Kenya is a microcosm of Africa. So, in case Kenya doesn’t already feature on your list of dream destinations, Jane Barsby, a travel writer, tells you why it should.
The Masai Mara
Home to the“greatest wildlife show on earth” - the annual migration of one-and-a-half million wildebeest and their accompanying animals - the Masai Mara remains Kenya’s most famous reserve thanks to the brilliance of its game viewing.
Walking is not allowed here, so if you’d like to hike across the Greater Mara, visit one of the many private conservancies that border the reserve.
The Karen District
Perhaps the greatest single influence on the country’s tourism was the Danish writer Karen Blixen, whose book Out of Africa begins with the words, “I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills”, and you can visit his house in the Karen district, where it has been turned into a museum.
While in Karen, why not stroke a giraffe at the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife Giraffe Centre or cuddle a baby elephant at the Wildlife Trust’s Elephant Shelter
Gedi
On the silver-blue Swahili coastline are the remains of the thirteenth-century town of Gedi, which was allegedly deserted by its occupants at the approach of cannibals (食人族). Now it is a picturesque ruin with wretched streets, market places, palaces and mosques, all buried in the dense coastal forest.
Near the entrance to Gedi is Kipepeo, a butterfly farm where you can witness the entire cycle of a butterfly’s life.
Western Kenya
For an entirely different take on Kenya, visit western Kenya - famous for its green quilt of tea bushes which once you’ve sipped, you’ ll never regard this delicious drink in quite the same light again.
For the ultimate experience spend a night or two at the Kericho Tea Hotel.
1. Which activity is available in the Karen district
A. Visiting a science museum.
B. Interacting with wild animals.
C. Watching butterflies’ life cycle.
D. Exploring the local cuisine.
2. Where can you enjoy ocean views
A. Gedi. B. The Karen District.
C. Western Kenya. D. The Masai Mara.

As I’ve grown older, my connection to nature has become stronger. Recently, I was fortunate to spend a good part of a week immersed in the wilderness, following the teachings of my father from my childhood. Ever since I was 10, my sister, father, and I would load up his canoe (独木舟) with supplies and venture into the heart of Algonquin Park.
There were years when I ignored the call of Algonquin, caught up in the busyness of life — graduate school, and raising young children. It all felt overwhelming. But as time passed, my children grew older, and the call of Algonquin grew louder. With the support of my family, I finally heeded that call again, and started planning to take part in one of our family trips there.
My family’s expertise in the outdoors has been invaluable for such trips. My sister, a teacher, carefully plans our trips while my dad, a skilled outdoorsman, effortlessly handles tasks like setting up camp and preparing meals. And my husband is really strong and good at moving things around.
But, as the trip got closer, my husband suddenly hurt his leg. And suddenly, I was faced with managing the first part of the trip as the only adult. Could I drive my daughters, alone, to Algonquin’s remote north boundary to meet my dad and stepmom Could I steer (驾驶) the canoe Could I carry the canoe
I had driven across Canada alone, in my twenties, well before Google Maps. I was pretty sure I could steer if we kept to smaller lakes that were less likely to become windswept. But I feared carrying a canoe. Plus, lifting it onto my shoulders seemed impossible for someone of my strength.
But Algonquin was calling me. I channeled the fearless independence of my younger self and called Dad. “If we shorten the route and I find a lightweight canoe, the girls and I are coming,” I told him.
With guidance from YouTube and my sister, I mastered the technique of lifting the canoe onto my shoulders and on the day, I unloaded it without a hitch.
The trip was serene. I was reunited with the beauty of Algonquin — the majestic red pines, serene lakes, and the sense of peace that comes with being in the wilderness. This journey felt like a pilgrimage (朝圣), reconnecting me with my adventurous younger self who isn’t extinct, just out of practice.
