Seven years ago, I was working full time in London, and living in Worthing, which meant a more-than-5-hour commute every day. Besides, I was a working mum and spent little time raising my son. When I was pregnant with my daughter a year later, I decided to stop commuting and freelance (自由职业) from home only, thinking I’d work two weeks a month and take two weeks off. It was tough at first as I could no longer rely on my old clients, big advertising agencies in London, and needed to find a new client base, but it was very much worth it for a better quality of life.
When I started freelancing, I realised that I didn’t know anyone in my hometown, so I set about finding and making friends. And I was shocked at how many amazingly talented and ambitious mums I met who all faced the same problems — how to make their careers work once they have children. So I wanted to find a way to help them still follow their dreams while being the mums they wanted to be.
My daughter was born then, so was a website, a magazine-style website for working mums, www., which is packed with advice and inspiration for ambitious mums. Additionally, I set up a club that goes one step further by providing women with practical tools and brief training they can implement immediately and see results. I have also created step-by-step guides to starting a business or a blog, going freelance or changing career, to help guide women successfully on their journeys.
I believe very strongly that it is possible to have a rewarding career or business and be the mum you want to be. And I am very excited about helping women realise their ambitions. Though I sometimes work seven days a week still, I shape my days and decide what I want to do and when. This means that I am able to bake cakes with my kids after school while doing fulfilling, meaningful work and earning an income.

An ambitious plan to genetically engineer a version of the woolly mammoth (长毛猛犸象), a giant that disappeared 4,000 years ago, is making some progress. A new biosciences and genetics company, Colosal, has raised $15 million to create a mammoth hybeid that looks exactly like its extinct counterpart. The goal isn’t to clone a mammoth, but to create, through genetic engineering, a living, walking elephant-mammoth hybeid.
The scientists revealed they had reprogrammed cells from an Asian elephant, the woolly mammoth’s closest living relative. These changed cells can grow into any kind of elephant cell. The research team has analyzed the than 50 changes to the genetic code of the Asian elephant to give it the characteristics it needs to survive and thrive in the Arctic. These characteristics include a 10-centimeter layer of insulating (绝缘的) fat, five different kinds of hair including some that is up to a meter long, and smaller ears that will help the hybrid tolerate the cold.
Colossal believes that bringing the woolly mammoth back to life could possibly help restore the fragile Arctic tundra (冻原) ecosystem, which is at risk as the world warms. The company has claimed that mammoths, if they should return to their natural habitat in the Arctic in sufficient numbers, would help slow down frozen soil melting. Some scientists believe that, before their extinction, animals such as mammoths and horses kept the earth frozen underneath by walking on the grass, knocking down trees and pressing snow tight. One small study in Siberia published in 2021 suggested that the presence of large mammals such as horses and reindeer resulted in lower soil temperatures in the protected area where they were kept compared with land outside that area.
Colossal also announced plans to being some other animals back to life such as the Tasmanian tiger in 2023 and the dodo in 2024, but its work on the mammoth has been going on longest.

Programming robots that can walk, run and grasp is demanding, so researchers would prefer that they learn on their own. To solve the problem of wear-and-tear(磨损) on real robots learning by trial-and-error, groups of researchers are developing ways to simulate (模拟) the robots and download the skills they learn to real hardware. A new method improves these simulations with data from the real robots. The result is robots with boosted speed and flexibility.
Working with a four-legged robot called ANYmal, roboticists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) added its algorithms(算法) with neural networks (software inspired by the human brain). As the robot feels about in the real world, the neural networks learn the features of each of the bot’s motors. That information feeds back into the simulation, helping it more accurately model the real bot and thus produce more effective skills for downloading. In experiments, ANY mal broke its previous jogging speed record by 25 percent, the researchers reported in January in Science Robotics. It could also regain its balance after being pushed and its footing after being flipped.
ANYmal is commercially available in ANY botics. Motors in its joints have springs that absorb shock, store energy and provide sensory feedback. Each leg has three motors, all interchangeable. Jemin Hwangbo, a roboticist who helped to develop the simulation-based training method, said it was created for rescue operations after natural disasters and oil rig (钻井平台) inspections. It can climb stairs and crawl through tunnels while carrying its heavy digital brain inside its body.
Others are developing four-legged robots to compete ANYmal. In 2008 Boston Dynamics gained notice for its noisy, gas-powered “Big Dog”. The newer “SpotMini” is its 25-kilogram electric cousin. Sangbae Kim, a mechanical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said SpotMini has the world’s most advanced algorithm for navigating(导航) around and over obstacles. The company plans to start selling it this year for jobs ranging from construction to home assistance.

When I was in high school, I have a really hard time expressing myself and talking. My teacher, Ms. Brown, was warm-hearted person, and she made me feel better. She would bring us into the teacher’s office, and she would just smiled while doing her teacher stuff. She never forced me to telling her anything, and she always patient waited for me. I appreciated that she acknowledged my feelings but never required me to talk about them unless I wanted to. There was something so much heartwarming in her smile.
