一、阅读理解
Many kids help their parents to do chores such as washing the dishes, cleaning the floors and taking out the rubbish in the house. And some kids get money or other rewards from their parents, such as playing computer games for 20 minutes.
But some people do not think that kids should get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Susie Walton, a parenting educator. She believes that if kids get rewards, they will think that work isn’t worth (值得) doing unless they can get something. For example, kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will clean the floor if their parents reward them for it. Susie said, “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that it’s all the family members’ job to keep their homes clean.”
Other people have different opinions (观点). They believe that money or other rewards can encourage (鼓励) kids to do more chores. It also teaches them a real world lesson that we need to work to make money. Now, there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and gifts that can be used either online or in the real world. With the ChoreMonster app, kids get points after doing chores. Kids can exchange (交换) their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall.
What do you think Should kids be rewarded for doing chores Or should kids help out with their homes without getting anything

Half of them come from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The others are from small villages. We made a diagram (图表) of the result of our survey. Let’s have a look at it. We found out that teenagers from small villages do more chores than those from big cities. Maybe it is because they live a harder life. Our advice to parents in big cities is that parents should give their children some chores to do. Doing chores teaches teenagers to take care of themselves.

When you finish some chores at home, will your parents give you a reward (奖励) It is common for parents to do that. But some people do not think it is a good idea.
One of them is Susie Walton, an education expert. She believes if kids get rewards, they will think that housework is not worth (值得) doing unless they get something in return. Kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will if their parents reward them for it. Walton also said, “A home is a living place for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that we all should play our part in keeping our home clean.”
Other people don’t think so. They believe that rewards encourage kids to do more chores. Rewarding also teaches them real world lessons. They can learn that we need to work to make money.
Now, there are also mobile phone apps like ChoreMonster. With the app, kids get points after doing chores. After getting some points, they can do something they like. For example, parents will allow them to play video games for half an hour if they get 80 points.
So each side seems to have their own reasons. Whether you give children rewards depends on your own ideas. Maybe you have better ways to solve this problem.

There are certain things you never imagine yourself saying.
“I just got a worm in my eye!” is one of them.
And yet I did say it—I screamed it, actually.
The family was all here and we were in the garden, when I saw a worm nearby. I asked my six-year-old grandson to come over and remove the worm. He picked up the worm, studied it quickly and then threw it into the air.
The worm quickly fell back to earth, landing on my face against my left eyelid. That’s when the screaming started and the jumping up and down.
You know how they say when you meet a small creature, that the small creature is just as afraid of you as you are of it They lie.
The worm showed no fear. I, however, am still having nightmares about the experience, which was several days ago.
The most important thing in all this is that my grandson said he was sorry to me.
I’d just been reading a book that makes a connection between adults doing the slow and hard work of teaching manners to children and greater levels of civility in society.
Table manners, language manners and even manners in dress all show levels of self-control.
Having self-control limits what we say and how we behave, making many of us appear a good deal better than we really are.
Good manners also have the possibility to make mealtime a pleasant experience, even with small children.
All of my grandchildren, except the ones that can’t yet talk, ask to be excused before leaving the table.
It is a sign of respect for others at the table and a sign of respect for the meal itself. It’s also more pleasant than pushing one’s chair back and running for the back yard.
Those tall enough, and even those not tall enough, also take their dishes to the kitchen.
Manners are what civilize us—around our tables, in our families, homes and our communities.
So when a little boy has the courage to apologize to a grandma who is screaming and jumping up and down, at least we know that our years of teaching young people manners are paying off—one worm at a time.
34.Where were they when the author saw a worm
A.In the house. B.In the garden.
C.In the park. D.In the back yard.

36.What does the underlined word “nightmares” mean
A.好运 B.噩梦 C.回忆 D.愿望
37.The author believed that his grandson’s apology is________.
A.a good manner B.a bad behavior C.unnecessary D.a must
38.What does the passage tell us
A.The importance of apology. B.The importance of good manners.
C.Many kinds of good manners. D.A story of a worm.

Some families think that everyone in the family should do housework, and that kids shouldn’t be paid for doing so. The supporters(支持者), however, believe that kids should get paid, and that the money they get will help kids learn important skills of how to use it. But for those who choose to give the money, it can be a headache deciding on how much they should give, especially in these difficult economic(经济的)times. A good idea is that you can keep records of how much you spend on your child daily for two weeks and then decide how much you should give according to the average(平均的)daily amount. Now more and more Chinese teenagers find life more difficult without their parents. They don’t know how to do housework, because their parents do almost everything for them at home. This is a big problem.
Joy is 14 years old. One day her parents went on a trip to Shanghai, so she had to stay at home alone. At first she thought she would be happy because her parents were not in. She could do everything that she liked. But it was seven o’clock in the evening, and she felt hungry. “Oh, it’s time to have supper. Where can I get my food ” she said to herself. Later she found some food in the fridge, but she didn’t know how to cook. At that moment, she missed her parents very much. At last she could only go to a restaurant to eat.
Many of teenagers are the same as Joy. So I think they should learn some basic life skills, like cooking, tidying up their rooms or dressing themselves. They shouldn’t depend too much on their parents.