4. What contributed to my taking part in a family trip again
A. Ignorance of the call of Algonquin. B. Being caught up in the busyness of life.
C. My children getting older and louder. D. Confidence in family and support from them.
5. Which of the following was the author confident of
A. Managing the first part of the trip. B. Steering canoe in small and calm lakes.
C. Carrying the canoe by herself. D. Lifting the canoe onto her shoulders.
6. What kind of person can we learn about the author
A. Independent and humorous. B. Pessimistic and unmotivated.
C. Nature-loving and adventurous. D. Ambitious and self-confident.
7. What message is mainly conveyed in the text
A. It’s never too late for a woman to take a risk.
B. Your family is there for you whatever happens.
C. You should find and stick to what you are good at.
D. Reunion with nature brings back one’s real self.
C
If you go back in history far enough, you’ll come to a time when there were no clocks or watches. Shadow clocks, such as sundials, were a “hot” item around 1500 BC. But these were only useful during the daytime and only on sunny days. Soon better ways were invented.
Ancient Chinese knotted (打结) a rope in equal distance, and set it aflame. As fire passed each knot, a period of time was counted off. Later, they spaced weights evenly along the rope and placed a bell beneath it. As the rope burned, the weights would drop and “ring out” the time! Chinese could even smell time passing! Incense (香) was laid in a network-structured plate, with different types of incense for different hours. As the incense burned, they knew it was time to get up!
Another ancient clock is called sandglass — or hourglass. It uses the flow of sand to measure a specific amount of time. The earliest known hourglass dates back to ancient Egypt around the 14th century BC. In most cases, the available sand was too coarse to run smoothly inside these sandglasses, so powdered eggshells had been selected as an alternative.
Clocks using flowing water are called a clepsydra. It released a specified quantity of water from one container to another, taking a particular time to do so. Perhaps the earliest came from Egypt around 1600 BC. The Greek and Roman army also used water-clocks to measure shift-work like night watches. It was more reliable than oil lamp, but the water flow still depended on the variation of water pressure in the container.
Today highly accurate timekeeping instruments set the beat for most of our electronic devices and the search for further development continues.
8. In ancient China, time could be told by __________.
A. bell volume B. rope weight C. incense smells D. knot size
9. What does the underlined word “coarse” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Loose. B. Rough. C. Firm. D. Soft.
10. What might be a drawback of a clepsydra
A. It was influenced by water pressure. B. It required constant attention.
C. It was less portable than the oil lamp. D. It had limited water capacity.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To introduce varieties of ancient timers. B. To show respect for the greatness of time.
C. To compare the methods of marking time. D. To describe civilization of the old times.
D
You might think as climate change warms the tundra (冻原) — melting surface snow and ice and thawing permafrost (冻土) — there should be more surface water. Existing lakes should be expanding because of this extra water, and new ones should also be making their appearance. Recently, however, scientists have observed not just shrinking lakes but lakes that have completely disappeared. A paper published this year in Nature Climate Change found widespread lake loss across the Arctic over the past 20 years.
Many scientists shared the commonsense expectation that as permafrost thawed (融化), lakes would at first expand because of the increased meltwater flowing into them. Eventually, researchers projected, progressive warming during the 21st and 22 centuries would dry out the Arctic. But now it looks as if Arctic lakes are disappearing a century or more sooner than they were predicted to.
What is causing this to happen Basically, the ground is becoming more permeable (有渗透性的). We talk about “solid ground”, but its particles of rock, mineral and organic matter actually have spaces between them. Outside the Arctic, those spaces are filled with air or water; surface water drains into them. Arctic landscapes are different. In permafrost, the spaces are filled with solid ice, so liquid water cannot readily penetrate through them. But when the permafrost thaws, water can flow downward. So these far northern lakes are disappearing because surface water can drain rapidly into the subsurface as the permafrost warms up.
Why did scientists miss this One reason is that most climate models assume that permafrost thaw is driven only by warming air. New evidence suggests that rainfall is now contributing substantially to permafrost loss. The rainfall carries heat into the ground. Yet none of the models included such processes. This is a good example of why — no matter how sophisticated models are or may one day become—we will still need to continue making direct observations of the natural world.
Lakes make up as much as 40 percent of the Arctic’s lowlands, where they provide crucial freshwater for Indigenous communities and critical habitats for a wide range of plants and animal life. The loss of marshy (湿地的) areas that accompany these lakes can also lead to an increase in wildfires, which, in turn, only serves to melt more permafrost. This permafrost hold a huge amount of methane, which could end up dramatically accelerating global warming.
