Here we will take a look at some of the most famous Renaissance artists.
Leonardo da Vinci
Often referred to as a “Renaissance man”, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) not only left behind notebooks filled with scientific observations and illustrations, but was also known for his works of art such as Virgin of the Rocks, Lady With an Ermine, Vitruvian Man, the Last Supper, the Mona Lisa. The last one still remains as the most visited work of art in the world.
Michelangelo Buonarroti
Known for his attention to detail and his knowledge of human body, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) is celebrated as one of history’s finest sculptors. During his lifetime, the Florentine artist created several masterpieces admired for their lifelike details. These works include the iconic David (1501-1504) housed in Florence’s Galleria dell’Accademia, the monumental Pieta (1513-1515) in the Vatican, and his series of Dying Slaves (1513-1515) located in the Louvre.
Tiziano Vecelli
Among the great names of the Italian Renaissance — Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino — there is also Tiziano Vecelli (1488-1576), the master of color. Sacred and Profane Love(1514) is one of the artist’s early paintings, which was made to commemorate (纪念) the marriage of the man who bought it. This work is an excellent example of Tiziano’s mastery of color.

22. Where is Pieta permanently displayed
A. In the Louvre. B. In Sistine Chapel. C. In the Vatican. D. In Galleria dell’Accademia.

Elon Musk has been talking about turning the social media platform Twitter into X for months, while being vague about what that exactly means. Does X represent a major business experiment A totally new concept for on-line living Or is it simply one man’s addiction to the 24th letter of the alphabet
Probably it’s all of the above, according to Ashlee Vance, the author of Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future. In one of his earliest business adventures, Musk called his online bank X. com. That name was later dropped when the platform was bought by a competitor and became PayPal.
“Everyone tried to talk him out of naming the company that back then, but he really liked it and refused to give in,” said Vance.
X is already in the name of Tesla’s third electric car model, which was announced to the public in 2015. His spaceflight company is called SpaceX. In 2020, Musk even named his youngest son “X E A-12”.
But lately, naming his social media platform “X” may refer to Musk’s newest ambition, building an “everything app” like China’s popular WeChat. “He wants to create an app similar to how WeChat is used in China, where it’s part of day-to-day life. You use it to communicate, to consume news, to buy things, to pay your rent, to make appointments with your doctor and even to pay fines,” said Vance. “Following the WeChat model makes sense with what Musk wants for Twitter. The company clearly needs a new, bigger business if it’s to make the type of money that would justify his investment and satisfy his ambition.”
But social media experts are questioning about Musk’s “everything app”. “I’m not sure he has enough trust from his user base to get people to actually exchange money or attach any type of financial institution to his app,” Jennifer Grygiel, a professor at Syracuse University, told NPR. “I think this is a way to destroy it, instead of recreating it as something else.”
24. Which is closest in meaning to “vague” underlined in paragraph 1
A. Unspecific. B. Curious. C. Uninterested. D. Eager.
25. What does the X in “X E A-12” most probably stand for
A. Musk’s plan to have 26 babies. B. Musk’s blind love for the letter X.
C. Musk’s doubt about his son’s DNA. D. Musk’s ambition to create a new business.
26. What does Ashlee Vance mean in paragraph 5
A. Musk paid too much to buy Twitter. B. WeChat is more popular than Twitter.
C. X may indicate Musk’s new business plan. D. It is not safe to model X on China’s WeChat.
27. What is Jennifer Grygiel’s attitude to the “everything app”
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
C
When Thomas Edison hit a wall with his inventions, he would nap in an armchair while holding a steel ball. As he started to fall asleep and his muscles relaxed, the ball would strike the floor, waking him with insights into his problems. Or so the story goes.
Thomas Edison was somewhat right. Now, more than 100 years later, scientists have repeated the trick in a lab, revealing that the famous inventor was on to something. People following his recipe tripled(使增三倍) their chances of solving a math problem. The trick was to wake up in the transition(过渡) between sleep and wakefulness, just before deep sleep. In this transitional period, we are not quite awake, but also not deeply asleep. It can be as short as a minute and occurs right when we start to doze off(打盹).
Researchers recruited(招募)more than 100 easy sleepers, each of whom was given a math test with a hidden rule for the answer. By recording brain activity, they found that those who napped and were interrupted during the first phase of sleep were three times better at finding the hidden key to the problem than those who remained awake.
The creative effect happened even for people who spent just 15 seconds in the first sleep stage. But the trick didn't work for those who reached later stages of sleep. “Our findings suggest there is a creative sweet spot during sleep at the beginning,” says author Delphine Oudiette, a sleep researcher at the Paris Brain Institute. “It is a small window which can disappear if you wake up too early or sleep too deep.”
The study team also identified a brain activity pattern linked to the creativity-boosting phase: moderate levels of brain waves at a slow frequency known as alpha, associated with relaxation, and low levels of delta waves, a feature of deep sleep. Oudiette says researchers can now focus on this brain signature when investigating the neural mechanisms (神经机制) of creative problem-solving. The team has already planned an experiment to help people reach a creative zone by monitoring their brain waves in real time. “Edison was great,” Oudiette says, “and now we have a lot more to explore.”
28. What does the underlined phrase “was on to something” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Discovered the truth. B. Was absorbed in math puzzles.
C. Started the experiment. D. Was engaged in laboratory work.
29. According to the research, the trick of promoting creativity lies in
A. gaining adequate deep sleep B. discovering the hidden rules of problems
C. following Edison's life style D. waking up right after nodding off to sleep
30. Why did the researchers record brain activity of the sleepers
A. To evaluate their sleep efficiency. B. To measure their amount of sleep.
C. To assess their levels of intelligence. D. To compare their creative thinking abilities.
31. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Supporting evidence for the research results.
B. Potential application of the research findings.
C. A further explanation of the research methods.
D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.

