Friday night tornadoes hit the Midwest of Nebraska, causing a building to fall down with dozens of people inside and destroying and damaging hundreds of homes.
By Saturday morning, the sounds of chain saws filled the air in the Elkhorn neighborhood of Omaha, a city of 485,000 people. Broken furniture from the damaged homes lay in piles. Fences (篱笆) were knocked over and trees were blown down to the ground.
“We could hear it coming through,” said Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn. “When we came up, our fence was gone and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood’s gone.” Omaha Police Lt. Neal Bonacci said that the Fire Department had completed its search of damaged homes and structures on Saturday. He described the injuries as slight. “You definitely see the path of the tornado,” he said.
“People had warnings of this and that saved lives,” Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said. The tornado warning was issued in the Omaha area on Friday afternoon just as children were due to be released from school. Many schools had students shelter in place until the storm passed.
People are not encouraged to go to the damaged areas just for entertainment, as it will cause traffic jams and may slow emergency vehicles. Meanwhile, Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen posted on X that he had ordered state resources to be made available to help. “Nebraskans are no strangers to pretty bad weather, and, as they have many times before, Nebraskans will help Nebraskans to rebuild,” Pillen said.
The storm caused 78 potential (潜在的) tornadoes. The National Weather Service had not yet confirmed their strength. But the Omaha office said that some of the damage seem to have been caused by a strong tornado with peak winds of 150 mph.
One of the tornadoes hit an industrial building to the west of Omaha, in Nebraska’s Lancaster County, causing it to fall down with 70 people inside. Several were trapped, but everyone was evacuated and the three injuries were not life-threatening, authorities said.
4. Which word can best describe the Friday night’s tornado

A. They are often hit by extreme weather.
B. They are not allowed to go back home.
C. They wish to get help from state resources.
D. They’d rather help each other than turn to the government.
7. What is this text
A. A news report. B. A weather forecast.
C. A disaster warning. D. A disaster prevention handbook.

We’re going to put it out there: ostriches (鸵鸟) are strange, but they are also very cool. Not only are they the largest bird on the planet, but they are also the fastest flightless birds out there. But did you also know that they also have the largest eyes of any land animal
Ostrich eyes are really big. Interestingly, analysis of ostrich eyes has showed that they look just like an owl’s (猫头鹰) eye in shape. The overall shape of an owl eye may result from the evolution (进化) of a large eye, which needs to fit into a small head and still be light enough for powerful flight.
However, because they are flightless birds, ostriches are not constrained by the same weight issues, so they have developed the characteristic global shape. This may offer a lot of advantages, especially in relation to the size of the visual (视觉的) field it would offer the bird.
Ostrich eyes are specially formed and the vision of each eye can enlarge to about 155°, which helps them see potential dangers. However, ostriches have a big blind spot (点) above and behind their heads which is caused by the way their eyes sit in their heads to protect them from the burning sun.
Ostrich eyes can focus on things in front of their heads which is invaluable for searching for food. This visual field helps them to find small objects like leaves, seeds, and flowers on the ground. They also sometimes eat small insects so this visual field also helps them target moving insects.
Yet while ostrich eyes are large and round, they are funny compared to their brain size. Still, ostriches have clearly evolved in a way that does not need them to have a large brain. If hiding doesn’t work, an ostrich can usually just outrun any problems that come its way.
8. What do we know about ostriches from the first two paragraphs
A. They are the coolest birds on the planet.
B. They run the fastest among land animals.
C. They share a common ancestor with owls.
D. They have the same eye shape as those of the owls.
9. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “constrained” in paragraph 3
A. Proved. B. Created. C. Limited. D. Supported.
10. Why do ostriches’ eyes have a blind spot above the head
A. To focus on things in the front. B. To avoid the harm from the sun.
C. To ensure a wider view. D. To allow them to see small objects.
11. How do ostriches primarily escape danger
A. By running. B. By hiding.
C. By fighting bravely. D. By keeping eyes open.
D
Encouraging people to exercise outdoors could help to prevent several conditions including depression and type 2 diabetes, the first study of its kind has found. Physical activity in natural environments prevents almost 13,000 cases of non-communicable (非传染的) diseases (NCDs) a year in England and saves treatment costs of more than 100m, researchers from the University of Exeter said.
NCDs are a group of conditions that cannot be spread between people and result in long-term health problems. The most common — including heart and lung disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes — cause 74 percent of global deaths and are on the rise, according to the World Health Organisation.
The Exeter study focused on places such as beaches and coasts, countryside and open spaces in towns and cities, such as parks. Using data including a survey of the English population, the research team estimated (估计) how many cases of six NCDs — major depressive disorder (MDD), type 2 diabetes, ischaemic (局部的) heart disease, ischaemic stroke, colon cancer, and breast cancer — are prevented through nature-based recreational exercise.
In 2019, 22 million adults in England aged 16 years or older visited natural environments at least once a week. Using reported exercise levels, the researchers estimated that this prevented 12,763 cases of NCDs — the vast majority being MDD — creating annual healthcare savings of 108.7m.
Although it has been reported that exercising specifically in natural environments is more helpful for a lot of emotional outcomes compared with urban environments, this is the first such survey conducted on a national wide, the research team said.
“We have almost certainly underestimated the true value of nature-based physical activity in terms of disease prevention,” Dr James Grellier from the University of Exeter Medical School, said. The team hope that their study, published in Environment International, encourages investment in spaces such as parks to make it easier for people to be physically active.
12. What does paragragh 2 mainly about
A. The cause of NCDs. B. The general introduction of NCDs.
C. The treatment of NCDs. D. The prevention of NCDs.
13. What can we infer about outdoor exercise from paragraph 4
A. It attracts people with MDD. B. It increases the cases of NCDs.
C. It has little effect on those under 16. D. It’s very helpful for mental health.
14. What should be built more according to the researchers
A. Parks. B. Gyms. C. Hospitals. D. Apartments.
15. What can be the best title of this text
A. New Cures for NCDs Are Found B. City Residents Need More Exercise
C. Exercise Outdoors to Prevent Disease D. NCDs Are a Major Threat to Humanity

