I was attracted to Spanish and had lived in Spain for many years. When I returned to my home in the UK, I spoke less Spanish as a result. Although these things were mostly unrelated, they were connected. I didn’t realize at the time, but speaking Spanish was actually a way to take care of myself. I was trapped by anxious thoughts, and finally, I was diagnosed (诊断) with a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD (强迫症). When my OCD worsened, I often struggled with my thoughts.
Breaking the cycle of repetitive thoughts on a good day is impossibly hard. On a bad day, it’s simply not possible. It’s like my mind is trying to do too many things at once. This makes recovery challenging since it’s hard to find something that truly catches my attention and pulls me from my worrying thoughts.
One day, soon after my diagnosis, I met a Colombian friend at a supermarket. We talked while waiting in line. During our conversation, I noticed something amazing: I was so focused on him that I wasn’t thinking about anything else. This made me realize why I have always loved languages. When I speak Spanish, I feel happier and more relaxed, almost as if I am communicating in my native language.
Recognizing the connection between speaking Spanish and finding mental (精神的) peace felt like discovering a superpower. If I can’t find someone to speak Spanish with, I listen to English songs and translate them in my mind, which helps me relax. I often watch Spanish movies and listen to my favorite Spanish music. This helps me keep my concern at a manageable level.
It’s easy to list the most obvious advantages of learning languages. You’ll be able to communicate when travelling abroad, and you’ll build friendships. But, for me, Spanish has always been about feeling good more than anything else. And that’s what truly matters.
24. What happened to the author when he returned to the UK
A. He lost his home. B. He became relaxed. C. He forgot the past. D. He suffered worry.
25. How did the conversation with a Colombian friend affect the author
A. He found inner peace. B. He started learning English.
C. He felt quite lonely. D. He disliked going shopping.
26. Why does the author listen to Spanish music
A. It helps him create songs. B. It improves his mental health.
C. It makes his daily life busy. D. It pushes him to do a better job.
27. What does the author think of learning Spanish
A. It is relaxing. B. It is difficult. C. It is helpful. D. It is annoying.
C
Specializing (专攻) in one sport early in a child’s athletic career is often a way to win college scholarships (奖学金) or even go on to be the professionals (职业运动员). However, researchers at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada, say “not so fast”.
“Our study, which is the largest study so far examining the topic of single (单一的) sports specialization, helps to understand present situation of specialization in youth sports,”said Patrick S. Buckley, MD of the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. “Our results showed that present high school athletes specialized two years earlier than present college and professional athletes. The results of our study suggest that specialization at a very young age does not increase the possibility of an athlete achieving top position within his/ her sport.”
Buckley and his team did a survey to high school, college and professional athletes before their yearly pre-participation physical exam. A total of 3,090 people completed the survey. The age of single sport specialization obviously differed among groups and happened at an age of 12.7 ± 2.4 for high school, 14.8 ± 2.5 for college students and 14.1 ± 2.8 for professional athletes. More than 80% of athletes from all study groups reported that they were glad they had focused on a single sport at the age they did. Present high school and college participants (参与者) also reported more sports-related injury than present professional athletes, some of whom noted that their injuries could be from too much play.
“More research needs to be done to fully understand the benefits and risks related with sport specialization at young ages and establish evidence-based strategies to optimize (使优化) the sport experience for kids while minimizing injury. In addition, we must continue to educate parents, coaches, medical professionals and athletes on the do’s or don’ts of safe play to keep kids active for life,” said Buckley.
28. What does the underlined phrase “not so fast” mean in the first paragraph
A. The study was conducted too quickly.
B. Kids needn’t rush into specialization early.
C. The results of the research came out not fast.
D. The researchers were not strict in their work.
29. What can we learn from the survey on sport specialization
A. High school athletes specialized later.
B. Professional athletes had fewer injuries.
C. College athletes specialized at about 14.1.
D. Most athletes recognized early specialization.
30. What is the researchers’ attitude to early sport specialization
A. Disapproving. B. Supportive.
C Careful. D. Uncaring.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. Early Sport Specialization Is Being Challenged
B. Sports: a Key to Getting a College Scholarship
C. Injuries in Sports Are Becoming a Major Worry
D. Early Sport Specialization Leads to Early Success
D
When you listen to people speaking a language you don’t understand, it might seem like the words are flying past your ears at lightning speed.
But some languages really do seem to be spoken faster than others. Even if you know a little Spanish or Japanese, watching a TV show in those languages can be difficult! There’s a good reason for this — they are spoken faster! According to a 2019 study, speakers of these languages use more syllables (音节) per second.
In these two languages, speakers use almost eight syllables per second. Researchers studied 17 different languages. They took 170 recordings of native speakers reading the same 20 texts translated into their language and compared the speeds. For example, Mandarin (普通话) was spoken at just over five syllables per second. But this doesn’t mean that conversations in Mandarin last much longer than those in Japanese. Researchers found that while languages are spoken at different speeds, the rate at which people communicate information is about the same.
So how does that work To understand more, the researchers looked at each syllable in the texts to see how much information each one carries. Some single syllable words give us a lot of information; for example, the words “hope” or “love” in English. These words give us much more information than many single syllables that are just sounds or parts of words.
Some languages are packed more densely (稠密地) with information, so speakers don’t need many syllables to communicate the same amount of information. The average Spanish syllable is not densely packed with information, so people speak faster. Mandarin, however, is densely packed with information, so it is spoken more slowly. This means that everyone finishes communicating at about the same time!
32. Why are Spanish and Japanese mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To stress they are popular with TV. B. To explain how they are developed.
C. To prove why they are hard to learn. D. To state some languages are spoken quickly.
33. Which part is focused on in the study
A. People’s identities. B. Language speeds.
C. Content of the text. D. Conversation time.
34. How did the researchers study the information rate in languages
A. By analyzing information on each syllable. B. By comparing sentence lengths.
C. By measuring speaking speed. D. By counting words.
35. What do researchers find in the end
A. Mandarin uses more syllables than Japanese.
B. People need less time to understand Spanish.
C. More syllable words mean more information.
D. People speaking different languages communicate information at similar rates.