Marco Polo’s tales inspired European explorers to search for sea routes (路线) from west to east. However, businessmen and explorers from the East set sail from east to west many years before Columbus first did.
In ancient times, silk from China found its way over land to India, the Middle East, and Rome, along what became known as the Silk Road. But another trading route across the sea was also formed along the coasts of the Indian Ocean, centered around Ceylon. Here, businessmen from China and many other places met to exchange goods.
Later, the Ming Dynasty further developed relations with these regions. Between 1405 and 1433, seven large fleets (舰队) sailed west on voyages of trade and exploration. Under the command of Zheng He, they set sail from the South China Sea across the Indian Ocean to the mouth of the Red Sea, and then to the east coast of Africa. African royal families sent gifts such as giraffes as gestures of friendship in return for silk, and spices. Although China stopped further expeditions (远征) after 1433, these land and sea routes remained active for centuries.
To reach out across the sea remains a strong desire today. The ancient sea routes travelled by Zheng He are being revisited with the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which is part of the Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路倡议). The aim of this initiative is to encourage cooperation and trade across the historic Silk Road areas, and strengthen the relations between China and the rest of the world. China has poured billions of money in systems and services along these routes, which will help to greatly develop the whole area for the benefit of future trade and cultural exchange.
China has also joined its friends across the sea on other important projects. In recent years, China has joined other nations on several expeditions to explore the Arctic. From a scientific point of view, there is an urgent need to study the Arctic in order to understand climate change and its effects.
32. What do we know about the ancient sea routes
A. The Silk Road existed longer than the sea routes.
B. It was Columbus who first explored the sea routes.
C. Businessmen travelled along the sea route for their king.
D. The sea route was extended along the Indian Ocean coasts.
33. What can be inferred about China’s expeditions in the Ming Dynasty
A. They were stopped for economic reasons.
B. They were considered to be a waste of money.
C. They also had an influence on the world trade.
D. Seven large fleets set sail from the East China Sea.
34. What’s the goal of China’s Belt and Road Initiative
A. To satisfy people’s strong desire and need.
B. To promote trade and develop friendships.
C. To understand the climate change and its effects.
D. To improve the system and service along the routes.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. The Belt and Road Initiative. B. The history of Silk Road.
C. Brave businessmen and explorers. D. China’s exploration across the sea.

Armed with two over-packed suitcases,we arrived at the airport just in time for my flight. “Well, here we are, the airport,” my sister said with a sigh. As I watched her unload my luggage, I could see the sadness in her eyes. This was not easy on her either. We had both been dreading (害怕) this moment for the past week. One last hug and a final good-bye and I would be on my way to a new life abroad, leaving my beloved sister behind.
All my life I had loved airports. To me they were some kind of magic gateway to the world,a place from which to start great holidays and adventures. But today it seemed like a cold and heartless place. I looked at my sister and even though her eyes were filled with tears, she was trying to keep a brave face. “You’d better go or you’ll miss your flight,” she said.
“I’ll miss you,” I replied, and with those last words I was off. As promised, I did not look back, but by the time I reached the customs office I was sobbing (啜泣). “Cheer up, love,” the tall customs officer said with a smile. “It’s not the end of the world, you know.” But to me it was the end of the world, as I had known it.
While boarding the plane I was still crying. I did not have the energy to put my bag in the overhead locker, so I stuffed it on the empty seat next to mine. As I settled into my chair, a feeling of sadness overwhelmed me. I felt like my best friend had just been taken away from me.
Growing up, my sister and I would do everything together. Born barely fifteen months apart we not only looked alike, we were alike. Whenever one of us need something, the other one would come along. When the time came for us to go to college, we also went together. But now that our college days were over and I was off to a foreign country, all I had left were my memories.

Dear Rick,
I’m delighted to know that you are going to write an article about Chinese poems.
My favorite poet is Du Fu, who is regarded as one of the greatest poets in Chinese history. He is quite productive, having left about 1, 500 poems behind, most of which are still popular today. I love him not only because he has written many great poems, but because he has shown deep concern for the ordinary people.
I think Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet, a 58-minute documentary produced by BBC, might be of great help. It has traced Du’s steps all over China and translated 15 of his poems into English. I’m sure you will enjoy it!
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
续写作文
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly the plane shook heavily and the bag next to me fell on the floor. Startled, I quickly reached down to pick it up, and as I did, a small notebook fell out from the bag. I opened it and immediately recognized my sister’s handwriting. It was a diary she had secretly slipped into my bag before I left. Flipping through the pages, I found heartfelt messages, memories of our childhood, and words of encouragement for my new journey. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the depth of her love and support, even in my absence.
Paragraph 2:
I spent the rest of the flight reading about my sister’s diary. Her words on the page brought a bittersweet mix of emotions, reminding me of the bond we shared and the strength she always gave me. As I read through the diary, I felt a sense of warmth and comfort, as if she were right there beside me. It was a precious gift that I would cherish throughout my time abroad, a reminder of the unbreakable connection between us despite the physical distance. Holding onto the diary, I knew that no matter where life took me, my sister would always be with me in spirit.

encouraged to buy vegetables at the market and book entry tickets to the museum.During the
second week, the activities were richer. We attended classes in traditional Chinese art in the first
three days, such as fan painting, paper cutting and Chinese calligraphy. It was so cool to drive out
the summer heat with a fan(扇子) painted by myself. Then the following day we went to eat traditional
food there. We also spent two days visiting some places of interest, learning about the local history
of the area. In the last day of our camp, we had a sharing session, during which we were asked to
describe the part we like best of our camp. It was a hard choice. For me, every activity was fun
—Chinese culture, the food and people all impressed me deeply. I hope to come again in the future.