How to Travel Light

____17____. The first time I went to Europe, I read “lay out everything you plan to take, then put away half.” Maybe that’s extreme, but practical. When traveling, we really don’t need as much as we think we do. At worst, you can buy what you forgot to pack. If you want to be practical and travel light, you have to make some tough decisions.
Use packing cubes (立方体). Packing cubes are a game changer. ____18____, which makes things easier to find and makes re-packing much easier. Cubes come in different sizes. I use a standard rectangular (方形) one for most of my clothes and put shirts and underwear in a longer, skinner cube.
Reduce empty spaces. ____19____. Roll up socks and put them in your unused pair of shoes, which go in their own packing cube or bag. Line either side of your suitcase with sleepwear or gym clothes. Use your packing cubes to create a puzzle that all fits together. Try different combinations to find what fits best.
Pack woolen clothing. Woolen clothing is super fine, breathable, warm and easy to pack. ____20____. You can wear a woolen clothing several times before it needs to be washed. That means you can pack a lot less. I pack a few woolen T-shirts and long sleeves, and lay them as needed.
A. Limit what you take
B. It doesn’t get dirty easily
C. Do not leave out necessary things
D. They make traveling light possible
E. They help you organize your things into different parts

When I was fourteen years old, my dad suggested our family pack up and drive 500 miles north to ring in the New Year’s holiday at our 600-square-foot lake cabin (小屋) in northern Michigan.
A few days after Christmas, mom, dad, my brother Dan and I piled into our red SUV and hit the road. Five hours into our trip, I imagined skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and sliding on the frozen lake! I also dreamed of a giant bonfire (篝火) by the lake and we dancing around it.
Suddenly, I came back to reality. Mom slammed on the brakes and our SUV began to fishtail on ice. We turned 180 degrees, then slid backward down the road 1,000 feet before coming to a quick stop in the middle. Our hearts raced as we realized how narrowly we had escaped crashing into the surrounding cars.
Soon thereafter, an officer approached our car to ask if we were okay. He told us the road up ahead was just as icy, so he instructed us to change into 4-wheel drive.
Several hours later, just as the sun was setting, we arrived at our happy place. We all jumped out of the car and ran to the cabin doorway. Dad stuck the key in the lock, but it wouldn’t turn. The lock was frozen.
With no year-round neighbors nearby, Mom and I drove to the local general store to find help while Dad and Dan continued to fight the lock. As luck would have it, this was a Sunday, so no worker would help us until morning. It was after 7:00 p.m. The store was closed, and the temperature was dropping fast; we needed a Plan B. Perhaps we could sleep in the car for the night. Mom opened the back window of the SUV to see how many blankets we had packed. But when she tried closing it, it wouldn’t move. So, there we were with a frozen open car window and a frozen (结冰) closed cabin door.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
Dad picked up a big rock and threw it at the kitchen window

【47题答案】
【答案】
Dad picked up a big rock and threw it at the kitchen window. The glass shattered, making a loud noise that echoed through the frozen forest. Carefully, Dad cleared away the remaining shards of glass and climbed into the cabin. Soon, he managed to unlock the front door from the inside, letting the rest of us in. We quickly gathered around the fireplace, and Dad worked hard to get a fire going. With the warmth slowly spreading through the cabin, our spirits lifted. We went back to the car to collect our belongings and brought them inside.
Although our first day seemed adventurous, we created plenty of great memories that week. We spent our days skiing on the nearby slopes, snowshoeing through the woods, and ice skating on the frozen lake. In the evenings, we gathered around the giant bonfire by the lake, roasting marshmallows and telling stories. The challenges we faced on that first day only brought our family closer together. By the end of the week, we were more thankful than ever for our cozy little cabin in the woods and the time we had spent together.
