First-Year Learning Community
第 4页/共 14页
Making the jump from high school to university is exciting but sometimes a little challenging. To make
university life easier, all first-year Rotman Commerce students are automatically involved in a First-Year Learning
Community, or FYLC for short.
Learning Community Structure
FYLC is a co-curricular program—meaning that it’s not for credits. There’s no homework and no pressure. It’
s just a way for us to support your success in first year by helping you develop skills and make connections. Even
though it’s not for credits, it is an essential part of your first year at Rotman Commerce and you will receive a
notation (评注) on your academic record upon completion!
Each FYLC has between 25 to 30 members and is a great way to meet your classmates, staff and external
experts, make friends, form study groups and develop academic and personal skills. You’ll also get an introduction
to the resources, opportunities, culture and benefits of the campus and its surrounding community—all in a relaxed,
student-led atmosphere.
The mentors (导师) lead the FYLC — they’re third and fourth-year Rotman Commerce students who have
been in your shoes and know what it’s like to be in first year. They want to help you make friends in your classes,
so you’ll always know people who can support you in your studies!
Schedule
Your FYLC group will meet every other week. After you’ve registered for your courses in July, we will
arrange a FYLC group for you that does not conflict with any of your chosen courses. We’ll send you your
schedule on 15th August. Most FYLCs take place on Tuesday/ Thursday/ Friday from 2:00-3:30 pm.

It started as a poem, filled with lines inviting readers to listen to “the whisper” and act. Then it became a
children’s book with airy illustrations. Now, Tom Rivett-Carnac’s children’s book What Happened When We All
Stopped has become a beautiful animated (动画) poem narrated (讲述) by UN Messenger of Peace Jane Goodall.
In Tom Rivett-Carnac’s book, there is a sense of hope and an invitation to carry on a meaningful project requiring
the participation of all the citizens of the world. The book was illustrated by Tom Rivett-Carnac’s sister, Bee
Rivett-Carnac, and was specifically intended to stimulate inspiration to take environmental action.
Tom Rivett-Carnac has been working on issues like climate change for the past 20 years. He is known for his
work as a political strategist on The Paris Climate Change Agreement. He thought a book addressing some of the
most challenging times in human history would be useful for children and parents alike. “As a father of two young
children, I know how hard it can be to raise these subjects, which seem so abstract and alarming, but the
fundamental message in this poem is one of hope,” says Tom Rivett-Carnac. “The future is unwritten. What
happens next is up to us. We who are here now get to choose how the next chapter of the human story will unfold
— and we must choose well.”
Dr. Jane Goodall, who was inspired by the original poem, was eager to provide the narration. “This wonderful
story helps parents and their children to find a way of living in harmony with nature,” Goodall explains. “I hope
this storybook inspires people of all ages to play their part in healing (治愈) the harm we have suffered so that
together we can create a new future.”
The animated video was created by TED-Ed’s animation team and breathed a new expression and urgency
into Tom Rivett-Carnac’s work. It’s just over three minutes in length, but the animation takes the audience on a vast
journey of “what ifs” and an exploration into What Happened When We All Stopped.
24. Why did Tom Rivett-Carnac create the book

25. What can be inferred from Dr. Jane Goodall’s words about the book
A. It is only intended for children.
B. It can promote family relationships.
C. It helps people get along better with nature.
D. It stimulates children’s imagination.
26. Which can best describe the animated video
A. Expressive. B. Relaxing.
C. Imprecise. D. Boring.
27. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To praise the work of Jane Goodall.

With its upcoming scientific research center in Uzbekistan, Zaha Hadid Architects has taken a low-tech
approach to maintaining a comfortable temperature. The eye-catching building will feature a clever passive cooling
system inspired by traditional local architecture.
Named after an important 15th Century poet, author and statesman, the Alisher Navoi International Scientific
Research Center will be defined by large curvy (弯曲的) arches and large glass windows. Its overall form is similar
to the traditional wind catching towers of Middle Eastern architecture that have been used for centuries to help
reduce the desert heat.
Its curvy supporting arches, which are being built from local brick, are designed as hollow (空的) structures
with openings that draw the wind into the building. In the hottest summer months, this system will be supported by
some electric fans to cool the air before it enters the structure.
When it’s not windy, the hollow arched structures will also naturally create a chimney (烟囱) effect, allowing
warmer air to escape through the openings at the top of each arch. This works because warm air naturally rises and
escapes, creating a pressure difference that in turn draws in cooler air from lower levels and promotes air cycle
throughout the building. Recent Stirling Prize winner New Library, Magdalene College also used the technique.
“These cooling principles are enhanced by the day-night cycle, extracting warmer air while trapping cooler air