When I started my second year of high school, an exciting opportunity came my way: a year-long exchange program in Bath, England. The thought of studying abroad filled me with both excitement and anticipation (期盼). The chance to experience a new culture, improve my English, and make international friends seemed like a dream that comes true.
I managed to apply for a host family, read about rules and how to survive homesickness, and research about Bath on the Internet. With all preparations made, I was on a plane to Bath, my heart racing with a mix of eagerness and nerves.
Upon arrival, the picturesque city with its historic architecture and beautiful streets attracted me. My host family, Mr Smith, Mrs Smith, and their son Mark, welcomed me warmly, which immediately put me at ease. After my settlement at their home, I quickly found comfort in my new surroundings.
Then came my first week at school, which, however, turned out to be a whirlwind (一片忙乱) besides a feeling of freshness. The education system was different from what I was used to in my hometown. Classes were more discussion-based, and I was encouraged to express my opinions, which I wasn’t comfortable with at first. My teachers and classmates were friendly and curious about my background, often asking questions about my life in China. However, I struggled to keep up with the fast-paced (快节奏的) conversations. The British accent, with its unique slang (俚语), often made it hard for me to understand. There were moments in class when I felt lost, unable to fully understand the discussions or contribute meaningfully. This was frustrating (令人沮丧的), as I had always been a top student back home.
Along with the new experience at school, homesickness began to set in. I missed my family, friends, and the familiar rhythm of life back in China. The cultural differences, from food to social rules, made me hard to get used to at times. I found myself longing for a taste of my home, both physically and mentally.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

The Rise of Cultural Heritage Tourism
With increasing cultural confidence, cultural heritage tourism has become highly popular, and I believe this is a positive trend.
Firstly, it helps us connect with our history and traditions, fostering pride and identity. Visiting historical sites and museums allows us to learn about our ancestors’ achievements and lifestyles. Secondly, it promotes cultural preservation. Profits from tourism can be used to maintain and restore historical sites, protecting them for future generations. Lastly, it boosts the local economy by creating jobs and supporting local businesses.
In conclusion, the popularity of cultural heritage tourism reflects a growing appreciation for our cultural roots and contributes to both cultural preservation and economic growth.

【答案】参考范文:
Recognizing my struggle, people around me stepped in to support me. On weekends, Mrs Smith would take me on a trip to many attractions, some even I had only read about in textbooks. Mrs Smith went out of her way to make me feel at home by cooking Chinese dishes. Mike shared his own experiences of studying abroad to comfort me. At school, my teachers were patient and understanding, offering extra help with assignments and encouraging me to join clubs to make new friends. My classmates invited me to see movies, play hockey, and go to concerts. Everyone was warm, open, and never hesitant in offering help.
Gradually, I began to adapt to (适应) the life here. I offered to share Chinese culture with my host family. I joined the school’s debate club, which helped me improve my English and gain confidence in speaking. I also participated in a local volunteer group, where I met people from different backgrounds, each with their own unique stories. These experiences broadened my perspective and helped me feel more connected to my new environment. As the months passed, Bath began to feel like a second home. I developed a close connection with people here that I knew would last a lifetime.
