. Then he founded his nonprofit organization, a Future SuperHero and Friends, in 2018. Williams has said that sometimes the parents are even more excited than the children.
The pair say they want to make sure families facing hard battles never feel alone. It’s what keeps them going, even when they hardly get any sleep in the process. “Every day, I get to wake up and do what I love,” Williams adds that he doesn’t do it for pay; it’s a way to recover from the sadness of losing his mother and keep his memory alive.

Xie Hongxing spent 46 days trying to copy, in minute detail, a spacecraft, the very example of modern engineering. His feat of craftsmanship was all the more extraordinary when you realize the material he was using was bamboo. The delicate miniature version was his own way of celebrating the country’s ambitious space program.
“It’s a combination of tradition and modernity — a new way to promote the intangible cultural heritage,” says Xie, from Wuyishan city. He used more than a dozen species of local bamboo to demonstrate the aesthetics (美学) of the space station and carefully wove the small solar wings with three different types.
It took him seven hours to figure out how to weave a perfect five-star flag with dyed bamboo strips. “I used very thin bamboo strips of two colors, wove them together with a tool and stretched them tightly to make the pattern of the stars,” says Xie.
Xie posted the weaving process on a popular short video platform, where he has more than 27,000 followers. The topic drew several million views and people online expressed their amazement at the delicate workmanship. He’s quite a dab hand. He also shared how to make a delicate tea tray in the shape of a boat from an old piece of bamboo, as well as how to repair a shabby desk in an artistic way.
Xie says that some old items are bound to be out-of-date, but craftsman can change the designs to create art. He often creates novel handicrafts as well. “Bamboo weaving is like composing a piece of writing — you should think carefully at first. The most difficult part is innovation, and you need imagination to achieve that,” he says.

In 2015, Emma Carlson Berne had just had her third child. She loved her role as a mother, but she often felt consumed by it, like her life would never return to normal. One day, when her baby was about three months old, she decided that her whole family — her husband, her two young boys and her new baby boy — should get out of the house and go to a restaurant.
They tumbled out of the car, ready with a diaper (尿布) bag, books for the kids to read, a seat for the baby and bags of snacks. As soon as they stepped onto the curb, her baby was ready to nurse again, and Berne knew she had to get inside.
“I was already feeling pretty shaky,” she recalled. “So we all pile into the restaurant. We’re very messy; we’re very loud.”
Her baby thrashed (剧烈扭动) around as she tried to nurse him under a blanket, and she worried he was about to cry. Berne began to feel hopeless. “I was feeling a little teary-eyed because, although we were doing it, this was really hard.”
A short time later, her unsung hero appeared: an older woman, who reminded Berne of her own mum. This woman came up and stood there and looked at them. And Berne was sort of preparing that she was gonna say how cute the baby was. Instead, the woman took them all in.
She said admiringly, “What a beautiful family.”
Then she looked at Berne’s two young boys, ages 6 and 3, sitting quietly on Berne’s side of the table. And she said, “It’s not easy to sit at a table for a long time.” The woman saw her older children in a way few people seemed to, now that they were no longer in the infant (婴儿) stage. “Nobody ever noticed them anymore,” Berne recalled.

And that was the most unforgettable memory of my childhood instead of getting pocket money. I remember those beautiful little cards and the small envelopes in which I used to put those cards. In fact, the biggest and the best card was for our teacher, the second-best for the best friend, and the rest were for others, including my brothers and sisters. I remember spending a whole week in happiness and bringing home a lot of New Year cards. Nowadays when I see those cards I am reminded of my childhood. And I still buy one for myself. I hope many of you do. And on this occasion, we will hand out New Year cards, chocolates, and flowers to everyone. Volunteers will go to you and pass you these little presents. 66.Then the woman turned to Berne. And she said, “Look at you, Mum. You’re doing such a good job. It must be very challenging to raise the three children. You are so great.” Berne felt very grateful to her warm words, tears in her eyes. She brightened up at her words of encouragement. The woman brought out a box of chocolates from her bag and gave them to the children, who were excited at the sweets. Berne was too moved to say anything to express her gratitude. Then the woman gently patted on Berne’s shoulder, gave them one last smile, and left on the street.
Nearly 10 years later, Berne is still moved by the woman’s thoughtfulness. And she has often recalled it with friends and family. If she could speak to the woman now, this is what she would say, “Thank you for seeing all of us. And thank you for seeing me. Me, someone who wasn’t often seen during these early days, and someone who was sometimes feeling pretty invisible. And I have never forgotten it.” Now her children have grown up, and her life has become better than before. When Berne meets other women struggling to get out with kids, she often says some warm words to them, just like what the older woman talked to her.

Festivals in China and Western Countries
Reporter: Xiao Xing
In my cross-cultural study on festivals, I have chosen the Spring Festival in China and Christmas in Western countries for comparison.
The Spring Festival signifies the beginning of a new year and the hope for a bountiful harvest. It is celebrated with family reunions, fireworks, and red envelopes which are filled with money. In contrast, Christmas commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ. Westerners decorate trees, exchange gifts, and enjoy a feast with family and friends.
These differences arise from the distinct cultural and religious backgrounds of China and the West. Chinese culture emphasizes family unity and respect for ancestors, while Western culture focuses more on individuality and religious beliefs. Despite these differences, both festivals highlight the importance of family gatherings and the sharing of blessings.
Through this comparison, I’ve observed that while Chinese and Western cultures vary in many ways, they also share a common appreciation for family bonds and festive celebrations.
【导语】本篇书面表达属于应用文。要求考生根据给定的提纲,选择中国和西方国家各一个典型节日,从至少两个方面进行对比,分析异同原因,并探讨节日所反映的中西文化的共性或差异。