below,” explains Zaha Hadid Architects. “Coupled with high heat mass of the center’s structure, the conditions of
comfort can be maintained with minimal energy consumption. Skylights bring natural light into the heart of the
center while deep roof overhangs provide its wall with effective shading in summer yet permit winter sun into the
building to warm the interiors.”
Thanks to its passive design, the interior of the research center will be comfortable to stay in. With 13
permanent exhibition halls, measuring 23,000 sqm, it will encourage dialogue between literary education, research
and the performing arts.
28. What is special about Alisher Navoi International Scientific Research Center
A. Its temperature-controlling method.
B. Its original design by a famous poet.
C. Its traditional wind catching towers.
D. Its high-technology cooling system.
29. What role do the hollow supporting arches play in the building
A. They support the weight of the structure.
B. They allow wind in to cool the air inside.
C. They create a visually appealing beauty.
D. They trap heat to warm the building in winter.
30. Why is New Library of Magdalene College mentioned in Paragraph 4
A. To compare different design philosophies.
B. To explain the origin of the technique.
C. To show the technique’s wide application.
D. To get the research center well-known.
31. What does Zaha Hadid Architects think of the passive cooling system
A. It requires very little energy.
B. It is a mixed-tech cooling design.
C. It integrates the beauty of old and new.
D. It is better than that of traditional architecture.

“These are the people in your neighborhood,” goes the familiar “Sesame Street” chorus. The classic song
refers to the baker, the postal worker and others who keep a residential area fed, happy and smiling. Most important
第 8页/共 14页
on this list, though, is the simple title of “neighbor.”
An illustrated article in Yes! magazine shows the powerful ways in which knowing our neighbors builds
positive, connected communities. In fact, the most casual (随意的) social connections between neighbors can have
the biggest impact.
“ ‘Small talk’ used to have a bad rap,” writes Susan Lazarovic, “but the latest science tells us that talking
about the weather with the crossing guard does make us happier.”
She points out that an average drill is used for just 13 minutes in its lifetime. When you borrow a neighbor’s
drill, you’ re not substantially increasing its use though you are saving yourself the time and expense of a trip to the
hardware store. More meaningfully, you’re taking an opportunity to connect with your neighbor, even if it’s just to
exchange quick pleasantries as you borrow and return the tool.
Good things come from these simple exchanges, from a social cushion (缓冲) to rely on if you ever need to
have a difficult conversation with a neighbor, to real friendships.
In one of many humorous moments in the piece, Lazarovic describes a man borrowing a cup of sugar from his
neighbor. His speech jokingly reads, “I’m asking you for sugar so that you’ll ask me for sugar so that we’ll have
lots of delicious baked goods and a friendly social life.”
At a time when loneliness is such a common problem that it is often referred to as an “epidemic (流行病),”
Lazarovic’s message is an inspiring reminder that it doesn’t take much to develop a positive, connected community.
Just like a cup of sugar, with small talk, a little goes a long way.
32 What is the main focus of the song “Sesame Street”
A. The people in the neighborhood and their roles.
B. The happiness to keep a residential area well fed.
C. The informal social connections between neighbors.
D. The importance of the baker and the postal worker.
33. What does the underlined word “rap” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Reputation. B. Rhyme.
C. Cause. D. Theme.
34. What matters most in borrowing a neighbor’s drill
A. Saving time and money.
B. Improving communication skills.
第 9页/共 14页
C. Increasing the drill’s lifetime usage.
D. Building friendships between neighbors.
35. What is the best title of the text
A. The Impact of an Illustrated Magazine.
B. The Positive Power of Casual Social Connections.
C. The Science Behind Informal Conversations.
D. The Way to Develop a Harmonious Community.

Tom was an exceptionally talented young athlete. He had a passion for basketball. From the moment he first
held a basketball, Tom knew that it was more than just a game to him — it was his dream. His commitment and
natural skill earned him a spot on his high school team, where he quickly became the star player.
One day, during a crucial playoff game, Tom found himself in a challenging situation. The score was tied, and
there was only one minute left on the clock. The ball ended up in Tom’s hands after an intense battle on the
basketball court. He took a deep breath, dribbled (带球) past his defender, and aimed for the basket. As Tom was
jumping to shoot, he hurt his ankle badly. He fell to the ground, holding his ankle in pain. The crowd held their
breath, watching anxiously as the team’s medical staff rushed onto the court. Tom’s coach and teammates gathered
around him, offering words of support and concern. After a few tense minutes, they helped Tom off the court on a
stretcher (担架).
Backstage, the medical team conducted an examination and confirmed that Tom had suffered a severe sprain
(扭伤), ruling him out for the rest of the playoff series. The injury was severe, and doctors told him he would be
sidelined for several months. Tom was frustrated and watched helplessly as his teammates struggled without him.
The season ended in disappointment, and Tom couldn’t shake the feeling that he had let everyone down.
The following months were some of the hardest Tom had ever experienced. The process of treatment was very

difficult, and there were days when he felt like giving up. He spent hours watching videos of past games and
imagining how things could have been different if he hadn’t gotten injured. His spirits were low, and he started

67. One evening, Tom received a letter from his coach. It read, “Basketball isn’t just about physical strength; it’s

extraordinary performances, inspiring his teammates with his unwavering spirit. In the championship game, with
seconds left on the clock, Tom scored the winning shot, securing victory for his team.
