Born on August 5, 1930, in northwest Ohio near Wapakoneta, Neil Alden Armstrong was the eldest son of his
parents. Neil’s father travelled to many countries for his job. His family had to move with him to places. Finally,
the Armstrongs moved back to Wapakoneta,Ohio and settled there. As a child, Neil with his siblings Dean and June,
did daily things like weeding (除草) the garden or helping wash clothes.
At the age of two, Neil Armstrong went with his father to see the 1932 Clevel and National Air Races. Seeing
the planes fly, he fell in love with flying. His gift was clear in his ability to read as good as the fifth graders, when
in first grade. He was good at Science and Maths. Through a telescope his neighbour had, he often observed the
stars and especially the moon.
At the age of six, Neil Armstrong took a plane ride in a Tin Goose. During the next few years, he made many
model airplanes in the basement of his house. He began taking flying lessons when he was fourteen, and he got a
pilot’s license when he was just sixteen! He was a Blume High School student and he completed schooling in 1947.
Armstrong was invited by NASA but it was not until 1962 that he decided to become an astronaut. He became
America’s first astronaut in the same year. Seven years later, Armstrong was chosen to command the Apollo 11
mission (使命) of landing on the moon. Armstrong, together with Michael Collins and Edwin Aldrin, left from the
Kennedy Space Center on July 16 that year. A spacecraft named Eagle carried Armstrong and Aldrin to the moon.
At 10: 56 pm on July 20, Armstrong stepped on the moon and said, “That’s one small step for a man, but one giant
leap for mankind.”

French lawmakers have voted to ban the use of mobile phones by students in primary and middle schools.
The government said the new law would improve concentration in class, while helping to prevent cyber (网络
的) bullying and the viewing of unhealthy contents. However, critics said the ban would be difficult to carry out.
The bill was the result of a campaign promise made by President Emmanuel Macron last year. Members of the
National Assembly supported the move in a show of hands on Thursday and it now goes to the Senate (参议院).
Under the new measures, children up to the age of 15 will have to keep their mobile phones out of sight while
at school.
Education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said the measures were “a law for the 21st Century, a law for
addressing the digital revolution”. “Being open to technologies of the future doesn’t mean we have to accept all
their uses,” he told MPs.
A 2016 survey showed that 9 out of every 10 French students aged 12 to 17 owned a mobile mon
complaints by teachers include pupils texting friends and chatting on social media during lessons.
About half of France’s 51,000 primary schools and 7,000 middle schools already ban their use, but ministers
say measures need to be put on a stronger legal basis. Speaking ahead of the parliamentary (议会的) vote, Philippe
Vincent of the school directors’ union SNPDEN told AFP news agency that they supported the move because it
promotes the process.
If approved, the ban is due to come into force for the new academic year in September. The new law does not
make clear what punishment students face for breaking the new rules and lawyers have said that teachers are not
within their rights to take non-dangerous belongings from pupils.

The quality of our seafood has been in the news a lot lately. A new study has found that people who eat
seafood are also eating plastic — 11,000 pieces of microplastic per year to be exact.
Researchers at the University of Ghent in Belgium found that seafood eaters are consuming plastic at a
concerning rate.
“Per serving of mussels (贻贝), which contains about 300 grams of mussel meat, you get 300 pieces of plastic
inside your body,“ researchers wrote. Researchers don’t yet know the implications of eating microplastic, but they
worry that it could have negative consequences on our health.
While we don’t know what microplastic does yet to humans, we do know what it does to sea animals. In prior
studies, scientists have found that when fish eat microplastics, it prevents their growth and changes their feeding
patterns. In fact, fish will stop eating natural sources of nutrients (营养物质), and only go for plastic.
When you’re done using plastic, a small portion may be recycled. However, more than likely it’s in a landfill
or making its way towards the ocean. Once trash hits the water, sea creatures may mistake it for food. This often
leads to poisoning or death. If the ocean animal gets caught for human consumption, the plastic may very well
make its way back to you — on your dinner plate.
According to a study published in Science magazine, eight million tons of plastic go into our waterways every
year. The problem is so serious that scientists say that by 2050 the weight of plastic in our oceans will outweigh
fish. And just because it’s out of sight, doesn’t mean it should be out of mind.
There’s no immediate way to prevent microplastic from ending up in your body .However, you can help
reduce the amount of plastic reaching rivers, lakes and oceans in the first place. You can make a difference with
your choices every day. Even small changes will add up. While your salmon dinner may contain microplastic, you
can help prevent the future generations from having that same problem.