12. What surprised scientists according to the first two paragraphs
A. The quicker disappearance of Arctic lakes.
B. The appearance of new lakes in the Arctic.
C. The expansion of existing lakes in the Arctic.
D. The widespread lake shrinkage across the Arctic.
13. What is causing the widespread lake loss in the Arctic
A. The downward flow of surface water in lakes.
B. The outward flowing water from melting snow.
C. The drainage of water through holes in the solid ground.
D. The rapid disappearance of lake water due to the warming air.
14. Why did scientists fail to make correct prediction about the Arctic lakes
A. They didn’t employ sophisticated enough models.
B. They made their predictions based on insufficient data.
C. They didn’t get a close-up look at the natural world at all.
D. They didn’t consider the effect of rainfall on permafrost thaw.
15. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The major contributors to global warming.
B. The side effects of the Arctic lake loss.
C. The role of permafrost in controlling global warming.
D. The measures being taken to fight against Arctic lake loss.

Summer vacation starting, Steve and I planned to play baseball every day, aiming to join the freshman team. “If you make it into the team, I’ll buy you a new baseball glove as a present.” My mom’s promise echoed in my mind as I excitedly waited for Steve, staring at my worn-out glove.
But today I had to clean Mrs. Thompson’s garage first. She was weakened by old age, so my mom always volunteered me to help her. Mom wouldn’t let me accept any money, thinking she didn’t have much, and literally, I never minded — after all, Mrs. Thompson had knitted me five sweaters and always made me cakes. Most importantly, it was the right thing to do.
Steve came rushing out of his house, and I explained the situation. As expected, he immediately said, “Alright, I’ll help.”
We instantly got to work. The garage was a mess of boxes, but we gathered all our energy and soon brought the cleanup to an end. When arranging the last box, however, I nudged the shelf accidentally. Before I could react, a vase fell and crashed to the ground, broken into pieces.
I froze, my heart pounding. The vase was beautiful with delicate designs, which must have cost a fortune. Glancing at the open garage door, I suggested, “Maybe I can just sweep this up. Mrs. Thompson won’t even notice.” I responded fast and piled the pieces into the trash bin. But Steve’s expression darkened. “That’s not how it works. You should tell her what happened.”
I tried to justify myself, telling all the chores I’d done for Mrs. Thompson without pay. I even argued that it wasn’t my responsibility to pay for something I didn’t destroy on purpose. However, Steve wasn’t buying it, his voice firm. “You’re better than that. Be responsible.”
We stood there in silence, the weight of the moment hanging between us. Just then, Mrs. Thompson walked in, giving us a scare. She smiled warmly, unaware of the whole thing. “Boys, I baked a chocolate cake. Now come in for a piece. I really appreciate all your help.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】Dear Karry,
I am glad to hear that you won the Gloria Barron National Prize for Young Heroes. Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on this incredible honor!
Your dedication to cleaning up the coast is truly inspiring. Not only have you removed harmful plastic waste that endangers wildlife, but you have also raised awareness within your community about the importance of environmental conservation. Your efforts have proven that even small actions taken by teenagers can spark meaningful difference. Greatly encouraged by your example, I now feel a stronger sense of responsibility to reduce my daily waste and actively participate in local environmental initiatives.
Keep up the amazing work! I wish you continued success in all your future projects.
Love,
Li Hua
第二节 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】
Hesitantly, we entered the room and I noticed a gift box on the table beside the cake. “Could it be for me ” I wondered. Mrs. Thompson read my thoughts, “Your mom mentioned you’ re training for the baseball team, so I prepared this for you. Open it!” I unwrapped the box and a brand-new baseball glove was in sight! Immense guilt grew when I recalled all she did for me. Steve’s words also struck me, urging me to admit the mistake. I said in a low voice, “Mrs. Thompson, I’m sorry for breaking your vase in the garage by accident. I should pay for it.”
Having said that, I waited nervously for Mrs. Thompson to speak up. However, instead of disappointment, she just laughed. “Oh, that old vase was just a cheap thing I picked up at a dollar store. It is far less precious than your help and honesty. Don’t worry about it. Let’s enjoy the cake!” A bit relieved, I exchanged a look with Steve, eager to break in my new glove on the field and expecting another visit to Mrs. Thompson’s house. In his eyes, this time, shone a bright glimmer approving of my recovered sense of responsibility.
